1 The words of Ecclesiastes, the son of David, the king of Jerusalem.	1 Paroles de Qohélet, fils de David, roi à Jérusalem.
2 Ecclesiastes said: Vanity of vanities! Vanity of vanities, and all is vanity!	2 Vanité des vanités, dit Qohélet; vanité des vanités, tout est vanité.
3 What more does a man have from all his labor, as he labors under the sun?	3 Quel profit trouve l'homme à toute la peine qu'il prend sous le soleil?
4 A generation passes away, and a generation arrives. But the earth stands forever.	4 Un âge va, un âge vient, mais la terre tient toujours.
5 The sun rises and sets; it returns to its place, and from there, being born again,	5 Le soleil se lève, le soleil se couche, il se hâte vers son lieu et c'est là qu'il se lève.
6 it circles through the south, and arcs toward the north. The spirit continues on, illuminating everything in its circuit, and turning again in its cycle.	6 Le vent part au midi, tourne au nord, il tourne, tourne et va, et sur son parcours retourne le vent.
7 All rivers enter into the sea, and the sea does not overflow. To the place from which the rivers go out, they return, so that they may flow again.	7 Tous les fleuves coulent vers la mer et la mer n'est pas remplie. Vers l'endroit où coulent lesfleuves, c'est par là qu'ils continueront de couler.
8 Such things are difficult; man is not able to explain them with words. The eye is not satisfied by seeing, nor is the ear fulfilled by hearing.	8 Toute parole est lassante! Personne ne peut dire que l'oeil n'est pas rassasié de voir, et l'oreillesaturée par ce qu'elle a entendu.
9 What is it that has existed? The same shall exist in the future. What is it that has been done? The same shall continue to be done.	9 Ce qui fut, cela sera, ce qui s'est fait se refera, et il n'y a rien de nouveau sous le soleil!
10 There is nothing new under the sun. Neither is anyone able to say: “Behold, this is new!” For it has already been brought forth in the ages that were before us.	10 Qu'il y ait quelque chose dont on dise: "Tiens, voilà du nouveau", cela fut dans les siècles quinous ont précédés.
11 There is no remembrance of the former things. Indeed, neither shall there be any record of past things in the future, for those who will exist at the very end.	11 Il n'y a pas de souvenir d'autrefois, et même pour ceux des temps futurs: il n'y aura d'eux aucunsouvenir auprès de ceux qui les suivront.
12 I, Ecclesiastes, was king of Israel at Jerusalem.	12 Moi, Qohélet, j'ai été roi d'Israël à Jérusalem.
13 And I was determined in my mind to seek and to investigate wisely, concerning all that is done under the sun. God has given this very difficult task to the sons of men, so that they may be occupied by it.	13 J'ai mis tout mon coeur à rechercher et à explorer par la sagesse tout ce qui se fait sous le ciel.C'est une mauvaise besogne que Dieu a donnée aux enfants des hommes pour qu'ils s'y emploient.
14 I have seen all that is done under the sun, and behold: all is emptiness and an affliction of the spirit.	14 J'ai regardé toutes les oeuvres qui se font sous le soleil: Eh bien, tout est vanité et poursuite devent!
15 The perverse are unwilling to be corrected, and the number of the foolish is boundless.	15 Ce qui est courbé ne peut être redressé, ce qui manque ne peut être compté.
16 I have spoken in my heart, saying: “Behold, I have achieved greatness, and I have surpassed all the wise who were before me in Jerusalem.” And my mind has contemplated many things wisely, and I have learned.	16 Je me suis dit à moi-même: Voici que j'ai amassé et accumulé la sagesse plus que quiconqueavant moi à Jérusalem, et, en moi-même, j'ai pénétré toute sorte de sagesse et de savoir.
17 And I have dedicated my heart, so that I may know prudence and doctrine, and also error and foolishness. Yet I recognize that, in these things also, there is hardship, and affliction of the spirit.	17 J'ai mis tout mon coeur à comprendre la sagesse et le savoir, la sottise et la folie, et j'ai comprisque tout cela aussi est recherche de vent.
18 Because of this, with much wisdom there is also much anger. And whoever adds knowledge, also adds hardship.	18 Beaucoup de sagesse, beaucoup de chagrin; plus de savoir, plus de douleur.
