1 Now Jacob lived in the land of Canaan, where his father sojourned.	1 Jacob, por su parte, se estableció en el que fue país residencial de su padre, el país de Canaán.
2 And these are his generations. Joseph, when he was sixteen years old, was pasturing the flock with his brothers, when he was still a boy. And he was with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, the wives of his father. And he accused his brothers to their father of a most sinful crime.	2 Esta es la historia de Jacob. José tenía diecisiete años. Estaba de pastor de ovejas con sus hermanos - él, muchacho todavía, con los hijos de Bilhá y los de Zilpá, mujeres de su padre. Y José comunicó a su padre lo mal que se hablaba de ellos.
3 Now Israel loved Joseph above all his sons, because he had conceived him in his old age. And he made him a tunic, woven of many colors.	3 Israel amaba a José más que a todos los demás hijos, por ser para él el hijo de la ancianidad. Le había hecho una túnica de manga larga.
4 Then his brothers, seeing that he was loved by his father more than all his other sons, hated him, and they were not able to say anything peacefully to him.	4 Vieron sus hermanos cómo le prefería su padre a todos sus otros hijos, y le aborrecieron hasta el punto de no poder ni siquiera saludarle.
5 Then it also happened that he recounted the vision of a dream to his brothers, for which reason a greater hatred began to be nurtured.	5 José tuvo un sueño y lo manifestó a sus hermanos, quienes le odiaron más aún.
6 And he said to them, “Listen to my dream that I saw.	6 Les dijo: «Oíd el sueño que he tenido.
7 I thought we were binding sheaves in the field. And my sheaf seemed to rise up and stand, and your sheaves, standing in a circle, reverenced my sheaf.”	7 Me parecía que nosotros estábamos atando gavillas en el campo, y he aquí que mi gavilla se levantaba y se tenía derecha, mientras que vuestras gavillas le hacían rueda y se inclinaban hacia la mía.»
8 His brothers responded: “Would you be our king? Or will we be subject to your dominion?” Therefore, this matter of his dreams and words provided kindling to their envy and hatred.	8 Sus hermanos le dijeron: «¿Será que vas a reinar sobre nosotros o que vas a tenernos domeñados?» Y acumularon todavía más odio contra él por causa de sus sueños y de su palabras.
9 Likewise, he saw another dream, which he explained to his brothers, saying, “I saw by a dream, as if the sun, and the moon, and eleven stars were reverencing me.”	9 Volvió a tener otro sueño, y se lo contó a sus hermanos. Díjoles: «He tenido otro sueño: Resulta que el sol, la luna y once estrellas se inclinaban ante mí.»
10 And when he had related this to his father and brothers, his father rebuked him, and he said: “What does it mean to you, this dream that you have seen? Should I, and your mother, and your brothers reverence you upon the earth?”	10 Se lo contó a su padre y a sus hermanos, y su padre le reprendió y le dijo: «¿Qué sueño es ése que has tenido? ¿Es que yo, tu madre y tus hermanos vamos a venir a inclinarnos ante ti hasta el suelo?»
11 Therefore, his brothers were envious of him. Yet truly, his father considered the matter silently.	11 Sus hermanos le tenían envidia, mientras que su padre reflexionaba.
12 And while his brothers were lodging at Shechem, pasturing their father’s flocks,	12 Fueron sus hermanos a apacentar las ovejas de su padre en Siquem,
13 Israel said to him: “Your brothers are pasturing the sheep at Shechem. Come, I will send you to them.” And when he answered,	13 y dijo Israel a José: «¿No están tus hermanos pastoreando en Siquem? Ve de mi parte a donde ellos.» Dijo: «Estoy listo.»
14 “I am ready,” he said to him, “Go, and see if everything is prospering with your brothers and the cattle, and report to me what is happening.” So, having been sent from the valley of Hebron, he arrived at Shechem.	14 Díjole: «Anda, vete a ver si tus hermanos siguen sin novedad, y lo mismo el ganado, y tráeme noticias.» Le envió, pues, desde el valle de Hebrón, y José fue a Siquem.
15 And a man found him wandering in a field, and he asked him what he was seeking.	15 Encontróse con él un hombre mientras estaba discurriendo por el campo. El hombre le preguntó: «¿Qué buscas?»
16 So he responded: “I seek my brothers. Tell me where they pasture the flocks.”	16 Díjole: «Estoy buscando a mis hermanos. Indícame, por favor, dónde están pastoreando.»
17 And the man said to him: “They have withdrawn from this place. But I heard them saying, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’ ” Therefore, Joseph continued on after his brothers, and he found them at Dothan.	17 El hombre le dijo: «Partieron de aquí, pues yo les oí decir: “Vamos a Dotán.”» José fue detrás de sus hermanos y los encontró en Dotán.
18 And, when they had seen him from afar, before he approached them, they decided to kill him.	18 Ellos le vieron de lejos, y antes que se les acercara, conspiraron contra él para matarle,
19 And they said one to another: “Behold, the dreamer approaches.	19 y se decían mutuamente: «Por ahí viene el soñador.
20 Come, let us kill him and cast him into the old cistern. And let us say: ‘an evil wild beast has devoured him.’ And then it will become apparent what his dreams will do for him.”	20 Ahora, pues, venid, matémosle y echémosle en un pozo cualquiera, y diremos que algún animal feroz le devoró. Veremos entonces en qué paran sus sueños.»
21 But Reuben, on hearing this, strove to free him from their hands, and he said:	21 Rubén lo oyó y le libró de sus manos. Dijo: «No atentemos contra su vida.»
22 “Do not take away his life, nor shed blood. But throw him into this cistern, which is in the wilderness, and so keep your hands harmless.” But he said this, wanting to rescue him from their hands, so as to return him to his father.	22 Rubén les dijo: «No derraméis sangre. Echadle a ese pozo que hay en el páramo, pero no pongáis la mano sobre él.» Su intención era de salvarle de sus hermanos para devolverle a su padre.
23 And so, as soon as he came to his brothers, they very quickly stripped him of his tunic, which was ankle-length and woven of many colors,	23 Y ocurrió, que cuando llegó José donde sus hermanos, éstos despojaron a José de su túnica - aquella túnica de manga larga que llevaba puesta -,
24 and they cast him into an old cistern, which held no water.	24 y echándole mano le arrojaron al pozo. Aquel pozo estaba vacío, sin agua.
25 And sitting down to eat bread, they saw some Ishmaelites, travelers coming from Gilead, with their camels, carrying spices, and resin, and oil of myrrh into Egypt.	25 Luego se sentaron a comer. Y levantando los ojos divisaron una caravana de ismaelitas que venían de Galaad, con camellos cargados de almáciga, sandáraca y ládano, que iban bajando hacia Egipto.
26 Therefore, Judah said to his brothers: “What will it profit us, if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?	26 Entonces dijo Judá a sus hermanos: «¿Qué aprovecha el que asesinemos a nuestro hermano y luego tapemos su sangre?
27 It is better that he be sold to the Ishmaelites, and then our hands will not be defiled. For he is our brother and our flesh.” His brothers agreed to his words.	27 Venid vamos a venderle a los ismaelitas, pero no pongamos la mano en él, porque es nuestro hermano, carne nuestra.» Y sus hermanos asintieron.
28 And when the Midianite merchants were passing by, they drew him from the cistern, and they sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. And these led him into Egypt.	28 Pasaron unos madianitas mercaderes, y descubriéndole subieron a José del pozo. Vendieron a José a los ismaelitas por veinte piezas de plata, y éstos se llevaron a José a Egipto.
29 And Reuben, returning to the cistern, did not find the boy.	29 Vuelve Rubén al pozo, y he aquí que José nos estaba en el pozo. El desgarró sus ropas,
30 And rending his garments, he went to his brothers and said, “The boy is not present, and so where shall I go?”	30 y volviendo donde sus hermanos les dijo: «El niño no aparece, y yo ¿qué hago ahora?»
31 Then they took his tunic, and they dipped it in the blood of a young goat, which they had killed,	31 Entonces tomaron la túnica de José, y degollando un cabrito, tiñeron la túnica en sangre,
32 sending those who carried it to their father, and they said: “We found this. See whether it is the tunic of your son or not.”	32 y enviaron la túnica de manga larga, haciéndola llegar hasta su padre con este recado: «Esto hemos encontrado: examina si se trata de la túnica de tu hijo, o no.»
33 And when the father acknowledged it, he said: “It is the tunic of my son. An evil wild beast has eaten him; a beast has devoured Joseph.”	33 El la examinó y dijo: «¡Es la túnica de mi hijo! ¡Algún animal feroz le ha devorado! ¡José ha sido despedazado!»
34 And tearing his garments, he was clothed in haircloth, mourning his son for a long time.	34 Jacob desgarró su vestido, se echó un sayal a la cintura e hizo duelo por su hijo durante muchos días.
35 Then, when all of his sons gathered together to ease their father’s sorrow, he was not willing to accept consolation, but he said: “I will descend in mourning to my son in the underworld.” And while he persevered in weeping,	35 Todos sus hijos e hijas acudieron a consolarle, pero él rehusaba consolarse y decía: «Voy a bajar en duelo al seol donde mi hijo.» Y su padre le lloraba.
36 the Midianites in Egypt sold Joseph to Potiphar, a eunuch of Pharaoh, instructor of the soldiers.	36 Por su parte, los madianitas, llegados a Egipto, le vendieron a Putifar, eunuco de Faraón y capitán de los guardias.
