1 Corinthians 8

1 Now concerning those things that are sacrificed to idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up; but charity edifieth.	1 Now in regard to meat sacrificed to idols: we realize that "all of us have knowledge"; knowledge inflates with pride, but love builds up.
2 And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he hath not yet known as he ought to know.	2 If anyone supposes he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know.
3 But if any any love God, the same is known by him.	3 But if one loves God, one is known by him.
4 But as for the meats that are sacrificed to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no God but one.	4 So about the eating of meat sacrificed to idols: we know that "there is no idol in the world," and that "there is no God but one."
5 For although there be that are called gods, either in heaven or on earth (for there be gods many, and lords many);	5 Indeed, even though there are so-called gods in heaven and on earth (there are, to be sure, many "gods" and many "lords"),
6 Yet to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we unto him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.	6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom all things are and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things are and through whom we exist.
7 But there is not knowledge in every one. For some until this present, with conscience of the idol: eat as a thing sacrificed to an idol, and their conscience, being weak, is defiled.	7 But not all have this knowledge. There are some who have been so used to idolatry up until now that, when they eat meat sacrificed to idols, their conscience, which is weak, is defiled.
8 But meat doth not commend us to God. For neither, if we eat, shall we have the more; nor, if we eat not, shall we have the less.	8 Now food will not bring us closer to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, nor are we better off if we do.
9 But take heed lest perhaps this your liberty become a stumblingblock to the weak.	9 But make sure that this liberty of yours in no way becomes a stumbling block to the weak.
10 For if a man see him that hath knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not his conscience, being weak, be emboldened to eat those things which are sacrificed to idols ?	10 If someone sees you, with your knowledge, reclining at table in the temple of an idol, may not his conscience too, weak as it is, be "built up" to eat the meat sacrificed to idols?
11 And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ hath died ?	11 Thus through your knowledge, the weak person is brought to destruction, the brother for whom Christ died.
12 Now when you sin thus against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ.	12 When you sin in this way against your brothers and wound their consciences, weak as they are, you are sinning against Christ.
13 Wherefore, if meat scandalize my brother, I will never eat flesh, lest I should scandalize my brother.	13 Therefore, if food causes my brother to sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I may not cause my brother to sin.
