1 Now Jacob lived in the land of Canaan, where his father sojourned.	1 Jacó habitou na região onde seu pai havia morado, na terra de Canaã.
2 And these are his generations. Joseph, when he was sixteen years old, was pasturing the flock with his brothers, when he was still a boy. And he was with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, the wives of his father. And he accused his brothers to their father of a most sinful crime.	2 Eis a história da descendência de Jacó: José, ainda jovem, com a idade de dezessete anos, apascentava o rebanho com seus irmãos, os filhos de Bala e os filhos de Zelfa, mulheres de seu pai; e ele contou ao seu pai as más conversas dos irmãos.
3 Now Israel loved Joseph above all his sons, because he had conceived him in his old age. And he made him a tunic, woven of many colors.	3 Israel amava José mais do que todos os outros filhos, porque ele era o filho de sua velhice; e mandara-lhe fazer uma túnica de várias cores.
4 Then his brothers, seeing that he was loved by his father more than all his other sons, hated him, and they were not able to say anything peacefully to him.	4 Seus irmãos, vendo que seu pai o preferia a eles, conceberam ódio contra ele e não podiam mais tratá-lo com bons modos.
5 Then it also happened that he recounted the vision of a dream to his brothers, for which reason a greater hatred began to be nurtured.	5 Ora, José teve um sonho, e o contou aos seus irmãos, que o detestaram ainda mais:
6 And he said to them, “Listen to my dream that I saw.	6 "Ouvi, disse-lhes ele, o sonho que tive:
7 I thought we were binding sheaves in the field. And my sheaf seemed to rise up and stand, and your sheaves, standing in a circle, reverenced my sheaf.”	7 estávamos ligando feixes no campo, e eis que o meu feixe se levantou e se pôs de pé, enquanto os vossos o cercavam e se prostravam diante dele."
8 His brothers responded: “Would you be our king? Or will we be subject to your dominion?” Therefore, this matter of his dreams and words provided kindling to their envy and hatred.	8 Seus irmãos disseram-lhe: "Quererias, porventura, reinar sobre nós e tornar-te nosso senhor?" E odiaram-no ainda mais por causa de seus sonhos e de suas palavras.
9 Likewise, he saw another dream, which he explained to his brothers, saying, “I saw by a dream, as if the sun, and the moon, and eleven stars were reverencing me.”	9 José teve ainda outro sonho, que contou aos seus irmãos. "Tive, disse ele, ainda um sonho: o sol, a lua e onze estrelas prostravam-se diante de mim."
10 And when he had related this to his father and brothers, his father rebuked him, and he said: “What does it mean to you, this dream that you have seen? Should I, and your mother, and your brothers reverence you upon the earth?”	10 Ele contou isso ao seu pai e aos seus irmãos, mas foi repreendido por seu pai: "Que significa, disse-lhe ele, este sonho que tiveste? Viremos, porventura, eu, tua mãe e teus irmãos, a nos prostrar por terra diante de ti?"
11 Therefore, his brothers were envious of him. Yet truly, his father considered the matter silently.	11 Seus irmãos ficaram, pois, com inveja dele, mas seu pai guardou a lembrança desse acontecimento.
12 And while his brothers were lodging at Shechem, pasturing their father’s flocks,	12 Os irmãos de José foram apascentar os rebanhos de seu pai em Siquém.
13 Israel said to him: “Your brothers are pasturing the sheep at Shechem. Come, I will send you to them.” And when he answered,	13 Israel disse a José: "Teus irmãos guardam os rebanhos em Siquém. Vem: vou mandar-te a eles." "Eis-me aqui", respondeu José.
14 “I am ready,” he said to him, “Go, and see if everything is prospering with your brothers and the cattle, and report to me what is happening.” So, having been sent from the valley of Hebron, he arrived at Shechem.	14 "Vai, pois, ver se tudo corre bem a teus irmãos e ao rebanho, e traze-me notícias deles." Enviou-o do vale de Hebron, e José foi a Siquém.
15 And a man found him wandering in a field, and he asked him what he was seeking.	15 Um homem encontrou-o errando pelo campo: "Que buscas?" perguntou ele.
16 So he responded: “I seek my brothers. Tell me where they pasture the flocks.”	16 "Busco meus irmãos, respondeu ele. Dize-me onde apascentam os rebanhos."
17 And the man said to him: “They have withdrawn from this place. But I heard them saying, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’ ” Therefore, Joseph continued on after his brothers, and he found them at Dothan.	17 E o homem respondeu: "Partiram daqui e ouvi-os dizer: Vamos a Dotain." Partiu então José em busca dos seus irmãos e encontrou-os em Dotain.
18 And, when they had seen him from afar, before he approached them, they decided to kill him.	18 Eles o viram de longe. Antes que José se aproximasse, combinaram entre si como o haveriam de matar;
19 And they said one to another: “Behold, the dreamer approaches.	19 e disseram: "Eis o sonhador que chega.
20 Come, let us kill him and cast him into the old cistern. And let us say: ‘an evil wild beast has devoured him.’ And then it will become apparent what his dreams will do for him.”	20 Vamos, matemo-lo e atiremo-lo numa cisterna; diremos depois que uma fera o devorou; e então veremos de que lhe aproveitaram os seus sonhos."
21 But Reuben, on hearing this, strove to free him from their hands, and he said:	21 Ouvindo-o, porém, Rubem, quis livra-lo de suas mãos: "Não lhe tiremos a vida, disse ele.
22 “Do not take away his life, nor shed blood. But throw him into this cistern, which is in the wilderness, and so keep your hands harmless.” But he said this, wanting to rescue him from their hands, so as to return him to his father.	22 Não derrameis sangue. Jogai-o naquela cisterna, no deserto, mas não levanteis vossa mão contra ele." Pois Rubem pensava livrá-lo de suas mãos para o reconduzir ao pai.
23 And so, as soon as he came to his brothers, they very quickly stripped him of his tunic, which was ankle-length and woven of many colors,	23 Quando José se aproximou de seus irmãos, eles o despojaram de sua túnica, daquela bela túnica de várias cores que trazia,
24 and they cast him into an old cistern, which held no water.	24 e jogaram-no numa cisterna velha, que não tinha água.
25 And sitting down to eat bread, they saw some Ishmaelites, travelers coming from Gilead, with their camels, carrying spices, and resin, and oil of myrrh into Egypt.	25 E, sentando-se para comer, eis que, levantando os olhos, viram surgir no horizonte uma caravana de ismaelitas vinda de Galaad. Seus camelos estavam carregados de resina, de bálsamo e de ládano, que transportavam para o Egito.
26 Therefore, Judah said to his brothers: “What will it profit us, if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?	26 Então Judá disse aos seus irmãos: "Que nos aproveita matar nosso irmão e ocultar o seu sangue?
27 It is better that he be sold to the Ishmaelites, and then our hands will not be defiled. For he is our brother and our flesh.” His brothers agreed to his words.	27 Vinde e vendamo-lo aos ismaelitas. Não levantemos nossas mãos contra ele, pois, afinal, é nosso irmão, nossa carne." Seus irmãos concordaram.
28 And when the Midianite merchants were passing by, they drew him from the cistern, and they sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. And these led him into Egypt.	28 E, quando passaram os negociantes madianitas, tiraram José da cisterna e venderam-no por vinte moedas de prata aos ismaelitas, que o levaram para o Egito.
29 And Reuben, returning to the cistern, did not find the boy.	29 Rubem voltou à cisterna, e eis que José já não estava ali.
30 And rending his garments, he went to his brothers and said, “The boy is not present, and so where shall I go?”	30 Rasgou então suas vestes e voltou para junto dos seus irmãos: "O menino desapareceu, disse ele. E eu, para onde irei?"
31 Then they took his tunic, and they dipped it in the blood of a young goat, which they had killed,	31 Tomaram então a túnica de José, mataram um cabrito e a mergulharam no seu sangue.
32 sending those who carried it to their father, and they said: “We found this. See whether it is the tunic of your son or not.”	32 E mandaram-na levar ao seu pai com esta mensagem: "Eis o que encontramos: vê se não é, porventura, a túnica do teu filho."
33 And when the father acknowledged it, he said: “It is the tunic of my son. An evil wild beast has eaten him; a beast has devoured Joseph.”	33 Jacó reconheceu-a e exclamou: "É a túnica de meu filho! Uma fera o devorou! José foi estraçalhado!"
34 And tearing his garments, he was clothed in haircloth, mourning his son for a long time.	34 E, rasgando as vestes, cobriu-se de um saco, e chorou o seu filho por muito tempo.
35 Then, when all of his sons gathered together to ease their father’s sorrow, he was not willing to accept consolation, but he said: “I will descend in mourning to my son in the underworld.” And while he persevered in weeping,	35 Todos os seus filhos e filhas vieram consolá-lo, mas ele não aceitou nenhuma condolência: "É chorando, disse ele, que descerei para junto de meu filho na habitação dos mortos." Foi assim que o seu pai o chorou.
36 the Midianites in Egypt sold Joseph to Potiphar, a eunuch of Pharaoh, instructor of the soldiers.	36 Os madianitas venderam-no a Putifar, no Egito, eunuco do faraó e chefe da guarda.
