1 The words of Ecclesiastes, the son of David, the king of Jerusalem.	1 Le parole del Predicatore, figliuolo di Davide, re in Gerusalemme.
2 Ecclesiastes said: Vanity of vanities! Vanity of vanities, and all is vanity!	2 VANITÀ delle vanità, dice il Predicatore; vanità delle vanità; ogni cosa è vanità.
3 What more does a man have from all his labor, as he labors under the sun?	3 Che profitto ha l’uomo di tutta la sua fatica nella quale egli si affatica sotto il sole?
4 A generation passes away, and a generation arrives. But the earth stands forever.	4 Una età va via, un’altra età viene; e la terra resta in perpetuo.
5 The sun rises and sets; it returns to its place, and from there, being born again,	5 Il sole si leva anch’esso, e poi tramonta; e, ansando, trae verso il luogo suo, ove egli si deve levare.
6 it circles through the south, and arcs toward the north. The spirit continues on, illuminating everything in its circuit, and turning again in its cycle.	6 Il vento trae verso il Mezzodì, e poi gira verso il Settentrione; egli va sempre girando, e ritorna a’ suoi giri.
7 All rivers enter into the sea, and the sea does not overflow. To the place from which the rivers go out, they return, so that they may flow again.	7 Tutti i fiumi corrono nel mare, e il mare non s’empie; i fiumi ritornano sempre a correre al luogo dove sogliono correre.
8 Such things are difficult; man is not able to explain them with words. The eye is not satisfied by seeing, nor is the ear fulfilled by hearing.	8 Ogni cosa si affatica più che l’uomo non può dire; l’occhio non si sazia giammai di vedere, e l’orecchio non si riempie di udire
9 What is it that has existed? The same shall exist in the future. What is it that has been done? The same shall continue to be done.	9 Quello che è stato è lo stesso che sarà; e quello che è stato fatto è lo stesso che si farà; e non vi è nulla di nuovo sotto il sole.
10 There is nothing new under the sun. Neither is anyone able to say: “Behold, this is new!” For it has already been brought forth in the ages that were before us.	10 Evvi cosa alcuna, della quale altri possa dire: Vedi questo, egli è nuovo? già è stato ne’ secoli che sono stati avanti a noi.
11 There is no remembrance of the former things. Indeed, neither shall there be any record of past things in the future, for those who will exist at the very end.	11 Non vi è alcuna memoria delle cose che sono state innanzi; così ancora non vi sarà memoria delle cose che saranno nel tempo a venire, fra coloro che verranno appresso
12 I, Ecclesiastes, was king of Israel at Jerusalem.	12 Io, il Predicatore, sono stato re sopra Israele, in Gerusalemme;
13 And I was determined in my mind to seek and to investigate wisely, concerning all that is done under the sun. God has given this very difficult task to the sons of men, so that they may be occupied by it.	13 ed ho recato il mio cuore a ricercare, e ad investigare, con sapienza, tutto ciò che si fa sotto il cielo; il che è una occupazione molesta, la quale Iddio ha data a’ figliuoli degli uomini, per occuparvisi.
14 I have seen all that is done under the sun, and behold: all is emptiness and an affliction of the spirit.	14 Io ho vedute tutte le cose che si fanno sotto il sole; ed ecco, tutto ciò è vanità, e tormento di spirito.
15 The perverse are unwilling to be corrected, and the number of the foolish is boundless.	15 Le cose torte non si possono dirizzare; e i difetti non si possono annoverare.
16 I have spoken in my heart, saying: “Behold, I have achieved greatness, and I have surpassed all the wise who were before me in Jerusalem.” And my mind has contemplated many things wisely, and I have learned.	16 Io parlava nel cuor mio, dicendo: Ecco, io mi sono aggrandito, ed accresciuto in sapienza, più che tutti quelli che sono stati innanzi a me sopra Gerusalemme; e il cuor mio ha veduta molta sapienza e scienza;
17 And I have dedicated my heart, so that I may know prudence and doctrine, and also error and foolishness. Yet I recognize that, in these things also, there is hardship, and affliction of the spirit.	17 ed ho recato il mio cuore a conoscere la sapienza; ed anche a conoscere le pazzie e la stoltizia; ed ho riconosciuto che questo ancora è un tormento di spirito.
18 Because of this, with much wisdom there is also much anger. And whoever adds knowledge, also adds hardship.	18 Perciocchè, dove è molta sapienza, vi è molta molestia; e chi accresce la scienza accresce il dolore
