1 Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said:	1 Élifaz de Téman prit alors la parole:
2 Can a human being contribute anything to God, when even someone intel igent can benefit onlyhimself?	2 Qu’est-ce qu’un homme peut apporter à Dieu? L’homme de bon sens n’est utile qu’à lui-même.
3 Does Shaddai derive any benefit from your uprightness, or profit from your blameless conduct?	3 Qu’importe au Tout-Puissant que tu aies tes raisons? Que gagne-t-il si tu te vois parfait?
4 Do you think he is punishing you for your piety and bringing you to justice for that?	4 Est-ce pour ta piété que Dieu te corrige et qu’il te fait un procès?
5 No, for your great wickedness, more likely, for your unlimited sins!	5 N’est-ce pas plutôt que ta méchanceté est grande et tes fautes innombrables?
6 You have exacted unearned pledges from your brothers, stripped people naked of their clothes,	6 Sans motif tu exigeais de tes frères des gages, il restaient nus car tu prenais leur manteau!
7 failed to give water to the thirsty and refused bread to the hungry;	7 Tu ne donnais pas à boire à l’assoiffé, à l’affamé tu refusais le pain.
8 handed the land over to a strong man, for some favoured person to move in,	8 Qu’arrive un homme fort, il s’empare des terres, et les gens en place s’y installent.
9 sent widows away empty-handed and crushed the arms of orphans.	9 Tu renvoyais les veuves les mains vides et tu brisais les bras de l’orphelin.
10 No wonder, then, if snares are al around you, and sudden terrors make you afraid;	10 C’est pourquoi te voilà entouré de pièges, paralysé soudain par la peur.
11 if light has turned to darkness, so that you cannot see, and you have been submerged in the flood.	11 La lumière s’est éteinte et tu ne vois plus, les eaux en crue t’ont submergé.
12 Does not God live high in the heavens, does he not see the zenith of the stars?	12 Bien sûr, Dieu est très haut dans les cieux: vois comme les étoiles sont hautes!
13 And because he is up there, you have said, 'What does God know? Can he judge through the darkcloud?	13 Mais alors tu as dit “Qu’est-ce que Dieu sait? Pourra-t-il juger à travers les nuages?
14 The clouds, to him, are an impenetrable veil, as he goes his way on the rim of the heavens.'	14 Les nuées font écran et il ne voit pas; il reste à se promener au pourtour des cieux.”
15 And wil you stil fol ow the ancient trail trodden by the wicked,	15 Veux-tu donc retomber dans les vieux chemins où s’avançaient les habitués du mal?
16 those who were borne off before their time, whose foundations were swamped by a flood,	16 Un instant a suffi pour les balayer, la crue des eaux emporta leurs fondations!
17 for having said to God, 'Go away! What can Shaddai do to us?'	17 Car ils disaient à Dieu: “Tiens-toi à l’écart! Que peut nous faire le Tout-Puissant?”
18 Yet he himself had filled their houses with good things, although excluded from the plans of thewicked!	18 C’est lui qui remplissait leurs maisons de richesses, mais les méchants prenaient leurs décisions sans lui.
19 At such a spectacle, the upright rejoice, and the innocent deride them:	19 Les justes le voient et se réjouissent, l’homme intègre se moque d’eux:
20 'See how our enemies have been destroyed! See how their wealth has perished in the flames!'	20 “Leur fortune est anéantie, le feu a dévoré tout ce qu’ils possédaient!”
21 Wel then! Make peace with him, be reconciled, and al your happiness will be restored to you.	21 Allons, rapproche-toi de lui, fais la paix, c’est le moyen de relever ta fortune.
22 Welcome the teaching from his lips, and keep his words close to your heart.	22 Reçois de sa bouche son instruction, et garde en ton cœur ses paroles.
23 If you return, humbled, to Shaddai and drive wickedness far from your tent,	23 Reviens humblement vers le Tout-Puissant, éloigne de ta tente ce qui est injustice,
24 if you lay your gold down on the dust, Ophir down among the pebbles of the torrent,	24 ne fais pas plus de cas de l’or que de la terre, de l’or d’Ofir que des pierres du torrent.
25 Shaddai wil be bars of gold to you and silver piled in heaps.	25 Le Puissant aussitôt se fera ton or, ta montagne d’argent.
26 Then Shaddai will be al your delight, and you wil lift your face to God.	26 Tu trouveras ta joie dans le Tout-Puissant, tu lèveras vers lui ton regard.
27 You wil pray, and he wil hear; and you wil be able to fulfil your vows.	27 Tu l’invoqueras et il t’exaucera; si tu fais un vœu, tu n’auras plus qu’à t’acquitter.
28 Whatever you undertake wil go wel , and light will shine on your path;	28 Tu feras des projets, ils réussiront, la lumière brillera sur tous tes chemins.
29 for he casts down the pride of the arrogant, but he saves those of downcast eyes.	29 Car Dieu abaisse l’orgueilleux et sauve celui qui tient les yeux baissés.
30 He rescues anyone who is innocent; have your hands clean, and you wil be saved.	30 Il délivre l’innocent: si tu as les mains pures, tu seras sauvé!
