Siracide 11

BIBBIA TINTORI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 La sapienza dell'umile lo innalzerà e lo farà sedere tra i grandi.	1 Wisdom enables the poor to stand erect, and gives to the poor a place with the great.
2 Non lodare un uomo per la sua bellezza, e non disprezzare una persona per il suo aspetto.	2 Do not praise anyone for good looks, nor dislike anyone for mere appearance.
3 Piccola cosa tra i volatili è l'ape, eppure il suo frutto ha il primato della dolcezza.	3 Smal among winged creatures is the bee but her produce is the sweetest of the sweet.
4 Non ti gloriar mai del tuo vestito, non t'insuperbire quando sarai onorato; perchè soltanto le opere dell'Altissimo son maravigliose, le opere di lui son gloriose, nascoste, invisibili.	4 Do not grow proud when people honour you; for the works of the Lord are wonderful but hidden fromhuman beings.
5 Sederono sul trono molti tiranni, e portò il diadema colui al quale nessuno pensava.	5 Many monarchs have been made to sit on the ground, and the person nobody thought of has worn thecrown.
6 Molti potenti sono stati profondamente umiliati, e chi era nella gloria fu dato in altrui potere.	6 Many influential people have been utterly disgraced, and prominent people have fal en into the power ofothers.
7 Non biasimare avanti d'esserti informato, quando ti sarai informato riprenderai con giustizia.	7 Do not find fault before making thorough enquiry; first reflect, then give a reprimand.
8 Non rispondere prima d'aver ascoltato, e non interrompere l'altrui discorso.	8 Listen before you answer, and do not interrupt a speech before it is finished.
9 Non contendere per cosa che non ti molesta, e non ti mettere a giudicar coi peccatori.	9 Do not wrangle about something that does not concern you, do not interfere in the quarrels of sinners.
10 Figlio, non t'impicciare in molte cose: se diverrai ricco, non sarai immune da colpa; se andrai dietro (a molte) non ne porterai in fondo (una), ed anche fuggendo, non ti trarrai d'impaccio.	10 My child, do not take on a great amount of business; if you multiply your interests, you are bound to suffer for it; hurry as fast as you can, yet you wil never arrive, nor wil you escape by running away.
11 C'è chi fatica, s'affretta e patisce, e, essendo empio, tanto meno arricchisce.	11 Some people work very hard at top speed, only to find themselves fal ing further behind.
12 C'è invece un disgraziato bisognoso d'aiuto, privo d'ogni forza e ricco di miseria;	12 Or there is the slow kind of person, needing help, poor in possessions and rich in poverty; and theLord turns a favourable eye on him, lifts him out of his wretched condition,
13 ma l'occhio di Dio lo guarda benignamente, lo solleva dalla sua umile condizione, gli fa alzare la testa, e molti ne restano ammirati e glorificano Dio.	13 and enables him to hold his head high, thus causing general astonishment.
14 I beni e i mali, la vita e la morte, la povertà e la ricchezza vengono da Dio.	14 Good and bad, life and death, poverty and wealth, al come from the Lord.
15 La sapienza, la disciplina e la scienza della legge son da Dio, son da lui l'amore e le vie del bene.	15
16 L'errore e le tenebre sono ingenite nei peccatori, e chi esulta nel male invecchia nella malizia.	16
17 Il dono di Dio rimane ai giusti, e il suo progresso avrà dei successi in eterno.	17 To the devout the Lord's gift remains constant, and his favour will be there to lead them for ever.
18 C'è chi arricchisce a forza di risparmi, ed ecco la parte che gli tocca in ricompensa:	18 Others grow rich by pinching and scraping, and here is the reward they receive for it:
19 che può dire: « Ho trovato riposo, ed ora mi godrò da solo i miei beni »	19 although they say, 'Now I can sit back and enjoy the benefit of what I have got,' they do not know howlong this wil last; they will have to leave their goods to others and die.
20 e non sa quanto tempo debba passare avanti che s'avvicini la morte, quando morrà lasciando tutto agli altri.	20 Stick to your job, work hard at it and grow old at your work.
21 Stai al tuo patto, di esso ragiona, e invecchia nell'adempimento di quanto t'è comandato.	21 Do not admire the achievements of sinners, trust the Lord and mind your own business; since it is atrifle in the eyes of the Lord, in a moment, suddenly to make the poor rich.
22 Non rimanere stupito dell'agire dei peccatori, ma confida in Dio e rimani al tuo posto;	22 The blessing of the Lord is the reward of the devout, in a moment God brings his blessing to flower.
23 perché è facile davanti a Dio arricchire in un momento il povero.	23 Do not say, 'What are my needs, how much shal I have in the future?'
24 La benedizione di Dio s'affretta a ricompensare il giusto, e in breve ora fa fruttificare i suoi progressi.	24 And do not say, 'I am self-sufficient, what disaster can affect me now?'
25 Non dire: « Di che ho bisogno? E quali beni potrò avere da qui in avanti? »	25 In prosperous times, disasters are forgotten and in times of disaster, no one remembers prosperity.
26 Non dire: « Io basto a me stesso; e qual disgrazia ormai mi potrà, accadere? »	26 Yet it is a trifle for the Lord on the day someone dies to repay him as his conduct deserves.
27 Nel giorno della felicità non ti dimenticare della sventura, e nel giorno della sventura non ti dimenticare della felicità.	27 A moment's adversity, and pleasures are forgotten; in a person's last hour his deeds wil standrevealed.
28 E' cosa facile a Dio, nel giorno della morte, rendere a ciascuno secondo la sua condotta.	28 Cal no one fortunate before his death; it is by his end that someone wil be known.
29 Il male d'un'ora fa dimenticare i grandi piaceri, e alla fine dell'uomo le sue opere saranno svelate.	29 Do not bring everyone home with you, for many are the traps of the crafty.
30 Non lodar nessuno avanti la sua morte, perchè l'uomo si conosce dai suoi figlioli.	30 Like a captive partridge in a cage, so is the heart of the proud: like a spy he watches for your downfal ,
31 Non menare in casa tua ogni sorta di persone, perchè son molte le insidie dell'ingannatore.	31 ever on the look-out, turning good into bad and finding fault with what is praiseworthy.
32 Come lo stomaco guasto rutta fetidi odori, come la pernice è attirata nella gabbia e il daino nel laccio, così fa il cuore del superbo, e come chi spia per vedere la caduta del prossimo.	32 A hearthful of glowing coals starts from a single spark, and the sinner lurks for the chance to spilblood.
33 Infatti, convertendo il bene in male, tende insidie, e alle doti migliori apporrà delle macchie.	33 Beware of a scoundrel and his evil contrivances, in case he puts a smear on you for ever.
34 Da una sola scintilla divamperà l'incendio, da un solo ingannatore saran moltiplicate le stragi; e l'uomo perverso attenta alla vita.	34 Give a home to a stranger and he wil start trouble and estrange you from your own family.
35 Guardati dal corruttore, che ordisce guai, affinchè non abbia a tirarti addosso eterno scherno.
36 Metti in casa uno straniero, ed egli ti metterà sottosopra e in tempesta, e ti alienerà dai tuoi.
