1 The words of Ecclesiastes, the son of David, the king of Jerusalem.	1 Paroles de l'Ecclésiaste, fils de David, roi de Jérusalem.
2 Ecclesiastes said: Vanity of vanities! Vanity of vanities, and all is vanity!	2 Vanité des vanités, dit l'Ecclésiaste; vanité des vanités, et tout est vanité.
3 What more does a man have from all his labor, as he labors under the sun?	3 Quel profit revient-il à l'homme de tout le travail qui l'occupe sous le soleil?
4 A generation passes away, and a generation arrives. But the earth stands forever.	4 Une génération passe, et une génération vient; mais la terre subsiste à jamais.
5 The sun rises and sets; it returns to its place, and from there, being born again,	5 Le soleil se lève et se couche, et il revient à son point de départ; et là, renaissant
6 it circles through the south, and arcs toward the north. The spirit continues on, illuminating everything in its circuit, and turning again in its cycle.	6 Il tourne vers le midi, et se dirige vers le nord. Parcourant tous les lieux, le vent s'élance en tournant, et il revient sur ses circuits.
7 All rivers enter into the sea, and the sea does not overflow. To the place from which the rivers go out, they return, so that they may flow again.	7 Tous les fleuves entrent dans la mer, et la mer ne déborde pas; les fleuves retournent au lieu d'où ils étaient sortis, pour couler de nouveau.
8 Such things are difficult; man is not able to explain them with words. The eye is not satisfied by seeing, nor is the ear fulfilled by hearing.	8 Toutes choses sont difficiles; l'homme ne peut les expliquer par la parole. L'oeil ne se rassasie pas de voir, et l'oreille ne se lasse pas d'entendre.
9 What is it that has existed? The same shall exist in the future. What is it that has been done? The same shall continue to be done.	9 Qu'est-ce qui a été? C'est ce qui sera plus tard. Qu'est-ce qui s'est fait? C'est ce qui doit se faire encore.
10 There is nothing new under the sun. Neither is anyone able to say: “Behold, this is new!” For it has already been brought forth in the ages that were before us.	10 Il n'y a rien de nouveau sous le soleil, et nul ne peut dire: Voici une chose nouvelle; car elle a déjà existé dans les siècles qui étaient avant nous.
11 There is no remembrance of the former things. Indeed, neither shall there be any record of past things in the future, for those who will exist at the very end.	11 On ne se souvient pas des choses anciennes, et ce qui arrivera dans la suite ne laissera pas non plus de souvenir chez ceux qui vivront plus tard.
12 I, Ecclesiastes, was king of Israel at Jerusalem.	12 Moi l'Ecclésiaste, j'ai été roi d'Israël à Jérusalem;
13 And I was determined in my mind to seek and to investigate wisely, concerning all that is done under the sun. God has given this very difficult task to the sons of men, so that they may be occupied by it.	13 et je résolus en moi-même de chercher et d'examiner avec sagesse tout ce qui se passe sous le soleil. Dieu a donné aux fils des hommes cette fâcheuse occupation, afin qu'ils s'y exercent.
14 I have seen all that is done under the sun, and behold: all is emptiness and an affliction of the spirit.	14 J'ai vu tout ce qui se fait sous le soleil, et voici que tout est vanité et affliction d'esprit.
15 The perverse are unwilling to be corrected, and the number of the foolish is boundless.	15 Les pervers se corrigent difficilement, et le nombre des insensés est infini.
16 I have spoken in my heart, saying: “Behold, I have achieved greatness, and I have surpassed all the wise who were before me in Jerusalem.” And my mind has contemplated many things wisely, and I have learned.	16 J'ai dit dans mon coeur: Voici que je suis devenu grand, et j'ai surpassé en sagesse tous ceux qui ont été avant moi à Jérusalem, et mon esprit a contemplé beaucoup de choses avec sagesse, et je me suis instruit.
17 And I have dedicated my heart, so that I may know prudence and doctrine, and also error and foolishness. Yet I recognize that, in these things also, there is hardship, and affliction of the spirit.	17 Et j'ai appliqué mon coeur à connaître la prudence et la doctrine, les erreurs et la folie, et j'ai reconnu qu'en cela aussi il y a peine et affliction d'esprit,
18 Because of this, with much wisdom there is also much anger. And whoever adds knowledge, also adds hardship.	18 car avec beaucoup de sagesse il y a beaucoup d'indignation, et celui qui augmente sa science augmente aussi sa peine.
