My son, keep my words, and lay up my precepts with thee. Son,1 My son, keep my words and treasure up my commandments with you;
Keep my commandments, and thou shalt live: and my law as the apple of thy eye:2 keep my commandments and live, keep my teachings as the apple of your eye;
Bind it upon thy fingers, write it upon the tables of thy heart.3 bind them on your fingers, write them on the tablet of your heart.
Say to wisdom: Thou art my sister: and call prudence thy friend,4 Say to wisdom, "You are my sister," and call insight your intimate friend;
That she may keep thee from the woman that is not thine, and from the stranger who sweeteneth her words.5 to preserve you from the loose woman, from the adventuress with her smooth words.
For I look out of the window of my house through the lattice,6 For at the window of my house I have looked out through my lattice,
And I see little ones, I behold a foolish young man,7 and I have seen among the simple, I have perceived among the youths, a young man without sense,
Who passeth through the street by the corner, and goeth nigh the way of her house.8 passing along the street near her corner, taking the road to her house
In the dark, when it grows late, in the darkness and obscurity of the night,9 in the twilight, in the evening, at the time of night and darkness.
And behold a woman meeteth him in harlot's attire prepared to deceive souls; talkative and wandering,10 And lo, a woman meets him, dressed as a harlot, wily of heart.
Not bearing to be quiet, not able to abide still at home,11 She is loud and wayward, her feet do not stay at home;
Now abroad, now in the streets, now lying in wait near the corners.12 now in the street, now in the market, and at every corner she lies in wait.
And catching the young man, she kisseth him, and with an impudent face, flattereth, saying:13 She seizes him and kisses him, and with impudent face she says to him:
I vowed victims for prosperity, this day I have paid my vows.14 "I had to offer sacrifices, and today I have paid my vows;
Therefore I am come out to meet thee, desirous to see thee, and I have found thee.15 so now I have come out to meet you, to seek you eagerly, and I have found you.
I have woven my bed with cords, I have covered it with painted tapestry, brought from Egypt.16 I have decked my couch with coverings, colored spreads of Egyptian linen;
I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.17 I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.
Come, let us be inebriated with the breasts, and let us enjoy the desired embraces, till the day appear.18 Come, let us take our fill of love till morning; let us delight ourselves with love.
For my husband is not at home, he is gone a very long journey.19 For my husband is not at home; he has gone on a long journey;
He took with him a bag of money: he mill return home the day of the full moon.20 he took a bag of money with him; at full moon he will come home."
She entangled him with many words, and drew him away with the flattery of her lips.21 With much seductive speech she persuades him; with her smooth talk she compels him.
Immediately he followeth her as an ox led to be a victim, and as a lamb playing the wanton, and not knowing that he is drawn like a fool to bonds,22 All at once he follows her, as an ox goes to the slaughter, or as a stag is caught fast
Till the arrow pierce his liver: as if a bird should make haste to the snare, and knoweth not that his life is in danger.23 till an arrow pierces its entrails; as a bird rushes into a snare; he does not know that it will cost him his life.
Now therefore, my son, hear me, and attend to the words of my mouth.24 And now, O sons, listen to me, and be attentive to the words of my mouth.
Let not thy mind be drawn away in her ways: neither be thou deceived with her paths.25 Let not your heart turn aside to her ways, do not stray into her paths;
For she hath cast down many wounded, and the strongest have been slain by her.26 for many a victim has she laid low; yea, all her slain are a mighty host.
Her house is the way to hell, reaching even to the inner chambers of death.27 Her house is the way to Sheol, going down to the chambers of death.
