1 Then Zophar the Naamathite answered by saying:	1 Sofar de Nahama prit alors la parole:
2 In response, various thoughts succeed one another in me, and my mind moves quickly through different ideas.	2 Ceci justifie mes réflexions: je veux répondre et dire tout ce que je sens.
3 The teaching you use to admonish me, I will hear, and the spirit of my understanding will respond for me.	3 Quand on me remet en place de façon humiliante, mes pensées m’inspirent une réponse.
4 This, I know, is from the beginning, from the time that man was set over the earth:	4 Ne sais-tu pas que depuis toujours, depuis que l’homme a été mis sur terre,
5 that the praise of the impious shall be short, and the joy of the hypocrite lasts only a moment.	5 le triomphe des méchants est de courte durée la joie de l’impie n’est que d’un instant.
6 If his pride ascends even towards the heavens, and his head touches the clouds,	6 Sa taille a beau s’élever jusqu’au ciel, et sa tête toucher les nuages,
7 in the end, he will be destroyed like a trash heap, and those who had seen him will say: “Where is he?”	7 comme un fantôme il disparaît pour toujours, et ceux qui le voyaient demandent: “Où est-il?”
8 Like a dream that flies away, he will not be found; he will pass away like a nightmare.	8 C’est comme un rêve envolé: on ne le trouve plus, comme un fantasme de la nuit: il a fui.
9 The eyes that had seen him, will not see him; no longer will his own place admire him.	9 On s’était habitué à le voir: c’est fini, les lieux qu’il fréquentait ne le reverront plus.
10 His sons will be worn away by poverty, and his own hands will deliver his grief to him.	10 20:11 Sa carcasse était pleine de force juvénile, la voilà couchée avec lui dans la poussière!
11 His bones will be filled with the vices of his youth, and they will sleep with him in the dust.	11 20:12 Sa bouche savourait le mal, il le cachait sous sa langue,
12 For, when evil will be sweet in his mouth, he will hide it under his tongue.	12 20:13 il l’aimait tant qu’il ne le lâchait pas mais le gardait sous son palais…
13 He will permit it, and not abandon it, and he will conceal it in his throat.	13 20:14 Mais cette nourriture se change en ses entrailles, elle devient un poison dans son ventre:
14 His bread in his belly will be turned into the venom of snakes within him.	14 20:15 le voici qui vomit les richesses dévorées, Dieu les fait ressortir de son ventre.
15 The riches that he devours, he will vomit up, and from his stomach God will draw them out.	15 20:16 Il suçait du venin de serpent: c’est une morsure de vipère qui le tue!
16 He will suck the head of snakes, and the tongue of the viper will kill him.	16 20:17 Il ne reverra pas les ruisseaux d’huile fraîche, les torrents de miel et de crème.
17 (May he never see the streams of the river, the torrents of honey and butter.)	17 20:18 Il lui faut rendre son gain: il n’a pu l’avaler; les fruits de son commerce ne seront pas pour lui.
18 He will be repaid for all he has done, yet he will not be consumed; according to the multitude of his schemes, so also will he suffer.	18 20:19 C’est qu’il opprimait les pauvres, il volait la maison au lieu de la bâtir.
19 For, having broken in, he stripped the poor. He has quickly stolen away a house he did not build.	19 20:10 Ses fils rembourseront les pauvres, de ses mains, peut-être, il redonnera sa fortune.
20 And yet his stomach will not be satisfied, and when he has the things he desires, he will not be able to possess them.	20 Sa cupidité n’était jamais satisfaite, on ne se sauvait pas de son appétit:
21 Nothing remained of his portion, and, because of this, nothing will continue of his kind.	21 il dévorait et nul n’y échappait. C’est pourquoi son bonheur n’a pas duré.
22 When he will be satisfied, he will be constrained; he will seethe, and all anguish will fall upon him.	22 En pleine réussite, les problèmes l’assaillent, et le malheur le frappe à coups redoublés.
23 May his stomach be filled, so that God may send forth the fury of his wrath to him and may rain down his battle upon him.	23 Alors qu’il est en train de se remplir le ventre, Dieu décharge sur lui sa colère et fait pleuvoir sur lui ses flèches.
24 He will flee from weapons of iron, and he will fall in an arc of brass,	24 Échappe-t-il à la lame de fer? l’arc de bronze le transperce!
25 which had been drawn and had issued forth from its sheath, glittering in its bitterness: the horrible ones will go forth and approach over him.	25 La flèche est ressortie par son dos, la pointe a traversé son foie: le voilà sous le coup d’une angoisse de mort,
26 All darkness has been hidden in his secrecy. A fire that has not been set will devour him; he will be thrown down and forsaken in his tabernacle.	26 et son destin, ce sont les ténèbres. Un feu que nul n’a allumé le dévore et consume les survivants de sa tente.
27 The heavens will reveal his sinfulness, and the earth will rise up against him.	27 Les cieux ont dévoilé ses crimes, et la terre se soulève contre lui.
28 The offspring of his house will be exposed; he will be pulled down in the day of God’s wrath.	28 L’inondation emporte sa maison: ce sont les eaux de la colère de Dieu.
29 This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the inheritance of his words from the Lord.	29 Voilà le sort que Dieu réserve au méchant, l’héritage que Dieu lui promet.
