For the director. Do not destroy. A miktam of David, when he fled from Saul into a cave.1 Unto the end. May you not destroy. Of David, with the inscription of a title.
Have mercy on me, God, have mercy on me. In you I seek shelter. In the shadow of your wings I seek shelter till harm pass by.2 If, truly and certainly, you speak justice, then judge what is right, you sons of men.
I call to God Most High, to God who provides for me.3 For, even in your heart, you work iniquity. Your hands construct injustice on the earth.
May God send help from heaven to save me, shame those who trample upon me. May God send fidelity and love. Selah4 Sinners have become foreigners from the womb; they have gone astray from conception. They have been speaking falsehoods.
I must lie down in the midst of lions hungry for human prey. Their teeth are spears and arrows; their tongue, a sharpened sword.5 Their fury is similar to that of a serpent; it is like a deaf asp, who even blocks her ears,
Show yourself over the heavens, God; may your glory appear above all the earth.6 who will not listen to the voice of charmers, nor even to the enchanter who chants wisely.
They have set a trap for my feet; my soul is bowed down; They have dug a pit before me. May they fall into it themselves! Selah7 God will crush their teeth within their own mouth. The Lord will break the molars of the lions.
My heart is steadfast, God, my heart is steadfast. I will sing and chant praise.8 They will come to nothing, like water flowing away. He has aimed his bow, while they are being weakened.
Awake, my soul; awake, lyre and harp! I will wake the dawn.9 Like wax that flows, they will be carried away. Fire has fallen upon them, and they will not see the sun.
I will praise you among the peoples, Lord; I will chant your praise among the nations.10 Before your thorns could know the brier, he consumes them alive, as if in rage.
For your love towers to the heavens; your faithfulness, to the skies.11 The just one will rejoice when he sees vindication. He will wash his hands in the blood of the sinner.
Show yourself over the heavens, God; may your glory appear above all the earth.12 And man will say, “If the just one is fruitful, then, truly, there is a God judging them on earth.”
