1 Now Jacob lived in the land of Canaan, where his father sojourned.	1 Giacobbe si stabilì nella terra dove suo padre era stato forestiero, nella terra di Canaan.
2 And these are his generations. Joseph, when he was sixteen years old, was pasturing the flock with his brothers, when he was still a boy. And he was with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, the wives of his father. And he accused his brothers to their father of a most sinful crime.	2 Questa è la discendenza di Giacobbe. Giuseppe all’età di diciassette anni pascolava il gregge con i suoi fratelli. Essendo ancora giovane, stava con i figli di Bila e i figli di Zilpa, mogli di suo padre. Ora Giuseppe riferì al padre di chiacchiere maligne su di loro.
3 Now Israel loved Joseph above all his sons, because he had conceived him in his old age. And he made him a tunic, woven of many colors.	3 Israele amava Giuseppe più di tutti i suoi figli, perché era il figlio avuto in vecchiaia, e gli aveva fatto una tunica con maniche lunghe.
4 Then his brothers, seeing that he was loved by his father more than all his other sons, hated him, and they were not able to say anything peacefully to him.	4 I suoi fratelli, vedendo che il loro padre amava lui più di tutti i suoi figli, lo odiavano e non riuscivano a parlargli amichevolmente.
5 Then it also happened that he recounted the vision of a dream to his brothers, for which reason a greater hatred began to be nurtured.	5 Ora Giuseppe fece un sogno e lo raccontò ai fratelli, che lo odiarono ancora di più.
6 And he said to them, “Listen to my dream that I saw.	6 Disse dunque loro: «Ascoltate il sogno che ho fatto.
7 I thought we were binding sheaves in the field. And my sheaf seemed to rise up and stand, and your sheaves, standing in a circle, reverenced my sheaf.”	7 Noi stavamo legando covoni in mezzo alla campagna, quand’ecco il mio covone si alzò e restò diritto e i vostri covoni si posero attorno e si prostrarono davanti al mio».
8 His brothers responded: “Would you be our king? Or will we be subject to your dominion?” Therefore, this matter of his dreams and words provided kindling to their envy and hatred.	8 Gli dissero i suoi fratelli: «Vuoi forse regnare su di noi o ci vuoi dominare?». Lo odiarono ancora di più a causa dei suoi sogni e delle sue parole.
9 Likewise, he saw another dream, which he explained to his brothers, saying, “I saw by a dream, as if the sun, and the moon, and eleven stars were reverencing me.”	9 Egli fece ancora un altro sogno e lo narrò ai fratelli e disse: «Ho fatto ancora un sogno, sentite: il sole, la luna e undici stelle si prostravano davanti a me».
10 And when he had related this to his father and brothers, his father rebuked him, and he said: “What does it mean to you, this dream that you have seen? Should I, and your mother, and your brothers reverence you upon the earth?”	10 Lo narrò dunque al padre e ai fratelli. Ma il padre lo rimproverò e gli disse: «Che sogno è questo che hai fatto! Dovremo forse venire io, tua madre e i tuoi fratelli a prostrarci fino a terra davanti a te?».
11 Therefore, his brothers were envious of him. Yet truly, his father considered the matter silently.	11 I suoi fratelli perciò divennero invidiosi di lui, mentre il padre tenne per sé la cosa.
12 And while his brothers were lodging at Shechem, pasturing their father’s flocks,	12 I suoi fratelli erano andati a pascolare il gregge del loro padre a Sichem.
13 Israel said to him: “Your brothers are pasturing the sheep at Shechem. Come, I will send you to them.” And when he answered,	13 Israele disse a Giuseppe: «Sai che i tuoi fratelli sono al pascolo a Sichem? Vieni, ti voglio mandare da loro». Gli rispose: «Eccomi!».
14 “I am ready,” he said to him, “Go, and see if everything is prospering with your brothers and the cattle, and report to me what is happening.” So, having been sent from the valley of Hebron, he arrived at Shechem.	14 Gli disse: «Va’ a vedere come stanno i tuoi fratelli e come sta il bestiame, poi torna a darmi notizie». Lo fece dunque partire dalla valle di Ebron ed egli arrivò a Sichem.
15 And a man found him wandering in a field, and he asked him what he was seeking.	15 Mentre egli si aggirava per la campagna, lo trovò un uomo, che gli domandò: «Che cosa cerchi?».
16 So he responded: “I seek my brothers. Tell me where they pasture the flocks.”	16 Rispose: «Sono in cerca dei miei fratelli. Indicami dove si trovano a pascolare».
17 And the man said to him: “They have withdrawn from this place. But I heard them saying, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’ ” Therefore, Joseph continued on after his brothers, and he found them at Dothan.	17 Quell’uomo disse: «Hanno tolto le tende di qui; li ho sentiti dire: “Andiamo a Dotan!”». Allora Giuseppe ripartì in cerca dei suoi fratelli e li trovò a Dotan.
18 And, when they had seen him from afar, before he approached them, they decided to kill him.	18 Essi lo videro da lontano e, prima che giungesse vicino a loro, complottarono contro di lui per farlo morire.
19 And they said one to another: “Behold, the dreamer approaches.	19 Si dissero l’un l’altro: «Eccolo! È arrivato il signore dei sogni!
20 Come, let us kill him and cast him into the old cistern. And let us say: ‘an evil wild beast has devoured him.’ And then it will become apparent what his dreams will do for him.”	20 Orsù, uccidiamolo e gettiamolo in una cisterna! Poi diremo: “Una bestia feroce l’ha divorato!”. Così vedremo che ne sarà dei suoi sogni!».
21 But Reuben, on hearing this, strove to free him from their hands, and he said:	21 Ma Ruben sentì e, volendo salvarlo dalle loro mani, disse: «Non togliamogli la vita».
22 “Do not take away his life, nor shed blood. But throw him into this cistern, which is in the wilderness, and so keep your hands harmless.” But he said this, wanting to rescue him from their hands, so as to return him to his father.	22 Poi disse loro: «Non spargete il sangue, gettatelo in questa cisterna che è nel deserto, ma non colpitelo con la vostra mano»: egli intendeva salvarlo dalle loro mani e ricondurlo a suo padre.
23 And so, as soon as he came to his brothers, they very quickly stripped him of his tunic, which was ankle-length and woven of many colors,	23 Quando Giuseppe fu arrivato presso i suoi fratelli, essi lo spogliarono della sua tunica, quella tunica con le maniche lunghe che egli indossava,
24 and they cast him into an old cistern, which held no water.	24 lo afferrarono e lo gettarono nella cisterna: era una cisterna vuota, senz’acqua.
25 And sitting down to eat bread, they saw some Ishmaelites, travelers coming from Gilead, with their camels, carrying spices, and resin, and oil of myrrh into Egypt.	25 Poi sedettero per prendere cibo. Quand’ecco, alzando gli occhi, videro arrivare una carovana di Ismaeliti provenienti da Gàlaad, con i cammelli carichi di resina, balsamo e làudano, che andavano a portare in Egitto.
26 Therefore, Judah said to his brothers: “What will it profit us, if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?	26 Allora Giuda disse ai fratelli: «Che guadagno c’è a uccidere il nostro fratello e a coprire il suo sangue?
27 It is better that he be sold to the Ishmaelites, and then our hands will not be defiled. For he is our brother and our flesh.” His brothers agreed to his words.	27 Su, vendiamolo agli Ismaeliti e la nostra mano non sia contro di lui, perché è nostro fratello e nostra carne». I suoi fratelli gli diedero ascolto.
28 And when the Midianite merchants were passing by, they drew him from the cistern, and they sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. And these led him into Egypt.	28 Passarono alcuni mercanti madianiti; essi tirarono su ed estrassero Giuseppe dalla cisterna e per venti sicli d’argento vendettero Giuseppe agli Ismaeliti. Così Giuseppe fu condotto in Egitto.
29 And Reuben, returning to the cistern, did not find the boy.	29 Quando Ruben tornò alla cisterna, ecco, Giuseppe non c’era più. Allora si stracciò le vesti,
30 And rending his garments, he went to his brothers and said, “The boy is not present, and so where shall I go?”	30 tornò dai suoi fratelli e disse: «Il ragazzo non c’è più; e io, dove andrò?».
31 Then they took his tunic, and they dipped it in the blood of a young goat, which they had killed,	31 Allora presero la tunica di Giuseppe, sgozzarono un capro e intinsero la tunica nel sangue.
32 sending those who carried it to their father, and they said: “We found this. See whether it is the tunic of your son or not.”	32 Poi mandarono al padre la tunica con le maniche lunghe e gliela fecero pervenire con queste parole: «Abbiamo trovato questa; per favore, verifica se è la tunica di tuo figlio o no».
33 And when the father acknowledged it, he said: “It is the tunic of my son. An evil wild beast has eaten him; a beast has devoured Joseph.”	33 Egli la riconobbe e disse: «È la tunica di mio figlio! Una bestia feroce l’ha divorato. Giuseppe è stato sbranato».
34 And tearing his garments, he was clothed in haircloth, mourning his son for a long time.	34 Giacobbe si stracciò le vesti, si pose una tela di sacco attorno ai fianchi e fece lutto sul suo figlio per molti giorni.
35 Then, when all of his sons gathered together to ease their father’s sorrow, he was not willing to accept consolation, but he said: “I will descend in mourning to my son in the underworld.” And while he persevered in weeping,	35 Tutti i figli e le figlie vennero a consolarlo, ma egli non volle essere consolato dicendo: «No, io scenderò in lutto da mio figlio negli inferi». E il padre suo lo pianse.
36 the Midianites in Egypt sold Joseph to Potiphar, a eunuch of Pharaoh, instructor of the soldiers.	36 Intanto i Madianiti lo vendettero in Egitto a Potifàr, eunuco del faraone e comandante delle guardie.
