1 Hierauf nahm Jesus seinen Weg durch Galiläa, denn er wollte nicht in Judäa umherwandern, da die Juden ihn zu töten suchten.	1 After this Jesus went about in Galilee; he would not go about in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him.
2 Laubhütten aber, das Fest der Juden, war nahe.	2 Now the Jews' feast of Tabernacles was at hand.
3 Da sagten zu ihm seine Brüder: "Zieh fort von hier und mach dich auf nach Judäa, damit auch deine Jünger deine Werke sehen, die du vollbringst.	3 So his brothers said to him, "Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples may see the works you are doing.
4 Denn niemand tut etwas im Verborgenen und will dabei in der Öffentlichkeit Geltung haben. Wenn du solche Dinge tust, so zeige dich offen vor der Welt!"	4 For no man works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world."
5 Auch seine Brüder nämlich glaubten nicht an ihn.	5 For even his brothers did not believe in him.
6 Da sprach Jesus zu ihnen: "Meine Zeit ist noch nicht da; eure Zeit jedoch ist immer gelegen.	6 Jesus said to them, "My time has not yet come, but your time is always here.
7 Euch kann die Welt nicht hassen, mich aber haßt sie, weil ich über sie das Zeugnis gebe, daß ihre Werke schlecht sind.	7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify of it that its works are evil.
8 Geht ihr hinauf zum Fest; ich gehe noch nicht hinauf zu diesem Fest, denn meine Zeit ist noch nicht erfüllt."	8 Go to the feast yourselves; I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come."
9 Dies sagte er zu ihnen und blieb in Galiläa.	9 So saying, he remained in Galilee.
10 Nachdem aber seine Brüder zum Fest hinaufgezogen waren, ging auch er hinauf, nicht öffentlich, sondern so, daß es niemand merkte.	10 But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private.
11 Die Juden suchten beim Feste nach ihm und sagten: "Wo ist er denn?"	11 The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and saying, "Where is he?"
12 Und es war viel des Redens über ihn unter dem Volke. Die einen sagten: "Er ist gut"; andere sagten: "Nein, er verführt das Volk."	12 And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, "He is a good man," others said, "No, he is leading the people astray."
13 Niemand aber redete offen von ihm, aus Furcht vor den Juden.	13 Yet for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him.
14 Es war schon in der Mitte der Festwoche, als Jesus in den Tempel hinaufging und lehrte.	14 About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and taught.
15 Da staunten die Juden und sagten: "Wie kennt der die Schriften, ohne Unterricht genommen zu haben?"	15 The Jews marveled at it, saying, "How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?"
16 Jesus erwiderte ihnen und sprach: "Meine Lehre ist nicht meine, sondern sie ist von dem, der mich gesandt hat.	16 So Jesus answered them, "My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me;
17 Wenn jemand bestrebt ist, seinen Willen zu tun, wird er erkennen, ob die Lehre von Gott ist oder ob ich aus mir selbst rede.	17 if any man's will is to do his will, he shall know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority.
18 Wer aus sich selbst redet, der sucht seine eigene Ehre; wer aber die Ehre dessen sucht, der ihn gesandt hat, der ist wahr, und kein Trug ist in ihm.	18 He who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but he who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood.
19 Hat euch nicht Moses das Gesetz gegeben? Keiner aber von euch hält sich an das Gesetz.	19 Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?"
20 Warum sucht ihr mich zu töten?" Das Volk erwiderte: "Du hast einen Dämon! Wer sucht denn dich zu töten?"	20 The people answered, "You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?"
21 Jesus antwortete ihnen: "Ein einziges Werk habe ich getan, und ihr alle seid befremdet darüber.	21 Jesus answered them, "I did one deed, and you all marvel at it.
22 Moses hat euch die Beschneidung gegeben - nicht als von Moses stammend, sondern von den Vätern -, und ihr beschneidet auch am Sabbat einen Menschen.	22 Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man upon the sabbath.
23 Wenn nun ein Mensch am Sabbat die Beschneidung empfängt, ohne daß das Gesetz des Moses verletzt wird, da zürnt ihr mir, weil ich am Sabbat einen ganzen Menschen gesund gemacht habe?	23 If on the sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the sabbath I made a man's whole body well?
24 Urteilt nicht nach dem Äußeren, sondern nach Gerechtigkeit fällt euer Urteil!"	24 Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment."
25 Da sagten einige aus Jerusalem: "Ist das nicht der, den sie zu töten suchen?	25 Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, "Is not this the man whom they seek to kill?
26 Seht, er redet in aller Öffentlichkeit, und man entgegnet ihm nichts. Haben vielleicht die Ratsherren es als wahr erkannt, daß dieser der Messias ist?	26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ?
27 Doch von diesem wissen wir, woher er ist; vom Messias aber, wenn er kommt, weiß niemand, woher er ist."	27 Yet we know where this man comes from; and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from."
28 Da rief Jesus, der im Tempel lehrte: "Ja, ihr kennt mich und ihr wißt, woher ich bin; doch ich bin nicht von mir selbst gekommen, sondern der Wahrhafte ist es, der mich gesandt hat, er, den ihr nicht kennt.	28 So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, "You know me, and you know where I come from? But I have not come of my own accord; he who sent me is true, and him you do not know.
29 Ich kenne ihn, denn ich komme von ihm her, und er hat mich gesandt."	29 I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me."
30 Da suchten sie ihn zu ergreifen, doch niemand legte Hand an ihn, denn seine Stunde war noch nicht gekommen.	30 So they sought to arrest him; but no one laid hands on him, because his hour had not yet come.
31 Viele aus dem Volke glaubten an ihn und sagten: "Wird denn der Messias, wenn er kommt, mehr Zeichen tun, als dieser tat?"	31 Yet many of the people believed in him; they said, "When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?"
32 Die Pharisäer hörten, daß im Volke solche Reden umgingen, und die Hohenpriester und Pharisäer sandten Leute aus, um ihn festzunehmen.	32 The Pharisees heard the crowd thus muttering about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him.
33 Jesus aber sprach: "Noch kurze Zeit bin ich bei euch; dann gehe ich zu dem, der mich gesandt hat.	33 Jesus then said, "I shall be with you a little longer, and then I go to him who sent me;
34 Ihr werdet mich suchen, jedoch nicht finden, und wo ich bin, dahin könnt ihr nicht kommen."	34 you will seek me and you will not find me; where I am you cannot come."
35 Da sagten die Juden zueinander: "Wohin will er denn gehen, daß wir ihn nicht finden sollen? Will er etwa in die Diaspora der Hellenen gehen, um die Hellenen zu lehren?	35 The Jews said to one another, "Where does this man intend to go that we shall not find him? Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?
36 Was bedeutet das Wort, das er sprach: Ihr werdet mich suchen, aber nicht finden, und wo ich bin, dahin könnt ihr nicht kommen?"	36 What does he mean by saying, 'You will seek me and you will not find me,' and, 'Where I am you cannot come'?"
37 Am letzten Tag, dem großen des Festes, stand Jesus da und rief: "Wenn jemand dürstet, komme er zu mir und trinke!	37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and proclaimed, "If any one thirst, let him come to me and drink.
38 Wer an mich glaubt, aus dessen Leib werden, wie die Schrift gesagt hat, Ströme lebendigen Wassers fließen."	38 He who believes in me, as the scripture has said, 'Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water.'"
39 Das sagte er im Hinblick auf den Geist, den die empfangen sollten, die an ihn glaubten; denn noch war der [Heilige] Geist nicht da, weil Jesus noch nicht verherrlicht war.	39 Now this he said about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were to receive; for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
40 Von den Volksscharen, die diese Worte hörten, sagten die einen: "Dieser ist wahrlich der Prophet!"	40 When they heard these words, some of the people said, "This is really the prophet."
41 Andere sagten: "Dieser ist der Messias." Wieder andere: "Soll denn aus Galiläa der Messias kommen?	41 Others said, "This is the Christ." But some said, "Is the Christ to come from Galilee?
42 Hat die Schrift nicht gesagt, daß aus dem Geschlechte Davids und aus dem Dorfe Bethlehem, wo David war, der Messias komme?"	42 Has not the scripture said that the Christ is descended from David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?"
43 Und es entstand ein Zwiespalt im Volke um seinetwillen.	43 So there was a division among the people over him.
44 Einige von ihnen wollten ihn festnehmen; doch niemand legte Hand an ihn.	44 Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.
45 Als nun die Diener zu den Hohenpriestern und Pharisäern kamen, sagten diese zu ihnen: "Warum habt ihr ihn nicht gebracht?"	45 The officers then went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why did you not bring him?"
46 Die Diener antworteten: "Noch niemals hat ein Mensch so geredet, wie dieser Mensch redet."	46 The officers answered, "No man ever spoke like this man!"
47 Da entgegneten ihnen die Pharisäer: "Seid etwa auch ihr aus Galiläa?	47 The Pharisees answered them, "Are you led astray, you also?
48 Glaubt denn jemand von den Ratsherren an ihn oder von den Pharisäern?	48 Have any of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him?
49 Dieses Volk aber, das vom Gesetz nichts versteht - verflucht sind sie."	49 But this crowd, who do not know the law, are accursed."
50 Da sagte Nikodemus zu ihnen - es war jener, der schon früher einmal zu ihm kam -, einer von ihnen:	50 Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them,
51 "Richtet denn unser Gesetz einen Menschen, wenn es ihn nicht zuvor verhört und festgestellt hat, was er tut?"	51 "Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?"
52 Sie erwiderten ihm: "Bist etwa auch du aus Galiläa? Forsche nach, und du wirst sehen, daß aus Galiläa kein Prophet aufsteht."	52 They replied, "Are you from Galilee too? Search and you will see that no prophet is to rise from Galilee."
53 Und sie gingen von dannen, ein jeder an seinen Ort.	53 They went each to his own house.
