Sirach 17

1 God created man from the earth, and he made him according to his own image.	1 Dio formò l'uomo dalla terra, lo creò a sua imagine,
2 And he returned him again to it, and he clothed him with virtue according to himself.	2 e di nuovo lo fa ritornare alla terra. E secondo la sua natura lo rivestì di forza.
3 He gave him the number and time of his days, and he gave him authority over all the things that are upon the earth.	3 Assegnò a lui un numero di giorni, un dato tempo, e gli diede l'impero delle cose che sono sopra la terra.
4 He placed the fear of him over all flesh, and he had dominion over wild beasts and flying things.	4 Lo rese terribile a tutti gli animali, in modo che do minasse bestie e volatili.
5 He created from him a helper, similar to himself. He gave them counsel, and language, and sight, and hearing, and a heart, in order to think. And he filled them with the discipline of understanding.	5 Creò, traendolo dalla sua sostanza, un aiuto simile a lui, e diede loro consiglio, lingua, occhi, orecchi, diede loro un cuore per pensare, li riempì del sapere dell'intelletto.
6 He created within them the knowledge of the spirit. He filled their heart with understanding, and he showed them both good and evil.	6 Creò in essi la scienza dello spirito, riempì il loro cuore di senno, e fece loro conoscere il bene e il male.
7 He set his eye upon their hearts, to reveal to them the greatness of his works,	7 Pose il suo occhio sopra i loro cuori, per mostrar loro le grandezze delle sue opere,
8 so that they might highly praise the name of sanctification, and give glory to his wonders, so that they might declare the greatness of his works.	8 affinchè essi dian lode al suo nome santo, e lo glorifichino nelle sue maraviglie, e raccontino le grandezze delle sue opere.
9 In addition, he gave them discipline and the law of life, as their inheritance.	9 Di più diede loro la scienza, e, come retaggio, la legge della vita.
10 He established an eternal covenant with them, and he revealed to them his justice and judgments.	10 Stabilì con essi un patto eterno, e fece loro conoscere la sua giustizia e i suoi comandamenti.
11 And their eye saw the greatness of his honor, and their ears heard the honor of his voice, and he said to them: “Beware of all iniquity.”	11 I loro occhi videro le grandezze della sua gloria e la maestà della sua voce ferì le loro orecchie. Egli disse loro: « Guardatevi da ogni iniquità ».
12 And he commanded each one concerning his neighbor.	12 E comandò a ciascuno di aver cura del suo prossimo.
13 Their ways are always in his sight; they are not hidden from his eyes.	13 Gli andamenti degli uomini gli stanno sempre davanti: essi non possono essere nascosti agli occhi di lui.
14 Over each and every people, he has appointed a ruler.	14 Ad ogni nazione assegnò un capo;
15 And Israel was made to be the manifest portion of God.	15 ma Israele è chiaramente la porzione del Signore.
16 And in the sight of God, all their works are like the sun. And his eyes, without ceasing, inspect their ways.	16 Tutte le loro azioni sono come il sole al cospetto di Dio, e gli occhi di lui sono fìssi continuamente sopra i loro andamenti.
17 The covenants are not hidden by their iniquity, and all their iniquities are in the sight of God.	17 La sua alleanza non è stata nascosta per le loro iniquità, e tutte le loro iniquità sono alla presenza del Signore.
18 The almsgiving of a man is like a seal upon him, which will guard the grace of a man like the pupil of an eye.	18 L'elemosina dell'uomo è per lui come un sigillo; egli terrà conto dell'opera buona dell'uomo come della pupilla del suo occhio.
19 And afterward, it will rise up and repay them their reward, each one upon his head, and it will return to the hidden places of the earth.	19 E finalmente si leverà (in giudizio), e darà il meritato a ciascuno in particolare e li farà ritornare nel profondo della terra.
20 Now, to the repentant, he has given the way of justice, and he has strengthened those lacking in patience, and he has fastened them to a destiny of truth.	20 Ma ai penitenti dona la via della giustizia; non lascia di sostenere i deboli, ed ha destinato ad essi il retaggio della verità.
21 Convert to the Lord, and relinquish your sins.	21 Torna al Signore, e lascia i tuoi peccati.
22 Make supplication before the face of the Lord, and diminish your offenses.	22 Prega dinanzi al Signore e diminuisci le occasioni di cadere.
23 Return to the Lord, and turn away from your injustice, and have immense hatred for abomination.	23 Ritorna al Signore, e volgi le spalle all'ingiustizia, ed abbi sommamente in odio ogni atto esecrando.
24 And acknowledge the justices and judgments of God, and stand firm in the circumstances set before you and in prayer to the most high God.	24 Conosci i comandamenti e i giudizi di Dio, e sta costante nella sorte che t'è proposta e nel pregare l'Altissimo Dio.
25 Go to the side of the holy generation, to those who live in order to give praise to God.	25 Entra a parte del secolo santo con quelli che vivono e dànno gloria a Dio.
26 You should not linger in the error of the impious; confess before death. Confession perishes from the dead as if it were nothing.	26 Non ti fermare nell'errore degli empi. Dà lode a Dio avanti di morire: se vien dal morto, come dal niente, la lode è perduta.
27 Confess while living; you should give thanks while you are still alive and healthy. And you should praise God and glory in his compassion.	27 Da vivo lo glorificherai, da vivo e da sano lo glorificherai, e darai lode a Dio e ti glorierai delle sue misericordie.
28 How great is the mercy of the Lord, and his forgiveness, for those who convert to him!	28 Quanto è mai grande la misericordia del Signore, e la sua benegnità verso quelli che tornano a lui!
29 For not all things can be in men, because the son of man is not immortal, and because they are pleased by the emptiness of malice.	29 Perchè non tutte le cose possono essere negli uomini, e non è immortale il figlio dell'uomo, e si diletta nella vanità e nella malizia.
30 What is brighter than the sun? Yet this will fail. Or what is more wicked than that which flesh and blood has invented? And this will be reproved.	30 Che v'ha di più luminoso del sole? Eppure s'ecelissa. E che v'ha di peggio dei pensieri della carne e del sangue? Saran puniti.
31 He beholds the power of the heights of heaven. And all men are earth and ashes.	31 Egli contempla l'armata degli alti cieli, e gli uomini tutti son terra e cenere.
