1 “ ‘And now, O Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, the soul in anguish and the troubled spirit cry out to you.	1 Seigneur tout-puissant, Dieu d'Israël, c'est une âme angoissée, un esprit ébranlé, qui te crie:
2 Listen, O Lord, and be merciful, for you are a merciful God, and so be merciful to us, for we have sinned before you.	2 Ecoute, Seigneur, aie pitié, car nous avons péché devant toi.
3 For you are enthroned in eternity, but we will pass away in time.	3 Toi, tu trônes éternellement; nous autres, nous périssons pour toujours.
4 O Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, listen now to the prayer of the dead of Israel and of their sons, who have sinned before you and have not listened to the voice of the Lord their God, and have joined themselves to evil.	4 Seigneur tout-puissant, Dieu d'Israël, écoute donc la supplication des morts d'Israël, des fils de ceuxqui ont péché contre toi, qui n'ont pas écouté la voix du Seigneur leur Dieu de sorte que les malheurs se sontattachés à nous.
5 Remember not the iniquities of our fathers, but remember your hand and your name at this time.	5 Ne te souviens pas des fautes de nos pères, mais en cette heure souviens-toi de ta main et de tonNom.
6 For you are the Lord our God, and we will praise you, O Lord.	6 Oui, tu es le Seigneur notre Dieu, et nous voulons te louer, Seigneur.
7 And for this reason, you have imparted your fear into our hearts, and also, so that we may call upon your name and may praise you in our captivity, for we are converted from the iniquity of our fathers, who sinned before you.	7 Car tu as mis en nos coeurs ta crainte pour que nous invoquions ton Nom. Nous voulons te louer ennotre exil, puisque nous avons écarté de notre coeur toute la méchanceté de nos pères qui ont péché devant toi.
8 And, behold, we are still in our captivity on this day, where you have scattered us into disgrace, and into slander, and into sin, according to all the iniquities of our fathers, who withdrew from you, O Lord our God.	8 Nous voici, aujourd'hui encore, en cet exil où tu nous as dispersés pour être un opprobre, unemalédiction, une condamnation, après toutes les fautes de nos pères, qui s'étaient éloignés du Seigneur notreDieu.
9 Listen, O Israel, to the commandments of life! Pay attention, so that you may learn prudence!	9 Ecoute, Israël, les préceptes de vie, tends l'oreille pour connaître la science.
10 How is it, O Israel, that you are in the land of your enemies,	10 Pourquoi, Israël, pourquoi es-tu au pays de tes ennemis, vieillissant en terre étrangère,
11 that you have grown old in a foreign land, that you are defiled with the dead, that you are regarded as among those who are descending into hell?	11 te souillant avec les morts, compté parmi ceux qui vont au shéol?
12 You have forsaken the fountain of wisdom.	12 C'est que tu abandonnas la Source de la Sagesse!
13 For if you had walked in the way of God, you would certainly have lived in everlasting peace.	13 Si tu avais marché dans la voie de Dieu, tu habiterais dans la paix pour toujours.
14 Learn where prudence is, where virtue is, where understanding is, so that you may know at the same time where long life and prosperity are, where the light of the eyes and peace are.	14 Apprends où est la science, où est la force, où est l'intelligence, pour connaître aussi où est lalongueur de jours et la vie, où est la lumière des yeux et la paix.
15 Who has discovered its place? And who has entered its treasure chamber?	15 Mais qui a découvert son lieu, qui a pénétré en ses trésors?
16 Where are the leaders of the peoples, and those who rule over the beasts that are upon the earth,	16 Où sont-ils les chefs des nations et les dominateurs des bêtes de la terre,
17 who play among the birds of the air,	17 ceux qui se jouent des oiseaux du ciel, ceux qui accumulent l'argent et l'or sur quoi les hommess'appuient, et dont les possessions n'ont pas de fin,
18 who store up treasures of silver and gold, in which men trust, and with whom there is no end to their acquiring, who work with silver and are anxious about it, and whose works are inexplicable?	18 ceux qui travaillent l'argent avec grand soin - mais leurs oeuvres ne laissent pas de traces?
19 They have been banished and have descended to hell, and others are risen up in their place.	19 Ils ont disparu, descendus au shéol! D'autres à leur place se sont levés,
20 The youth have seen the light and have dwelt upon the earth, yet they are ignorant of the way of instruction.	20 de plus jeunes ont vu la lumière et ont habité sur la terre: mais la voie de la connaissance ils ne l'ontpas connue,
21 They have neither understood the paths of it, nor have their sons accepted it. It is far from their face.	21 ils n'ont pas compris ses sentiers. Leurs fils non plus ne l'ont point saisie, ils sont restés loin de savoie.
22 It has not been heard of in the land of Canaan, nor has it been seen in Teman.	22 On n'a rien su d'elle en Canaan, on ne l'a pas aperçue à Témân;
23 It is likewise with the sons of Hagar, who search for the practicality that is of the earth, the negotiators of Merran and Teman, and the storytellers, and the searchers of discretion and intelligence. Yet the way of wisdom they have not known, nor have they called to mind its paths.	23 les fils d'Agar en quête d'intelligence ici-bas, les marchands de Madiân et de Téma, les diseurs deparaboles et les chercheurs d'intelligence n'ont pas connu la voie de la sagesse, ne se sont pas rappelés sessentiers.
24 O Israel, how great is the house of God, and how vast is the place of his possession!	24 Qu'elle est grande, Israël, la demeure de Dieu, qu'il est étendu le lieu de son domaine,
25 It is great and has no end! It is exalted and immense!	25 grand et sans borne, haut et immense!
26 There were those who were called giants, who existed from the beginning, of great stature, expert in war.	26 Là naquirent les géants, fameux dès l'origine, hauts de stature, experts à la guerre;
27 The Lord did not choose them, nor did they discover the way of instruction; for this reason they perished,	27 de ceux-là Dieu ne fit pas choix, il ne leur montra pas la voie de la connaissance;
28 and, because they did not have wisdom, they passed away as a result of their foolishness.	28 ils périrent, car ils n'avaient pas la science, ils périrent par leur folie.
29 Who has gone up into heaven, and taken her, and brought her down from the clouds?	29 Qui monta au ciel pour la saisir et la faire descendre des nuées?
30 Who has crossed the sea, and found her, and brought her, chosen instead of gold?	30 Qui passa la mer pour la découvrir et la rapporter au prix d'un or très pur?
31 There is no one who is able to know her ways, nor any who can search out her paths.	31 Nul ne connaît sa voie, nul ne comprend son sentier.
32 Yet he who knows the universe is familiar with her, and in his foresight he invented her, he who prepared the earth for time without end, and filled it with cattle and four-footed beasts,	32 Mais Celui qui sait tout la connaît, il l'a scrutée par son intelligence, lui qui pour l'éternité a disposéla terre et l'a emplie de bétail,
33 who sends out the light, and it goes, and who summoned it, and it obeyed him in fear.	33 lui qui envoie la lumière, et elle part, qui la rappelle, et elle obéit en tremblant;
34 Yet the stars have given light from their posts, and they rejoiced.	34 les étoiles brillent à leur poste, joyeuses:
35 They were called, and so they said, “Here we are,” and they shined with cheerfulness to him who made them.	35 les appelle-t-il, elles répondent: Nous voici! elles brillent avec joie pour leur Créateur.
36 This is our God, and no other can compare to him.	36 C'est lui qui est notre Dieu: aucun autre ne lui est comparable.
37 He invented the way of all instruction, and delivered it to Jacob his child, and to Israel his beloved.	37 Il a creusé la voie entière de la connaissance et l'a montrée à Jacob, son serviteur, à Israël, son bien-aimé;
38 After this, he was seen on earth, and he conversed with men.	38 puis elle est apparue sur terre et elle a vécu parmi les hommes.
