Now Jacob lived in the land of Canaan, where his father sojourned.1 Mais Jacob demeura dans le pays où son père avait séjourné, dans le pays de Canaan.
And these are his generations. Joseph, when he was sixteen years old, was pasturing the flock with his brothers, when he was still a boy. And he was with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, the wives of his father. And he accused his brothers to their father of a most sinful crime.2 Voici l'histoire de Jacob. Joseph avait dix-sept ans.
Now Israel loved Joseph above all his sons, because he had conceived him in his old age. And he made him a tunic, woven of many colors.3 Israël aimait Joseph plus que tous ses autres enfants, car il était le fils de sa vieillesse, et il lui fitfaire une tunique ornée.
Then his brothers, seeing that he was loved by his father more than all his other sons, hated him, and they were not able to say anything peacefully to him.4 Ses frères virent que son père l'aimait plus que tous ses autres fils et ils le prirent en haine, devenusincapables de lui parler amicalement.
Then it also happened that he recounted the vision of a dream to his brothers, for which reason a greater hatred began to be nurtured.5 Or Joseph eut un songe et il en fit part à ses frères qui le haïrent encore plus.
And he said to them, “Listen to my dream that I saw.6 Il leur dit: "Ecoutez le rêve que j'ai fait:
I thought we were binding sheaves in the field. And my sheaf seemed to rise up and stand, and your sheaves, standing in a circle, reverenced my sheaf.”7 il me paraissait que nous étions à lier des gerbes dans les champs, et voici que ma gerbe se dressaet qu'elle se tintdebout, et vos gerbes l'entourèrent et elles se prosternèrent devant ma gerbe."
His brothers responded: “Would you be our king? Or will we be subject to your dominion?” Therefore, this matter of his dreams and words provided kindling to their envy and hatred.8 Ses frères lui répondirent: "Voudrais-tu donc régner sur nous en roi ou bien dominer en maître?"
Likewise, he saw another dream, which he explained to his brothers, saying, “I saw by a dream, as if the sun, and the moon, and eleven stars were reverencing me.”9 Il eut encore un autre songe, qu'il raconta à ses frères.
And when he had related this to his father and brothers, his father rebuked him, and he said: “What does it mean to you, this dream that you have seen? Should I, and your mother, and your brothers reverence you upon the earth?”10 Il raconta cela à son père et à ses frères, mais son père le gronda et lui dit: "En voilà un rêve quetu as fait!Allons-nous donc, moi, ta mère et tes frères, venir nous prosterner à terre devant toi?"
Therefore, his brothers were envious of him. Yet truly, his father considered the matter silently.11 Ses frères furent jaloux de lui, mais son père gardait la chose dans sa mémoire.
And while his brothers were lodging at Shechem, pasturing their father’s flocks,12 Ses frères allèrent paître le petit bétail de leur père à Sichem.
Israel said to him: “Your brothers are pasturing the sheep at Shechem. Come, I will send you to them.” And when he answered,13 Israël dit à Joseph: "Tes frères ne sont-ils pas au pâturage à Sichem? Viens, je vais t'envoyer verseux" et il répondit: "Je suis prêt."
“I am ready,” he said to him, “Go, and see if everything is prospering with your brothers and the cattle, and report to me what is happening.” So, having been sent from the valley of Hebron, he arrived at Shechem.14 Il lui dit: "Va donc voir comment se portent tes frères et le bétail, et rapporte-moi des nouvelles."Il l'envoya de la vallée d'Hébron et Joseph arriva à Sichem.
And a man found him wandering in a field, and he asked him what he was seeking.15 Un homme le rencontra errant dans la campagne et cet homme lui demanda: "Que cherches-tu?"
So he responded: “I seek my brothers. Tell me where they pasture the flocks.”16 Il répondit: "Je cherche mes frères. Indique-moi, je te prie, où ils paissent leurs troupeaux."
And the man said to him: “They have withdrawn from this place. But I heard them saying, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’ ” Therefore, Joseph continued on after his brothers, and he found them at Dothan.17 L'homme dit: "Ils ont décampé d'ici, je les ai entendus quidisaient: Allons à Dotân"; Joseph partiten quête de ses frères et il les trouva à Dotân.
And, when they had seen him from afar, before he approached them, they decided to kill him.18 Ils l'aperçurent de loin et, avant qu'il n'arrivât près d'eux, ils complotèrent de le faire mourir.
And they said one to another: “Behold, the dreamer approaches.19 Ils se dirent entre eux: "Voilà l'homme aux songes qui arrive!
Come, let us kill him and cast him into the old cistern. And let us say: ‘an evil wild beast has devoured him.’ And then it will become apparent what his dreams will do for him.”20 Maintenant, venez, tuons-le et jetons-le dans n'importe quelle citerne; nous dirons qu'une bêteféroce l'a dévoré.
But Reuben, on hearing this, strove to free him from their hands, and he said:21 Mais Ruben entendit et il le sauva de leurs mains.
“Do not take away his life, nor shed blood. But throw him into this cistern, which is in the wilderness, and so keep your hands harmless.” But he said this, wanting to rescue him from their hands, so as to return him to his father.22 Ruben leur dit: "Ne répandez pas le sang! Jetez-le dans cette citerne du désert, mais ne portez pasla main sur lui!"C'était pour le sauver de leurs mains et le ramener à son père.
And so, as soon as he came to his brothers, they very quickly stripped him of his tunic, which was ankle-length and woven of many colors,23 Donc, lorsque Joseph arriva près de ses frères, ils le dépouillèrent de sa tunique, la tunique ornéequ'il portait.
and they cast him into an old cistern, which held no water.24 Ils se saisirent de lui et le jetèrent dans la citerne; c'était une citerne vide, où il n'y avait pas d'eau.
And sitting down to eat bread, they saw some Ishmaelites, travelers coming from Gilead, with their camels, carrying spices, and resin, and oil of myrrh into Egypt.25 Puis ils s'assirent pour manger.
Therefore, Judah said to his brothers: “What will it profit us, if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?26 Alors Juda dit à ses frères: "Quel profit y aurait-il à tuer notre frère et couvrir son sang?
It is better that he be sold to the Ishmaelites, and then our hands will not be defiled. For he is our brother and our flesh.” His brothers agreed to his words.27 Venez, vendons-le aux Ismaélites, mais ne portons pas la main sur lui: il est notre frère, de lamême chair que nous." Et ses frères l'écoutèrent.
And when the Midianite merchants were passing by, they drew him from the cistern, and they sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. And these led him into Egypt.28 Or des gens passèrent, des marchands madianites, et ils retirèrent Joseph de la citerne.
And Reuben, returning to the cistern, did not find the boy.29 Lorsque Ruben retourna à la citerne, voilà que Joseph n'y était plus! Il déchira ses vêtements
And rending his garments, he went to his brothers and said, “The boy is not present, and so where shall I go?”30 et, revenant vers ses frères, il dit: "L'enfant n'est plus là! Et moi, où vais-je aller?"
Then they took his tunic, and they dipped it in the blood of a young goat, which they had killed,31 Ils prirent la tunique de Joseph et, ayant égorgé un bouc, ils trempèrent la tunique dans le sang.
sending those who carried it to their father, and they said: “We found this. See whether it is the tunic of your son or not.”32 Ils envoyèrent la tunique ornée, ils la firent porter à leur père avec ces mots: "Voilà ce que nousavons trouvé! Regarde si ce ne serait pas la tunique de ton fils."
And when the father acknowledged it, he said: “It is the tunic of my son. An evil wild beast has eaten him; a beast has devoured Joseph.”33 Celui-ci regarda et dit: "C'est la tunique de mon fils! Une bête féroce l'a dévoré. Joseph a été misen pièces!"
And tearing his garments, he was clothed in haircloth, mourning his son for a long time.34 Jacob déchira son vêtement, il mit un sac sur ses reins et fit le deuil de son fils pendant longtemps.
Then, when all of his sons gathered together to ease their father’s sorrow, he was not willing to accept consolation, but he said: “I will descend in mourning to my son in the underworld.” And while he persevered in weeping,35 Tous ses fils et ses filles vinrent pour le consoler, mais il refusa toute consolation et dit: "Non,c'est en deuil que je veux descendre au shéol auprès de mon fils." Et son père le pleura.
the Midianites in Egypt sold Joseph to Potiphar, a eunuch of Pharaoh, instructor of the soldiers.36 Cependant, les Madianites l'avaient vendu en Egypte à Potiphar, eunuque de Pharaon etcommandant des gardes.
