NEW JERUSALEMLXX
Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said:1 υπολαβων δε ελιφας ο θαιμανιτης λεγει
Can a human being contribute anything to God, when even someone intel igent can benefit onlyhimself?2 ποτερον ουχι ο κυριος εστιν ο διδασκων συνεσιν και επιστημην
Does Shaddai derive any benefit from your uprightness, or profit from your blameless conduct?3 τι γαρ μελει τω κυριω εαν συ ησθα τοις εργοις αμεμπτος η ωφελεια οτι απλωσης την οδον σου
Do you think he is punishing you for your piety and bringing you to justice for that?4 η λογον σου ποιουμενος ελεγξει σε και συνεισελευσεται σοι εις κρισιν
No, for your great wickedness, more likely, for your unlimited sins!5 ποτερον ουχ η κακια σου εστιν πολλη αναριθμητοι δε σου εισιν αι αμαρτιαι
You have exacted unearned pledges from your brothers, stripped people naked of their clothes,6 ηνεχυραζες δε τους αδελφους σου δια κενης αμφιασιν δε γυμνων αφειλου
failed to give water to the thirsty and refused bread to the hungry;7 ουδε υδωρ διψωντας εποτισας αλλα πεινωντων εστερησας ψωμον
handed the land over to a strong man, for some favoured person to move in,8 εθαυμασας δε τινων προσωπον ωκισας δε τους επι της γης
sent widows away empty-handed and crushed the arms of orphans.9 χηρας δε εξαπεστειλας κενας ορφανους δε εκακωσας
No wonder, then, if snares are al around you, and sudden terrors make you afraid;10 τοιγαρουν εκυκλωσαν σε παγιδες και εσπουδασεν σε πολεμος εξαισιος
if light has turned to darkness, so that you cannot see, and you have been submerged in the flood.11 το φως σοι σκοτος απεβη κοιμηθεντα δε υδωρ σε εκαλυψεν
Does not God live high in the heavens, does he not see the zenith of the stars?12 μη ουχι ο τα υψηλα ναιων εφορα τους δε υβρει φερομενους εταπεινωσεν
And because he is up there, you have said, 'What does God know? Can he judge through the darkcloud?13 και ειπας τι εγνω ο ισχυρος η κατα του γνοφου κρινει
The clouds, to him, are an impenetrable veil, as he goes his way on the rim of the heavens.'14 νεφη αποκρυφη αυτου και ουχ οραθησεται και γυρον ουρανου διαπορευσεται
And wil you stil fol ow the ancient trail trodden by the wicked,15 μη τριβον αιωνιον φυλαξεις ην επατησαν ανδρες αδικοι
those who were borne off before their time, whose foundations were swamped by a flood,16 οι συνελημφθησαν αωροι ποταμος επιρρεων οι θεμελιοι αυτων
for having said to God, 'Go away! What can Shaddai do to us?'17 οι λεγοντες κυριος τι ποιησει ημιν η τι επαξεται ημιν ο παντοκρατωρ
Yet he himself had filled their houses with good things, although excluded from the plans of thewicked!18 ος δε ενεπλησεν τους οικους αυτων αγαθων βουλη δε ασεβων πορρω απ' αυτου
At such a spectacle, the upright rejoice, and the innocent deride them:19 ιδοντες δικαιοι εγελασαν αμεμπτος δε εμυκτηρισεν
'See how our enemies have been destroyed! See how their wealth has perished in the flames!'20 ει μη ηφανισθη η υποστασις αυτων και το καταλειμμα αυτων καταφαγεται πυρ
Wel then! Make peace with him, be reconciled, and al your happiness will be restored to you.21 γενου δη σκληρος εαν υπομεινης ειτ' ο καρπος σου εσται εν αγαθοις
Welcome the teaching from his lips, and keep his words close to your heart.22 εκλαβε δε εκ στοματος αυτου εξηγοριαν και αναλαβε τα ρηματα αυτου εν καρδια σου
If you return, humbled, to Shaddai and drive wickedness far from your tent,23 εαν δε επιστραφης και ταπεινωσης σεαυτον εναντι κυριου πορρω εποιησας απο διαιτης σου το αδικον
if you lay your gold down on the dust, Ophir down among the pebbles of the torrent,24 θηση επι χωματι εν πετρα και ως πετρα χειμαρρους ωφιρ
Shaddai wil be bars of gold to you and silver piled in heaps.25 εσται ουν σου ο παντοκρατωρ βοηθος απο εχθρων καθαρον δε αποδωσει σε ωσπερ αργυριον πεπυρωμενον
Then Shaddai will be al your delight, and you wil lift your face to God.26 ειτα παρρησιασθηση εναντι κυριου αναβλεψας εις τον ουρανον ιλαρως
You wil pray, and he wil hear; and you wil be able to fulfil your vows.27 ευξαμενου δε σου προς αυτον εισακουσεται σου δωσει δε σοι αποδουναι τας ευχας
Whatever you undertake wil go wel , and light will shine on your path;28 αποκαταστησει δε σοι διαιταν δικαιοσυνης επι δε οδοις σου εσται φεγγος
for he casts down the pride of the arrogant, but he saves those of downcast eyes.29 οτι εταπεινωσεν αυτον και ερεις υπερηφανευσατο και κυφοντα οφθαλμοις σωσει
He rescues anyone who is innocent; have your hands clean, and you wil be saved.30 ρυσεται αθωον και διασωθητι εν καθαραις χερσιν σου
