BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAIN
1 - Le veglie [per brama] di ricchezza coniuman le carni, e la preoccupazione di essa allontana il sonno.	1 Watching for wealth consumes the flesh, and thinking about it takes away sleep.
2 La cura vigilante toglie il dormire, e come una grave malattia allontana il sonno.	2 Anticipation in thought distracts the mind, and a grievous infirmity makes the soul sober.
3 Fatica il ricco nell'accumulare averi, e nel suo riposo si sazia de' suoi beni.	3 The rich man has labored in gathering wealth, and in his rest, he will be filled with his goods.
4 Fatica il povero per mancanza di sostentamento, e quando smette, è nella miseria.	4 The poor man has labored in his lowly way, and in the end, he may still be in need.
5 Chi ama l'oro non sarà giusto, e chi corre dietro alla corruzione, ne avrà a sazietà.	5 Whoever loves gold will not be justified. And whoever pursues consumption will be consumed by it.
6 Molti furon mandati a precipizio [a caglon] dell'oro, e nel suo splendore fu la loro rovina.	6 Many have been caused to fall because of gold, and it became their ruin by its beauty.
7 Legno d'inciampo è l'oro per quelli che ad esso sacrificano, guai a coloro che gli van dietro!, e ogni insensato perirà per esso.	7 Gold is a stumbling block to those who sacrifice for it. Woe to those who pursue it eagerly, for all the imprudent will perish by it.
8 Beato il ricco ch'è trovato senza, macchia, e che dietro all'oro non è andato, nè ha sperato nel danaro e ne' tesori.	8 Blessed is the rich man who is found to be without blemish. And blessed is he who has not gone after gold, nor placed his hope in money or treasures.
9 Chi è costui, e lo proclameremo beato? Perchè ha fatto meraviglie in vita sua!	9 Who is he? For we should praise him. For he has done wonderful things in his life.
10 Egli è stato provato con Poro e trovato integro; avrà gloria imperitura; egli poteva prevaricare e non ha prevaricato, fare il male e non l'ha fatto.	10 He has been tested by it, and has become perfect; he will have eternal glory. He was able to transgress, but he has not transgressed. He was able to do evil, but he has not done evil.
11 Perciò son consolidati i suoi beni nel Signore, e le sue limosine racconterà tutta l'adunanza dei santi.	11 Therefore, his good things are established in the Lord, and the entire Church of the saints will proclaim his almsgiving.
12 Siedi a lauta mensa? non spalancarci su la tua gola per il primo.	12 Are you seated at a great table? You should not open your mouth over it first.
13 Non dire: « Molta è la roba che c'è sopra! ».	13 You should not speak in this way: “There are many things that are upon it.”
14 Ricordati che triste [cosa] è l'occhio invidioso:	14 Remember that a wicked eye is evil.
15 c'è nulla di più invidioso dell'occhio tra le cose create? Perciò lagrima da tutta la sua faccia! Dov'esso guarda,	15 What has been made more wicked than the eye? Therefore, when it sees, it will shed tears over the entire face.
16 non stender la tua mano per primo, perchè, contaminato dall'invidia, tu non abbia ad arrossire:	16 You should not extend your hand first, for then, having been corrupted by envy, you would be ashamed.
17 non far ressa durante il convito.	17 You should not press forward at a feast.
18 Giudica i desiderii del tuo vicino dai tuoi stessi,[e in tutto quel che fai, usa riflessione].	18 Understand which things are your neighbor’s and not your own.
19 Serviti da uomo per bene di quelle cose che ti son messe innanzi, affinchè, mangiando a crepa pancia, tu non ti renda odioso.	19 Make use of the things that are set before you, just as a frugal man would. Otherwise, if you eat much, you will be hated.
20 Cessa per il primo, per motivo d'educazione, e non esser insaziabile per non offendere.	20 Cease eating first, for the sake of discipline. And do not eat to excess, lest you offend.
21 E se siedi in mezzo a molti, non stender la mano prima di loro, nè per primo chiedi da bere.	21 And if you sit in the midst of many, you should not extend your hand before they do, and you should not be the first to ask for a drink.
22 Il poco vino è sufficiente all'uomo educato e nel dormire non ne sarai travagliato, nè sentirai malessere.	22 How sufficient is a little wine for a well-taught man! For in sleep, you will not labor because of it, and you will not feel pain.
23 L''nsonnia, il vomito e i dolori son per l'uomo insaziabile.	23 Worry, and disease, and torment are with an intemperate man.
24 Il sonno salubre è per l'uomo parco: dorme sino al mattino e l'anima sua s'allieterà con lui.	24 A healthy sleep is with a temperate man. He will sleep until morning, and his soul will be delighted with him.
25 E se sarai stato costretto a mangiar troppo, levati di mezzo, vomita e n'avrai sollievo, e non procaccerai al tuo corpo una malattia.	25 And if you have been coaxed into eating too much, rise up, go outside, and vomit. And it will refresh you, and you will not bring sickness upon your body.
26 Ascoltami, o figliuolo, e non mi disprezzare, e da ultimo troverai [ch'eran vere] le mie parole.	26 Listen to me, son, for you should not spurn me. And in the very end, you will discover my words.
27 in tutto quel che fai sii svelto [e diligente], e nessuna malattia t'incoglierà.	27 In all your works, be prompt, and then no infirmity will befall you.
28 Chi è splendido nell'imbandire, lo lodan le labbra di molti e la testimonianza alla sua generosità è verace.	28 The lips of many will bless the splendid in bread. For the testimony of his truthfulness is faithful.
29 Contro chi è spilorcio a mensa, mormora la città, e la testimonianza alla sua spilorceria è verace.	29 The city will murmur against the wicked in bread. For the testimony against his wickedness is true.
30 Gli amanti del vino non provocare, che molti ha rovinato il vino.	30 Do not choose to provoke those who love wine. For wine has destroyed many.
31 Il fuoco prova l'acciaio temprato, così il vino, bevuto fino all'ubriachezza, mette a nudo i cuori dei superbi.	31 Fire tests the hardness of iron; similarly, drinking wine to inebriation will rebuke the hearts of the arrogant.
32 Buona vita per gli uomini è il vino con sobrietà: se lo bevi con moderazione sarai sobrio.	32 Drinking wine in sobriety gives a contented life to men. If you drink it in moderation, you will be sober.
33 Qual vita fa colui che manca di vino?	33 What is life to him who is diminished by wine?
34 Cos'è che toglie la vita? La morte!	34 What can cheat him of his life? Death.
35 Il vino fu creato per la giocondità [dell'uomo] e non per l'ubriachezza, da principio.	35 From the beginning, wine was created for cheerfulness, but not for inebriation.
36 Esultanza dell'anima e [letizia] del cuore è il vino bevuto [a tempo e] moderatamente:	36 Wine taken in moderation lifts up the mind and the heart.
37 salute dell'anima e del corpo è il bere sobrio.	37 Sober drinking is healthful to mind and body.
38 Il vino bevuto con eccesso causa l'irritazione, lo sdegno e molte rovine:	38 Wine taken in excess stirs up conflict and anger, and brings many to ruin.
39 amarezza dell'anima è il vino bevuto con eccesso.	39 Wine taken in excess is bitter to the soul.
40 L'eccitazione dell'ebbrezza [provoca] l'offesa dell'insensato: scema le forze e produce ferite.	40 The effects of inebriation are a stumbling block to the imprudent, diminishing strength and causing wounds.
41 In un simposio di vino non rimproverare il vicino, e non lo disprezzare nella sua allegria.	41 You should not argue with your neighbor during a banquet of wine. And you should not spurn him in his cheerfulness.
42 parole d'ingiuria non gli dire, e non l'angustiare col richiedergli [quel che ti deve].	42 You should not speak words of reproach to him. And you should not press him with repeated requests.
