Sirach 38

NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 Treat the doctor with the honour that is his due, in consideration of his services; for he too has beencreated by the Lord.	1 Honra o médico por causa da necessidade, pois foi o Altíssimo quem o criou.
2 Healing itself comes from the Most High, like a gift received from a king.	2 (Toda a medicina provém de Deus), e ele recebe presentes do rei:
3 The doctor's learning keeps his head high, and the great regard him with awe.	3 a ciência do médico o eleva em honra; ele é admirado na presença dos grandes.
4 The Lord has brought forth medicinal herbs from the ground, and no one sensible wil despise them.	4 O Senhor fez a terra produzir os medicamentos: o homem sensato não os despreza.
5 Did not a piece of wood once sweeten the water, thus giving proof of its power?	5 Uma espécie de madeira não adoçou o amargor da água? Essa virtude chegou ao conhecimento dos homens.
6 He has also given some people knowledge, so that they may draw credit from his mighty works.	6 O Altíssimo deu-lhes a ciência da medicina para ser honrado em suas maravilhas;
7 He uses these for healing and relieving pain; the druggist makes up a mixture from them.	7 e dela se serve para acalmar as dores e curá-las; o farmacêutico faz misturas agradáveis, compõe ungüentos úteis à saúde, e seu trabalho não terminará,
8 Thus, there is no end to his activities; thanks to him, well-being exists throughout the world.	8 até que a paz divina se estenda sobre a face da terra.
9 My child, when you are il , do not rebel, but pray to the Lord and he wil heal you.	9 Meu filho, se estiveres doente não te descuides de ti, mas ora ao Senhor, que te curará.
10 Renounce your faults, keep your hands unsoiled, and cleanse your heart from al sin.	10 Afasta-te do pecado, reergue as mãos e purifica teu coração de todo o pecado.
11 Offer incense and a memorial of fine flour, make as rich an offering as you can afford.	11 Oferece um incenso suave e uma lembrança de flor de farinha; faze a oblação de uma vítima gorda.
12 Then let the doctor take over -- the Lord created him too -- do not let him leave you, for you need him.	12 Em seguida dá lugar ao médico, pois ele foi criado por Deus; que ele não te deixe, pois sua arte te é necessária.
13 There are times when good health depends on doctors.	13 Virá um tempo em que cairás nas mãos deles.
14 For they, in their turn, wil pray the Lord to grant them the grace to relieve and to heal, and so prolongyour life.	14 E eles mesmos rogarão ao Senhor que mande por meio deles o alívio e a saúde (ao doente) segundo a finalidade de sua vida.
15 Whoever sins in the eyes of his Maker, let such a one come under the care of the doctor!	15 Aquele que peca na presença daquele que o fez, cairá nas mãos do médico.
16 My child, shed tears over the dead, lament for the dead to show your sorrow, then bury the body withdue ceremony and do not fail to honour the grave.	16 Meu filho, derrama lágrimas sobre um morto, e chora como um homem que sofreu cruelmente. Sepulta o seu corpo segundo o costume, e não descuides de sua sepultura.
17 Weep bitterly, beat your breast, observe the mourning the dead deserves for a day or two, to avoidcensorious comment, and then be comforted in your sorrow;	17 Chora-o amargamente durante um dia, por causa da opinião pública, e depois consola-te de tua tristeza; 18. toma luto segundo o merecimento da pessoa, um dia ou dois, para evitar as más palavras.
18 for grief can lead to death, a grief-stricken heart loses al energy.
19 In affliction sorrow persists, a life of grief is hard to bear.	19 Pois a tristeza apressa a morte, tira o vigor, e o desgosto do coração faz inclinar a cabeça.
20 Do not abandon your heart to grief, drive it away, bear your own end in mind.	20 A tristeza permanece quando (o corpo) é levado; e a vida do pobre é o espelho de seu coração.
21 Do not forget, there is no coming back; you cannot help the dead, and you will harm yourself.	21 Não entregues teu coração à tristeza, mas afasta-a e lembra-te do teu fim.
22 'Remember my doom, since it will be yours too; I yesterday, you today!'	22 Não te esqueças dele, porque não há retorno; de nada lhe servirás e só causarás dano a ti mesmo.
23 Once the dead are laid to rest, let their memory rest, do not fret for them, once their spirit departs.	23 Lembra-te da sentença que me foi dada: a tua será igual; ontem para mim, hoje para ti.
24 Leisure gives the scribe the chance to acquire wisdom; a man with few commitments can grow wise.	24 Na paz em que o morto entrou, deixa repousar a sua memória, e conforta-o no momento em que exalar o último suspiro.
25 How can the ploughman become wise, whose sole ambition is to wield the goad, driving his oxen,engrossed in their work, his conversation limited to bul ocks,	25 A sabedoria do escriba lhe vem no tempo do lazer. Aquele que pouco se agita adquirirá sabedoria.
26 his thoughts absorbed in the furrows he traces and his long evenings spent in fattening heifers?	26 Que sabedoria poderia ter o homem que conduz a charrua, que faz ponto de honra aguilhoar os bois, que participa de seu labor, e só sabe falar das crias dos touros?
27 Similarly with al workmen and craftsmen, toiling day and night; those who engrave seals, for evertrying to think of a new design, concentrating on catching a good likeness and staying up late to get the workdone.	27 Ele põe todo o seu coração em traçar sulcos, e o seu cuidado é engordar novilhas.
28 Similarly with the blacksmith sitting by his anvil; he considers what to do with the pig-iron, the breath ofthe fire scorches his skin, as he contends with the heat of the furnace; the noise of the hammer deafens him, hiseyes are fixed on the pattern; he concentrates on getting the job done wel and stays up late to apply thefinishing touches.	28 Igualmente acontece com todo carpinteiro, todo arquiteto, que passa no trabalho os dias e as noites. Assim sucede àquele que grava as marcas dos sinetes, variando as figuras por um trabalho assíduo; que aplica todo o seu coração na imitação da pintura, e põe todo o cuidado no acabamento de seu trabalho.
29 Similarly with the potter, sitting at his work, turning the wheel with his feet; constantly on the alert overhis work, each flick of the finger premeditated;	29 Assim acontece com o ferreiro sentado perto da bigorna, examinando o ferro que vai moldar; o vapor do fogo queima as suas carnes, e ele resiste ao ardor da fornalha.
30 he pummels the clay with his arm, and with his feet he kneads it; he concentrates on applying theglaze right and stays up late to clean the kiln.	30 O barulho do martelo lhe fere o ouvido de golpes repetidos; seus olhos estão fixos no modelo do objeto.
31 Al these people rely on their hands and each is skilled at his own craft.	31 Ele aplica o seu coração em aperfeiçoar a sua obra, e põe um cuidado vigilante em torná-la bela e perfeita.
32 A town could not be inhabited without them, there would be no settling, no travel ing.	32 O mesmo sucede com o oleiro que, entregue à sua tarefa, gira a roda com os pés, sempre cuidadoso pela sua obra; e todo o seu trabalho (visa a produzir) uma quantidade (determinada).
33 But you wil not find them in the parliament, they do not hold high rank in the assembly. They do not siton the judicial bench, and they do not meditate on the Law.	33 Com o seu braço dá forma ao barro, torna-o maleável com os pés,
34 They are not remarkable for their culture or judgement, nor are they found frequenting thephilosophers. They sustain the structure of the world, and their prayer is concerned with their trade.	34 aplica o seu coração em aperfeiçoar o verniz, e limpa o forno com muita diligência.
	35 Todos esses artistas esperam (tudo) de suas mãos; cada um deles é sábio em sua profissão.
	36 Sem eles nenhuma cidade seria construída,
	37 nem habitada, nem freqüentada; mas eles mesmos não terão parte na assembléia,
	38 não se sentarão nas cadeiras dos juízes, não entenderão as disposições judiciárias, não apregoarão nem a instrução nem o direito, nem serão encontrados a estudar as máximas.
