1 But thy saints had a very great light, and they heard their voice indeed, but did not see their shape. And because they also did not suffer the same things, they glorified thee:	1 Cependant, Seigneur, une grande lumière éclairait Vos saints, et les Egyptiens entendaient leur voix, mais ne voyaient pas leur visage. Pour eux, ils Vous glorifiaient de ce qu'ils ne souffraient pas les mêmes peines;
2 And they that before had been wronged, gave thanks, because they were not hurt now: and asked this gift, that there might be a difference.	2 et après avoir été maltraités auparavant, ils Vous rendaient grâces maintenant qu'on avait cessé de leur nuire, et ils Vous priaient de continuer à faire cette différence entre eux et leurs ennemis.
3 Therefore they received a burning pillar of fire for a guide of the way which they knew not, and thou gavest them a harmless sun of a good entertainment.	3 C'est pourquoi ils eurent une colonne ardente de feu pour guide dans un chemin inconnu, et Vous leur avez donné un soleil qui, sans les incommoder, les accompagnait heureusement.
4 The others indeed were worthy to be deprived of light, and imprisoned in darkness, who kept thy children shut up, by whom the pure light of the law was to be given to the world.	4 Quant aux autres, ils méritaient bien d'être privés de lumière, et d'endurer une prison de ténèbres, eux qui tenaient enfermés Vos fils, par qui la lumière incorruptible de Votre loi commençait à être donnée au monde.
5 And whereas they thought to kill the babes of the just, one child being cast forth, and saved, to reprove them, thou tookest away a multitude of their children, and destroyedst them all together in a mighty water.	5 Ils avaient résolu de faire mourir les enfants des justes; l'un de ces enfants, qui avait été exposé, fut sauvé pour leur punition, et Vous avez enlevé un grand nombre de leurs enfants, et Vous les avez perdus eux-mêmes dans l'abîme des eaux.
6 For that night was known before by our fathers, that assuredly knowing what oaths they had trusted to, they might be of better courage.	6 Cette nuit avait été connue d'avance par nos pères, afin que, sachant parfaitement à quelles promesses ils avaient cru, ils en demeurassent plus assurés.
7 So thy people received the salvation of the just, and destruction of the unjust.	7 Ainsi Votre peuple contempla le salut des justes et la ruine des impies.
8 For as thou didst punish the adversaries: so thou didst also encourage and glorify us.	8 Car, de même que Vous avez châtié nos adversaires, ainsi Vous nous avez glorifiés en nous unissant à Vous.
9 For the just children of good men were offering sacrifice secretly, and they unanimously ordered a law of justice: that the just should receive both good and evil alike, singing now the praises of the fathers.	9 Cependant les justes enfants des bons offraient leur sacrifice en secret, et ils établissaient d'un commun accord cette loi de justice, qu'ils participeraient également aux biens et aux maux, et ils chantaient déjà les cantiques de louanges de leurs pères.
10 But on the other side there sounded an ill according cry of the enemies, and a lamentable mourning was heard for the children that were bewailed.	10 Mais en même temps retentissaient les voix confuses des ennemis, et l'on entendait des cris lamentables au sujet des enfants que l'on pleurait.
11 And the servant suffered the same punishment as the master, and a common man suffered in like manner as the king.	11 L'esclave était puni de la même peine que le maître, et l'homme du peuple souffrait les mêmes choses que le roi.
12 So all alike had innumerable dead, with one kind of death. Neither were the living sufficient to bury them; for in one moment the noblest offspring of them was destroyed.	12 Ainsi donc, tous avaient semblablement des morts sans nombre, frappés de la même mort. Les vivants ne suffisaient pas aux sépultures, parce qu'en un instant la partie la plus noble de la nation avait été exterminée.
13 For whereas they would not believe any thing before by reason of the enchantments, then first upon the destruction of the firstborn, they acknowledged the people to be of God.	13 Ils n'avaient cru à rien, à cause des magiciens; mais, aussitôt après l'extermination des premiers-nés, ils confessèrent que c'était le peuple de Dieu.
14 For while all things were in quiet silence, and the night was in the midst of her course,	14 Car tandis que tout reposait dans un paisible silence, et que la nuit, dans sa course, était au milieu de son chemin,
15 Thy almighty word leapt down from heaven from thy royal throne, as a fierce conqueror into the midst of the land of destruction.	15 Votre parole toute-puissante s'élança du Ciel, du trône royal, comme un guerrier impitoyable, sur cette terre destinée à la perdition;
16 With a sharp sword carrying thy unfeigned commandment, and he stood and filled all things with death, and standing on the earth reached even to heaven.	16 comme un glaive tranchant, elle portait Votre irrévocable arrêt, elle était là, remplissant tout de meurtre, et, se tenant sur la terre, elle atteignait jusqu'au Ciel.
17 Then suddenly visions of evil dreams troubled them, and fears unlooked for came upon them.	17 Ils furent aussitôt troublés par des songes et des visions horribles, et des frayeurs inattendues les saisirent.
18 And one thrown here, another there, half dead, shewed the cause of his death.	18 Renversés de côté et d'autre, à demi morts, ils déclaraient le motif pour lequel ils mouraient.
19 For the visions that troubled them foreshewed these things, lest they should perish and not know why they suffered these evils.	19 Car les visions qui les troublaient les en avaient avertis, de peur qu'ils ne périssent sans savoir la cause des maux qu'ils souffraient.
20 But the just also were afterwards touched by an assault of death, and there was a disturbance of the multitude in the wilderness: but thy wrath did not long continue.	20 L'épreuve de la mort frappa aussi alors les justes, et le peuple ressentit une vive secousse dans le désert; mais Votre colère ne dura pas longtemps.
21 For a blameless man made haste to pray for the people, bringing forth the shield of his ministry, prayer, and by incense making supplication, withstood the wrath, and put an end to the calamity, shewing that he was thy servant.	21 Car un homme irrépréhensible se hâta d'intercéder pour le peuple; il Vous opposa le bouclier de son ministère, et, Vous adressant sa prière et sa supplication avec l'encens, il résista à Votre colère et fit cesser le fléau, montrant qu'il était Votre serviteur.
22 And he overcame the disturbance, not by strength of body nor with force of arms, but with a word he subdued him that punished them, alleging the oaths and covenant made with the fathers.	22 Il ne domina pas le trouble par la force du corps, ni par la puissance des armes; mais il arrêta l'exterminatieur par sa parole, en alléguant les serments faits aux patriarches et l'alliance.
23 For when they were now fallen down dead by heaps one upon another, he stood between and stayed the assault, and cut off the way to the living.	23 Il y avait déjà des monceaux de morts, tombés les uns sur les autres, lorsqu'il s'interposa, arrêta la vengeance, et coupa la route qui conduisait aux survivants.
24 For in the priestly robe which he wore, was the whole world: and in the four rows of the stones the glory of the fathers was graven, and thy majesty was written upon the diadem of his head.	24 Car le monde entier était représenté par la longue robe qu'il portait; les noms glorieux des ancêtres étaient gravés sur les quatre rangs de pierres, et Votre magnificence était gravée sur le diadème de sa tête.
25 And to these the destroyer gave place, and was afraid of them: for the proof only of wrath was enough.	25 L'exterminateur céda devant ces choses, et il en fut effrayé; car l'expérience qu'on avait faite de Votre colère suffisait.
