Hast thou heard a word against thy neighbour? let it die within thee, trusting that it will not burst thee. | 1 He who does so grows no richer; he who wastes the little he has will be stripped bare. |
dummy verses inserted by amos | 2 Wine and women make the mind giddy, and the companion of harlots becomes reckless. |
dummy verses inserted by amos | 3 Rottenness and worms will possess him, for contumacious desire destroys its owner. |
dummy verses inserted by amos | 4 He who lightly trusts in them has no sense, and he who strays after them sins against his own life. |
dummy verses inserted by amos | 5 He who gloats over evil will meet with evil, and he who repeats an evil report has no sense. |
dummy verses inserted by amos | 6 Never repeat gossip, and you will not be reviled. |
dummy verses inserted by amos | 7 Tell nothing to friend or foe; if you have a fault, reveal it not, |
dummy verses inserted by amos | 8 For he who hears it will hold it against you, and in time become your enemy. |
dummy verses inserted by amos | 9 Let anything you hear die within you; be assured it will not make you burst. |
dummy verses inserted by amos | 10 When a fool hears something, he is in labor, like a woman giving birth to a child. |
At the hearing of a word the fool is in travail, as a woman groaning. in the bringing forth a child. | 11 Like an arrow lodged in a man's thigh is gossip in the breast of a fool. |
As an arrow that sticketh in a man's thigh: so is a word in the heart of a fool. | 12 Admonish your friend--he may not have done it; and if he did, that he may not do it again. |
Reprove a friend, lest he may not have understood, and say : f did it not: or if he did it, that he may do it no more. | 13 Admonish your neighbor--he may not have said it; and if he did, that he may not say it again. |
Reprove thy neighbour, for it may be he hath not said it: and if he hath said it, that he may not say it again. | 14 Admonish your friend--often it may be slander; every story you must not believe. |
Admonish thy friend: for there is often a fault committed. | 15 Then, too, a man can slip and not mean it; who has not sinned with his tongue? |
And believe not every word. There is one, that slippeth with the tongue, but not from his heart. | 16 Admonish your neighbor before you break with him; thus will you fulfill the law of the Most High. |
For who is there that hath not offended with his tongue? Admonish thy neighbour before thou threaten him. | 17 All wisdom is fear of the LORD; perfect wisdom is the fulfillment of the law. |
And give place to the fear of the most High: for the fear of God is all wisdom, and therein is to fear God, and the disposition of the law is in all wisdom. | 18 The knowledge of wickedness is not wisdom, nor is there prudence in the counsel of sinners. |
But the learning of wickedness is not wisdom: and the device of sinners is not prudence. | 19 There is a shrewdness that is detestable, while the simple man may be free from sin. |
There is a subtle wickedness, and the same is detestable: and there is a man that is foolish, wanting in wisdom. | 20 There are those with little understanding who fear God, and those of great intelligence who violate the law. |
Better is a man that hath less wisdom, and wanteth understanding, with the fear of God, than he that aboundeth in understanding, and transgresseth the law of the most High. | 21 There is a shrewdness keen but dishonest, which by duplicity wins a judgment. |
There is an exquisite subtilty, and the same is unjust. | 22 There is the wicked man who is bowed in grief, but is full of guile within; |
And there is one that uttereth an exact word telling the truth. There is one that humbleth himself wickedly, and his interior is full of deceit: | 23 He bows his head and feigns not to hear, but when not observed, he will take advantage of you: |
And there is one that submitteth himself exceedingly with a great lowliness: and there is one that casteth down his countenance, and maketh as if he did not see that which is unknown: | 24 Even though his lack of strength keeps him from sinning, when he finds the opportunity, he will do harm. |
And if he be hindered from sinning for want of power, if he shall find opportunity to do evil, he will do it. | 25 One can tell a man by his appearance; a wise man is known as such when first met. |
A man is known by his look, and a wise man, when thou meetest him, is known by his countenance. | 26 A man's attire, his hearty laughter and his gait, proclaim him for what he is. |
The attire of the body, and the laughter of the teeth, and the gait of the man, shew what he is. | |
There is a lying rebuke in the anger of an injurious man: and there is a judgment that is not allowed to be good: and there is one that holdeth his peace, he is wise. |
