1 Poi Eliu, continuando a parlare, disse anche questo:	1 Then Elihu continued and said:
2 « O sapienti, ascoltate le mie parole, o prudenti, statemi a sentire:	2 Hear, O wise men, my discourse, and you that have knowledge, hear me!
3 giacchè l'orecchio giudica le parole come il palato discerne i cibi.	3 For the ear tests words, as the taste does food.
4 Formiamoci un giudizio, e vediamo tra noi quale sia il meglio.	4 Let us discern for ourselves what is right; let us learn between us what is good.
5 Giobbe ha detto: Io son giusto: e Dio non mi rende giustizia;	5 For Job has said, "I am innocent, but God has taken what is my due.
6 nel giudizio fatto contro di me ci sono degli sbagli; la mia piaga è atroce senza che io abbia peccato:	6 Notwithstanding my right I am set at nought; in my wound the arrow rankles, sinless though I am."
7 chi è mai come Giobbe che beve l'insulto come l'acqua,	7 What man is like Job? He drinks in blasphemies like water,
8 e cammina con quei che commettono l'iniquità, e s'imbranca cogli scelerati?	8 Keeps company with evildoers and goes along with wicked men,
9 Infatti ha detto: L'uomo non piacerà a Dio, quand'anche corresse assieme con lui.	9 When he says, "It profits a man nought that he is pleasing to God."
10 Or dunque ascoltatemi, o uomini assennati. Lungi da Dio l'empietà, e dall'onnipotente l'ingiustizia.	10 Therefore, men of understanding, hearken to me: far be it from God to do wickedness; far from the Almighty to do wrong!
11 Egli infatti renderà all'uomo secondo le sue opere, e retribuirà a ciascuno secondo la sua condotta.	11 Rather, he requites men for their conduct, and brings home to a man his way of life.
12 Di certo Dio non condanna senza ragione, e l'Onnipotente non perverte la giustizia.	12 Surely, God cannot act wickedly, the Almighty cannot violate justice.
13 Qual altro ha Egli costituito sopra la terra? A chi ha dato il governo dell'universo da lui creato?	13 Who gave him government over the earth, or who else set all the land in its place?
14 Se restringesse in sè il suo pensiero, se ritirasse a sè lo spirito e il fiato,	14 If he were to take back his spirit to himself, withdraw to himself his breath,
15 sogni carne verrebbe meno, e l'uomo ritornerebbe in cenere.	15 All flesh would perish together, and man would return to the dust.
16 Se tu sei intelligente, ascolta quanto si dice, e sta' attento al suono delle mie parole.	16 Now, do you, O Job, hear this! Hearken to the words I speak!
17 Può forse essere sanato colui che non ama la giustizia? E come fai a condannare a questa maniera colui che è il Giusto?	17 Can an enemy of justice indeed be in control, or will you condemn the supreme Just One,
18 Colui che dice al re: Apostata, e chiama i grandi scelerati;	18 Who says to a king, "You are worthless!" and to nobles, "You are wicked!"
19 colui che non guarda in faccia ai potenti, e non fa conto del tiranno quando è in litigio col povero, perché tutti sono opera delle sue mani.	19 Who neither favors the person of princes, nor respects the rich more than the poor? For they are all the work of his hands;
20 Essi moriranno all'improvviso, nel mezzo della notte, ne saran turbati i popoli, ed essi passeranno, e il violento sarà portato via senza la mano (dell'uomo).	20 in a moment they die, even at midnight. He brings on nobles, and takes them away, removing the powerful without lifting a hand;
21 Infatti Dio tien d'occhio la condotta dei mortali e considera tutti i loro passi.	21 For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he beholds all his steps.
22 Non vi son tenebre, nè ombra di morte ove possano nascondersi quelli che operano l'iniquità.	22 There is no darkness so dense that evildoers can hide in it.
23 Non è più in potere dell'uomo di comparire al giudizio di Dio.	23 For he forewarns no man of his time to come before God in judgment.
24 Egli ne stritolerà una moltitudine innumerevole, e ne stabilirà altri al loro posto.	24 Without a trial he breaks the mighty, and sets others in their stead,
25 Conoscendo le loro opere, li travolge nella notte e li fa stritolare;	25 Therefore he discerns their works; he turns at night and crushes them.
26 li colpisce come empi in presenza di tutti.
27 Essi come per partito preso si allontanarono da lui e non vollero comprendere nessuna delle sue vie,	27 Because they turned away from him and heeded none of his ways,
28 in modo da far giungere a lui il gemito del povero, da fargli sentire i lamenti degl'infelici.	28 But caused the cries of the poor to reach him, so that he heard the plea of the afflicted.
29 Se Egli dà pace, chi potrà condannare? Se Egli nasconde il suo volto, chi potrà contemplarlo, sia delle nazioni che di tutti gli uomini?	29 If he remains tranquil, who then can condemn? If he hides his face, who then can behold him?
30 E gli fa regnare l'ipocrita a motivo dei peccati del popolo.
31 Giacchè io ho parlato davanti a Dio, non t'impedirò di parlare.	31 When anyone says to God, "I was misguided; I will offend no more.
32 Se ho sbagliato, mostramelo, e se ho parlato male non dirò altro.	32 Teach me wherein I have sinned; if I have done wrong, I will do so no more,"
33 Forse che Dio non ti domanderà conto dell'iniquità, perchè ti è dispiaciuto? Tu e non io hai cominciato a parlare, or se hai qualche cosa di meglio, parla.	33 Would you then say that God must punish, since you reject what he is doing? It is you who must choose, not I; speak, therefore, what you know.
34 Parlino con me gli uomini intelligenti, e l'uomo saggio mi ascolti.	34 Men of understanding will say to me, every wise man who hears my views:
35 Ma Giobbe ha parlato stoltamente, e le sue parole non suonan buona dottrina.	35 "Job speaks without intelligence, and his words are without sense."
36 Padremio, sia provato Giobbe sino alla fine, non risparmiare l'uomo iniquo;	36 Let Job be tried to the limit, since his answers are those of the impious;
37 perchè egli aggiunge ai suoi peccati la bestemmia. Frattanto sia fra noi messo alle strette, e poi coi suoi discorsi chiami in giudizio Dio ».	37 For he is adding rebellion to his sin by brushing off our arguments and addressing many words to God.
