Job 22

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said:	1 Allora Elifaz di Teman prese la parola e disse:
2 Can a human being contribute anything to God, when even someone intel igent can benefit onlyhimself?	2 "Può forse un uomo essere utile a Dio, mentre il saggio giova solo a se stesso?
3 Does Shaddai derive any benefit from your uprightness, or profit from your blameless conduct?	3 Che interesse ha l'Onnipotente, che tu abbia ragione? O che cosa ci guadagna, se la tua condotta è perfetta?
4 Do you think he is punishing you for your piety and bringing you to justice for that?	4 E' forse a motivo della tua pietà che ti riprende e ti convoca in giudizio?
5 No, for your great wickedness, more likely, for your unlimited sins!	5 Non è piuttosto per la tua grande malvagità e per le tue innumerevoli colpe?
6 You have exacted unearned pledges from your brothers, stripped people naked of their clothes,	6 Senza motivo infatti prendevi i pegni dei tuoi fratelli e strappavi le vesti agli ignudi.
7 failed to give water to the thirsty and refused bread to the hungry;	7 Non davi da bere all'assetato e rifiutavi il pane all'affamato.
8 handed the land over to a strong man, for some favoured person to move in,	8 Ai prepotenti cedevi la terra, e vi si istallavano i tuoi favoriti.
9 sent widows away empty-handed and crushed the arms of orphans.	9 Le vedove le rimandavi a mani vuote e spezzavi le braccia degli orfani.
10 No wonder, then, if snares are al around you, and sudden terrors make you afraid;	10 Perciò ti circondano i lacci e sei turbato da un repentino spavento,
11 if light has turned to darkness, so that you cannot see, and you have been submerged in the flood.	11 oppure un'oscurità non ti fa vedere, e una piena d'acqua ti sommerge.
12 Does not God live high in the heavens, does he not see the zenith of the stars?	12 Non è forse Dio nell'alto dei cieli? Guarda il vertice delle stelle: come sono alte!
13 And because he is up there, you have said, 'What does God know? Can he judge through the darkcloud?	13 E tu dici: "Che cosa ne sa Dio? Può forse giudicare dietro le nubi?
14 The clouds, to him, are an impenetrable veil, as he goes his way on the rim of the heavens.'	14 Le nubi gli fanno velo e non vede, mentre cammina sulla volta dei cieli".
15 And wil you stil fol ow the ancient trail trodden by the wicked,	15 Vuoi tu seguire la via antica già battuta da uomini perversi,
16 those who were borne off before their time, whose foundations were swamped by a flood,	16 che furono spazzati via prima del tempo, quando un fiume travolse le loro fondamenta?
17 for having said to God, 'Go away! What can Shaddai do to us?'	17 Dicevano a Dio: "Allontànati da noi! Che cosa ci può fare l'Onnipotente?".
18 Yet he himself had filled their houses with good things, although excluded from the plans of thewicked!	18 Eppure egli aveva colmato di beni le loro case, ma essi lo escludevano dai loro piani perversi.
19 At such a spectacle, the upright rejoice, and the innocent deride them:	19 I giusti vedono ciò e si rallegrano, l'innocente si beffa di loro:
20 'See how our enemies have been destroyed! See how their wealth has perished in the flames!'	20 sì, certo, è stata annientata la loro fortuna, e il fuoco ne ha divorato gli avanzi!
21 Wel then! Make peace with him, be reconciled, and al your happiness will be restored to you.	21 Orsù, riconciliati con lui e fa' la pace; così riavrai la felicità.
22 Welcome the teaching from his lips, and keep his words close to your heart.	22 Accetta dalla sua bocca l'istruzione e imprimiti nel cuore le sue parole.
23 If you return, humbled, to Shaddai and drive wickedness far from your tent,	23 Se ritorni all'Onnipotente, sarai ristabilito; allontana l'ingiustizia dalla tua dimora;
24 if you lay your gold down on the dust, Ophir down among the pebbles of the torrent,	24 considera l'oro come polvere, e il metallo di Ofir come i sassi del torrente.
25 Shaddai wil be bars of gold to you and silver piled in heaps.	25 Allora sarà l'Onnipotente il tuo oro e argento brillante per te.
26 Then Shaddai will be al your delight, and you wil lift your face to God.	26 Allora, sì, troverai delizia nell'Onnipotente e verso Dio leverai la faccia.
27 You wil pray, and he wil hear; and you wil be able to fulfil your vows.	27 Quando lo supplicherai, egli ti esaudirà e adempirai i tuoi voti.
28 Whatever you undertake wil go wel , and light will shine on your path;	28 Se deciderai una cosa, ti riuscirà e la luce brillerà sul tuo cammino.
29 for he casts down the pride of the arrogant, but he saves those of downcast eyes.	29 Poiché egli umilia l'alterigia del superbo e salva coloro che si umiliano.
30 He rescues anyone who is innocent; have your hands clean, and you wil be saved.	30 Egli libera l'innocente, e tu sarai liberato per la purezza delle tue mani".
