1 Thessalonians 5

1 But concerning dates and times, brothers, you do not need us to write to you.	1 Περὶ δὲ τῶν χρόνων καὶ τῶν καιρῶν, ἀδελφοί, οὐ χρείαν ἔχετε ὑμῖν γράφεσθαι,
2 For you yourselves thoroughly understand that the day of the Lord shall arrive much like a thief in the night.	2 αὐτοὶ γὰρ ἀκριβῶς οἴδατε ὅτι ἡμέρα κυρίου ὡς κλέπτης ἐν νυκτὶ οὕτως ἔρχεται.
3 For when they will say, “Peace and security!” then destruction will suddenly overwhelm them, like the labor pains of a woman with child, and they will not escape.	3 ὅταν λέγωσιν· εἰρήνη καὶ ἀσφάλεια, τότε αἰφνίδιος αὐτοῖς ἐφίσταται ὄλεθρος ὥσπερ ἡ ὠδὶν τῇ ἐν γαστρὶ ἐχούσῃ, καὶ οὐ μὴ ἐκφύγωσιν.
4 But you, brothers, are not in darkness, so that you would be overtaken by that day as by a thief.	4 ὑμεῖς δέ, ἀδελφοί, οὐκ ἐστὲ ἐν σκότει, ἵνα ἡ ἡμέρα ὑμᾶς ὡς κλέπτης καταλάβῃ·
5 For all of you are sons of light and sons of daytime; we are not of nighttime, nor of darkness.	5 πάντες γὰρ ὑμεῖς υἱοὶ φωτός ἐστε καὶ υἱοὶ ἡμέρας. Οὐκ ἐσμὲν νυκτὸς οὐδὲ σκότους·
6 Therefore, let us not sleep, as the rest do. Instead, we should be vigilant and sober.	6 ἄρα οὖν μὴ καθεύδωμεν ὡς οἱ λοιποὶ ἀλλὰ γρηγορῶμεν καὶ νήφωμεν.
7 For those who sleep, sleep in the night; and those who are inebriated, are inebriated in the night.	7 Οἱ γὰρ καθεύδοντες νυκτὸς καθεύδουσιν καὶ οἱ μεθυσκόμενοι νυκτὸς μεθύουσιν·
8 But we, who are of the daylight, should be sober, being clothed with the breastplate of faith and of charity and having, as a helmet, the hope of salvation.	8 ἡμεῖς δὲ ἡμέρας ὄντες νήφωμεν ἐνδυσάμενοι θώρακα πίστεως καὶ ἀγάπης καὶ περικεφαλαίαν ἐλπίδα σωτηρίας·
9 For God has not appointed us for wrath, but for the acquisition of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,	9 ὅτι οὐκ ἔθετο ἡμᾶς ὁ θεὸς εἰς ὀργὴν ἀλλ’ εἰς περιποίησιν σωτηρίας διὰ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ
10 who died for us, so that, whether we watch, or whether we sleep, we may live in union with him.	10 τοῦ ἀποθανόντος ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν, ἵνα εἴτε γρηγορῶμεν εἴτε καθεύδωμεν ἅμα σὺν αὐτῷ ζήσωμεν.
11 Because of this, console one another and build up one another, just as you are doing.	11 Διὸ παρακαλεῖτε ἀλλήλους καὶ οἰκοδομεῖτε εἷς τὸν ἕνα, καθὼς καὶ ποιεῖτε.
12 And we ask you, brothers, to recognize those who labor among you, and who preside over you in the Lord, and who admonish you,	12 Ἐρωτῶμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς, ἀδελφοί, εἰδέναι τοὺς κοπιῶντας ἐν ὑμῖν καὶ προϊσταμένους ὑμῶν ἐν κυρίῳ καὶ νουθετοῦντας ὑμᾶς
13 so that you may consider them with an abundance of charity, for the sake of their work. Be at peace with them.	13 καὶ ἡγεῖσθαι αὐτοὺς ὑπερεκπερισσοῦ ἐν ἀγάπῃ διὰ τὸ ἔργον αὐτῶν. εἰρηνεύετε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς.
14 And we ask you, brothers: correct the disruptive, console the weak-minded, support the sick, be patient with everyone.	14 Παρακαλοῦμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς, ἀδελφοί, νουθετεῖτε τοὺς ἀτάκτους, παραμυθεῖσθε τοὺς ὀλιγοψύχους, ἀντέχεσθε τῶν ἀσθενῶν, μακροθυμεῖτε πρὸς πάντας.
15 See to it that no one repays evil for evil to anyone. Instead, always pursue whatever is good, with one another and with all.	15 ὁρᾶτε μή τις κακὸν ἀντὶ κακοῦ τινι ἀποδῷ, ἀλλὰ πάντοτε τὸ ἀγαθὸν διώκετε [καὶ] εἰς ἀλλήλους καὶ εἰς πάντας.
16 Rejoice always.	16 Πάντοτε χαίρετε,
17 Pray without ceasing.	17 ἀδιαλείπτως προσεύχεσθε,
18 Give thanks in everything. For this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for all of you.	18 ἐν παντὶ εὐχαριστεῖτε· τοῦτο γὰρ θέλημα θεοῦ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ εἰς ὑμᾶς.
19 Do not choose to extinguish the Spirit.	19 τὸ πνεῦμα μὴ σβέννυτε,
20 Do not spurn prophecies.	20 προφητείας μὴ ἐξουθενεῖτε,
21 But test all things. Hold on to whatever is good.	21 πάντα δὲ δοκιμάζετε, τὸ καλὸν κατέχετε,
22 Abstain from every kind of evil.	22 ἀπὸ παντὸς εἴδους πονηροῦ ἀπέχεσθε.
23 And may the God of peace himself sanctify you through all things, so that your whole spirit and soul and body may be preserved without blame unto the return of our Lord Jesus Christ.	23 Αὐτὸς δὲ ὁ θεὸς τῆς εἰρήνης ἁγιάσαι ὑμᾶς ὁλοτελεῖς, καὶ ὁλόκληρον ὑμῶν τὸ πνεῦμα καὶ ἡ ψυχὴ καὶ τὸ σῶμα ἀμέμπτως ἐν τῇ παρουσίᾳ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τηρηθείη.
24 He who has called you is faithful. He shall act even now.	24 πιστὸς ὁ καλῶν ὑμᾶς, ὃς καὶ ποιήσει.
25 Brothers, pray for us.	25 Ἀδελφοί, προσεύχεσθε [καὶ] περὶ ἡμῶν.
26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.	26 Ἀσπάσασθε τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς πάντας ἐν φιλήματι ἁγίῳ.
27 I bind you, through the Lord, that this epistle is to be read to all the holy brothers.	27 Ἐνορκίζω ὑμᾶς τὸν κύριον ἀναγνωσθῆναι τὴν ἐπιστολὴν πᾶσιν τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς.
28 May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.	28 Ἡ χάρις τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ μεθ’ ὑμῶν.
