1 After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.	1 Après ces événements, la parole de Yahvé fut adressée à Abram dans une vision: “Ne crains pas, Abram, je suis ton bouclier, ta récompense sera très grande.”
2 And Abram said, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?	2 Abram répondit: “Seigneur Yahvé, que me donneras-tu? Je m’en vais sans enfants, et c’est Éliézer de Damas qui héritera de ma maison.”
3 And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.	3 Abram dit encore: “Comme tu ne m’as pas donné de descendance, c’est l’un de mes serviteurs qui sera mon héritier.”
4 And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.	4 Alors la parole de Yahvé lui fut adressée en ces termes: “Ce n’est pas lui qui héritera de toi; ton héritier sera un enfant à toi né de ton sang.”
5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.	5 Il le fit alors sortir et lui dit: “Regarde le ciel et compte les étoiles si tu peux les compter.” Et il ajouta: “Ainsi sera ta descendance.”
6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.	6 Abram crut en Yahvé, et pour cela, Yahvé le regarda comme juste.
7 And he said unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it.	7 Il lui dit: “Je suis Yahvé qui t’ai fait sortir d’Our en Kaldée, pour te donner ce pays et qu’il soit ton domaine.”
8 And he said, Lord GOD, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?	8 Abram répondit: “Seigneur Yahvé, comment saurai-je que je le posséderai?”
9 And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.	9 Il lui dit: “Prends-moi une génisse de trois ans, une chèvre de trois ans, un bélier de trois ans, une tourterelle et un pigeonneau.”
10 And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not.	10 Abram prit tous ces animaux et les partagea par le milieu, il plaça chaque moitié vis-à-vis de l’autre moitié, mais il ne partagea pas les oiseaux.
11 And when the fowls came down upon the carcases, Abram drove them away.	11 Les rapaces venaient s’abattre sur les cadavres, mais Abram les chassa.
12 And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him.	12 Comme le soleil se couchait, un profond sommeil tomba sur Abram, et il se trouva pris d’angoisse, plongé dans une grande obscurité.
13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;	13 Dieu dit alors à Abram: “Tu dois savoir que tes descendants vivront comme étrangers dans un pays qui n’est pas le leur; ils deviendront esclaves, on les opprimera durant 400 ans.
14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.	14 Mais alors je jugerai la nation de leurs maîtres, après quoi ils s’en iront comblés de richesses.
15 And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.	15 Quant à toi, tu iras en paix rejoindre tes pères et tu seras mis au tombeau après une heureuse vieillesse.
16 But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.	16 Ce n’est qu’à la quatrième génération que tes descendants reviendront ici, car jusqu’alors la faute des Amorites ne sera pas assez grande pour que je les chasse.”
17 And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.	17 Le soleil se coucha et la nuit se fit noire. Alors une fournaise et une torche embrasée passèrent entre les morceaux des victimes.
18 In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:	18 Ce jour-là Yahvé conclut une alliance avec Abram. Il lui dit: “Je donne à ta descendance ce pays, depuis le fleuve d’Égypte jusqu’au grand fleuve, le fleuve de l’Euphrate.
19 The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites,	19 Le pays des Kénites, des Kénizites, des Kadmonites,
20 And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims,	20 des Hittites, des Périsites, des Réphaïm,
21 And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.	21 des Amorites, des Cananéens, des Guirgachites et des Jébusites.
