1 Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said:	1 ED Elifaz Temanita rispose e disse:
2 Can a human being contribute anything to God, when even someone intel igent can benefit onlyhimself?	2 L’uomo può egli fare alcun profitto a Dio? Anzi a sè stesso fa profitto l’uomo intendente.
3 Does Shaddai derive any benefit from your uprightness, or profit from your blameless conduct?	3 L’Onnipotente riceve egli alcun diletto, se tu sei giusto? O alcun guadagno, se tu cammini in integrità?
4 Do you think he is punishing you for your piety and bringing you to justice for that?	4 Ti castiga egli per paura che abbia di te? O viene egli teco a giudicio?
5 No, for your great wickedness, more likely, for your unlimited sins!	5 La tua malvagità non è essa grande? E le tue iniquità non son esse senza fine?
6 You have exacted unearned pledges from your brothers, stripped people naked of their clothes,	6 Conciossiachè tu abbi preso pegno da’ tuoi fratelli senza cagione, Ed abbi spogliati gl’ignudi de’ lor vestimenti.
7 failed to give water to the thirsty and refused bread to the hungry;	7 Tu non hai pur dato a bere dell’acqua allo stanco, Ed hai rifiutato il pane all’affamato.
8 handed the land over to a strong man, for some favoured person to move in,	8 Ma la terra è stata per l’uomo possente, E l’uomo di rispetto è abitato in essa.
9 sent widows away empty-handed and crushed the arms of orphans.	9 Tu hai rimandate le vedove a vuoto, E le braccia degli orfani son da te state fiaccate.
10 No wonder, then, if snares are al around you, and sudden terrors make you afraid;	10 Perciò tu hai de’ lacci d’intorno, Ed uno spavento di subito ti ha conturbato.
11 if light has turned to darkness, so that you cannot see, and you have been submerged in the flood.	11 Tu hai eziandio delle tenebre d’intorno, sì che tu non puoi vedere; Ed una piena d’acque ti ha coperto.
12 Does not God live high in the heavens, does he not see the zenith of the stars?	12 Iddio non è egli nell’alto de’ cieli? Riguarda il sommo delle stelle, come sono eccelse.
13 And because he is up there, you have said, 'What does God know? Can he judge through the darkcloud?	13 E pur tu hai detto: Che cosa conosce Iddio? Giudicherà egli per mezzo la caligine?
14 The clouds, to him, are an impenetrable veil, as he goes his way on the rim of the heavens.'	14 Le nuvole gli sono un nascondimento, ed egli non vede nulla, E passeggia per lo giro del cielo
15 And wil you stil fol ow the ancient trail trodden by the wicked,	15 Hai tu posto mente al cammino Che gli uomini iniqui hanno tenuto d’ogni tempo?
16 those who were borne off before their time, whose foundations were swamped by a flood,	16 I quali sono stati ricisi fuor di tempo, E il cui fondamento è scorso come un fiume;
17 for having said to God, 'Go away! What can Shaddai do to us?'	17 I quali dicevano a Dio: Dipartiti da noi. E che avea loro fatto l’Onnipotente?
18 Yet he himself had filled their houses with good things, although excluded from the plans of thewicked!	18 Egli avea loro ripiene le case di beni; Per ciò, sia lungi da me il consiglio degli empi.
19 At such a spectacle, the upright rejoice, and the innocent deride them:	19 I giusti vedranno queste cose, e se ne rallegreranno; E l’innocente si befferà di coloro.
20 'See how our enemies have been destroyed! See how their wealth has perished in the flames!'	20 Se la nostra sostanza non è stata distrutta, Pure ha il fuoco consumato il lor rimanente
21 Wel then! Make peace with him, be reconciled, and al your happiness will be restored to you.	21 Deh! fa’ conoscenza con Dio, e rappacificati con lui; Per questo mezzo ti avverrà il bene.
22 Welcome the teaching from his lips, and keep his words close to your heart.	22 Deh! ricevi la legge dalla sua bocca, E riponi le sue parole nel cuor tuo.
23 If you return, humbled, to Shaddai and drive wickedness far from your tent,	23 Se tu ti converti all’Onnipotente, tu sarai ristabilito, Se tu allontani dal tuo tabernacolo l’iniquità;
24 if you lay your gold down on the dust, Ophir down among the pebbles of the torrent,	24 E metterai l’oro in su la polvere, E l’oro di Ofir in su le selci de’ fiumi.
25 Shaddai wil be bars of gold to you and silver piled in heaps.	25 E l’Onnipotente sarà il tuo oro, E il tuo argento, e le tue forze.
26 Then Shaddai will be al your delight, and you wil lift your face to God.	26 Perciocchè allora tu prenderai diletto nell’Onnipotente, Ed alzerai la tua faccia a Dio.
27 You wil pray, and he wil hear; and you wil be able to fulfil your vows.	27 Tu gli supplicherai, ed egli ti esaudirà, E tu gli pagherai i tuoi voti.
28 Whatever you undertake wil go wel , and light will shine on your path;	28 Quando avrai determinato di fare alcuna cosa, Ella ti riuscirà sicuramente, E la luce risplenderà sopra le tue vie.
29 for he casts down the pride of the arrogant, but he saves those of downcast eyes.	29 Quando quelle saranno abbassate, allora dirai: Esaltazione; E Iddio salverà l’uomo con gli occhi chini.
30 He rescues anyone who is innocent; have your hands clean, and you wil be saved.	30 Egli lo libererà, quantunque non sia innocente; Anzi sarà liberato per la purità delle tue mani
