1 And it came to pass, when she had ceased to cry to the Lord, that she rose from the place wherein she lay prostrate before the Lord.	1 cf2Pendant que Tobie différait son départ à cause de ses noces, son père s'inquiétait et disait : D'où peut venir ce retard de mon fils, et qui peut le retenir là-bas ?
2 And she called her maid, and going down into her house she took off her haircloth, and put away the garments of her widowhood,	2 Ne serait-ce pas que Gabélus est mort, et qu'il ne se trouve personne pour lui rendre l'argent ?
3 And she washed her body, and anointed herself with the best ointment, and plaited the hair of her head, and put a bonnet upon her head, and clothed herself with the garments of her gladness, and put sandals on her feet, and took her bracelets, and lilies, and earlets, and rings, and adorned herself with all her ornaments.	3 Il commença donc à s'attrister vivement, et Anne, sa femme, avec lui ; et ils se mirent ensemble à pleurer de ce que leur fils n'était pas revenu auprès d'eux au jour marqué.
4 And the Lord also gave her more beauty: because all this dressing up did not proceed from sensuality, lent from virtue: and therefore the Lord increased this her beauty, so that she appeared to all men's eyes incomparably lovely.	4 Mais sa mère surtout versait des larmes inconsolables, et elle disait : Hélas ! hélas ! mon fils, pourquoi t'avons-nous envoyé si loin, toi la lumière de nos yeux, le bâton de notre vieillesse, la consolation de notre vie et l'espérance de notre postérité ?
5 And she gave to her maid a bottle of wine to carry, and a vessel of oil, and parched corn, and dry figs, and bread and cheese, and went out.	5 Nous ne devions pas t'éloigner de nous, puisque toi seul nous tenais lieu de toutes choses.
6 And when they came to the gate of the city, they found Ozias, and the ancients of the city waiting.	6 Tobie lui disait : Tais-toi, et ne te trouble pas ; notre fils se porte bien ; cet homme avec qui nous l'avons envoyé est très fidèle.
7 And when they saw her they were astonished, and admired her beauty exceedingly.	7 Mais rien ne pouvait la consoler ; et, sortant tous les jours de sa maison, elle regardait de tous côtés, et allait dans tous les chemins par lesquels elle espérait qu'il pourrait revenir pour tâcher de le découvrir de loin quand il reviendrait.
8 But they asked her no question, only they let her pass, saying: The God of our fathers give thee grace, and may he strengthen all the counsel of thy heart with his power, that Jerusalem may glory in thee, and thy name may be in the number of the holy and just.	8 Cependant Raguël disait à son gendre : Demeure ici, et j'enverrai à Tobie ton père des nouvelles de ta santé.
9 And they that were there said, all with one voice: So be it, so be it.	9 Tobie lui répondit : Je sais (parfaitement) que mon père et ma mère comptent maintenant les jours, et qu'ils sont accablés de chagrin.
10 But Judith praying to the Lord, passed through the gates, she and her maid.	10 Et comme Raguël priait Tobie avec de grandes instances, et que celui-ci refusait de consentir, il lui remit Sara et la moitié de tout ce qu'il possédait en serviteurs, en servantes, en troupeaux, en chameaux, en vaches, et une grande quantité d'argent, et il le laissa partir plein de santé et de joie,
11 And it came to pass, when she went down the hill, about break of day, that the watchmen of the Assyrians met her and stopped her, saying: Whence comest thou? or whither goest thou?	11 en lui disant : Que le saint ange du Seigneur soit en votre chemin ; qu'il vous conduise sains et saufs, et puissiez-vous trouver votre père et votre mère en bon état, et que mes yeux voient vos enfants avant que je meure.
12 And she answered: I am a daughter of the Hebrews, and I am fled from them, because I knew they would be made a prey to you, because they despised you, and would not of their own accord yield themselves, that they might find mercy in your sight.	12 Et les parents, prenant leur fille, la baisèrent et la laissèrent aller,
13 For this reason I thought with myself, saying: I will go to the presence of the prince Holofernes, that I may tell him their secrets, and shew him by what way he may take them, without the loss of one man of his army.	13 l'avertissant d'honorer son beau-père et sa belle-mère, d'aimer son mari, de régler sa famille, de gouverner sa maison, (et) de se conserver elle-même irrépréhensible.
14 And when the men had heard her words, they beheld her face, and their eyes were amazed, for they wondered exceedingly at her beauty.	14 Et lorsque ces hommes eurent entendu ses paroles, ils contemplèrent son visage, et la stupeur était dans leurs yeux, tant ils admiraient sa beauté.
15 And they said to her: Thou hast saved thy life by taking this resolution, to come down to our lord.	15 Et ils lui dirent : Vous avez sauvé votre vie en prenant cette résolution de descendre auprès de notre maître.
16 And be assured of this, that when thou shalt stand before him, he will treat thee well, and thou wilt be most acceptable to his heart. And they brought her to the tent of Holofernes, telling him of her.	16 Et sachez que, lorsque vous paraîtrez devant lui, il vous traitera bien, et que vous serez très agréable à son coeur. Ils la conduisirent donc à la tente d'Holoferne, et la lui annoncèrent.
17 And when she was come into his presence, forthwith Holofernes was caught by his eyes.	17 Et lorsqu'elle fut entrée devant Holoferne, il fut aussitôt séduit par ses regards.
18 And his officers said to him: Who can despise the people of the Hebrews who have such beautiful women, that we should not think it worth our while for their sakes to fight against them?	18 Et ses officiers lui dirent : Qui pourrait mépriser le peuple des Hébreux, qui ont des femmes si belles, qu'elles méritent bien que nous combattions contre eux pour elles?
19 And Judith seeing Holofernes sitting under a canopy, which was woven of purple and gold, with emeralds and precious stones:	19 Or Judith, voyant Holoferne assis sous son pavillon, qui était de pourpre et d'or, et d'émeraudes et de pierres précieuses,
20 After she had looked on his face bowed down to him, prostrating herself to the ground. And the servants of Holofernes lifted her up, by the command of their master.	20 jeta les yeux sur son visage, et l'adora en se prosternant jusqu'à terre. Et les serviteurs d'Holoferne la relevèrent par ordre de leur maître.
