1 ויהי אחרי המגפה ויאמר יהוה אל משה ואל אלעזר בן אהרן הכהן לאמר	1 After this plague, Yahweh spoke to Moses and to the priest Eleazar son of Aaron and said:
2 שאו את ראש כל עדת בני ישראל מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה לבית אבתם כל יצא צבא בישראל	2 'Take a census of the whole community of Israelites, by families: al those of twenty years and over, fitto bear arms in Israel.'
3 וידבר משה ואלעזר הכהן אתם בערבת מואב על ירדן ירחו לאמר	3 So Moses and the priest Eleazar took a census of them on the Plains of Moab, near the Jordan byJericho. They counted
4 מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כאשר צוה יהוה את משה ובני ישראל היצאים מארץ מצרים	4 (as Yahweh had ordered Moses and the Israelites after leaving Egypt) men of twenty years and over:
5 ראובן בכור ישראל בני ראובן חנוך משפחת החנכי לפלוא משפחת הפלאי	5 Reuben, the first-born of Israel. The sons of Reuben: for Hanoch, the Hanochite clan; for Pal u, thePal uite clan;
6 לחצרן משפחת החצרוני לכרמי משפחת הכרמי	6 for Hezron, the Hezronite clan; for Carmi, the Carmite clan.
7 אלה משפחת הראובני ויהיו פקדיהם שלשה וארבעים אלף ושבע מאות ושלשים	7 These were the Reubenite clans. They numbered forty-three thousand seven hundred and thirty men.
8 ובני פלוא אליאב	8 The sons of Pallu: Eliab.
9 ובני אליאב נמואל ודתן ואבירם הוא דתן ואבירם קרואי העדה אשר הצו על משה ועל אהרן בעדת קרח בהצתם על יהוה	9 The sons of Eliab: Nemuel, Dathan and Abiram. These two, Dathan and Abiram, men of repute in thecommunity, were the ones who revolted against Moses and Aaron; they belonged to Korah's group when itrevolted against Yahweh.
10 ותפתח הארץ את פיה ותבלע אתם ואת קרח במות העדה באכל האש את חמשים ומאתים איש ויהיו לנס	10 The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them (with Korah when that group perished), when fireconsumed the two hundred and fifty men. They were a sign.
11 ובני קרח לא מתו	11 Korah's sons, however, did not perish.
12 בני שמעון למשפחתם לנמואל משפחת הנמואלי לימין משפחת הימיני ליכין משפחת היכיני	12 The sons of Simeon by clans: for Nemuel, the Nemuelite clan; for Jamin, the Jaminite clan; forJachin, the Jachinite clan;
13 לזרח משפחת הזרחי לשאול משפחת השאולי	13 for Zerah, the Zerahite clan; for Shaul, the Shaulite clan.
14 אלה משפחת השמעני שנים ועשרים אלף ומאתים	14 These were the Simeonite clans. They numbered twenty-two thousand two hundred men.
15 בני גד למשפחתם לצפון משפחת הצפוני לחגי משפחת החגי לשוני משפחת השוני	15 The sons of Gad by clans: for Zephon, the Zephonite clan; for Haggi, the Haggite clan; for Shuni, theShunite clan;
16 לאזני משפחת האזני לערי משפחת הערי	16 for Ozni, the Oznite clan; for Eri, the Erite clan;
17 לארוד משפחת הארודי לאראלי משפחת האראלי	17 for Arod, the Arodite clan; for Areli, the Arelite clan.
18 אלה משפחת בני גד לפקדיהם ארבעים אלף וחמש מאות	18 These were the clans of the sons of Gad. They numbered forty thousand five hundred men.
19 בני יהודה ער ואונן וימת ער ואונן בארץ כנען	19 The sons of Judah: Er and Onan. Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan.
20 ויהיו בני יהודה למשפחתם לשלה משפחת השלני לפרץ משפחת הפרצי לזרח משפחת הזרחי	20 The other sons of Judah became clans: for Shelah, the Shelahite clan; for Perez, the Perezzite clan;for Zerah, the Zerahite clan.
21 ויהיו בני פרץ לחצרן משפחת החצרני לחמול משפחת החמולי	21 The sons of Perez were: for Hezron, the Hezronite clan; for Hamul, the Hamulite clan.
22 אלה משפחת יהודה לפקדיהם ששה ושבעים אלף וחמש מאות	22 These were the clans of Judah. They numbered seventy-six thousand five hundred men.
23 בני יששכר למשפחתם תולע משפחת התולעי לפוה משפחת הפוני	23 The sons of Issachar by clans: for Tola, the Tolaite clan; for Puvah, the Puvahite clan;
24 לישוב משפחת הישובי לשמרן משפחת השמרני	24 for Jashub, the Jashubite clan; for Shimron, the Shimronite clan.
25 אלה משפחת יששכר לפקדיהם ארבעה וששים אלף ושלש מאות	25 These were the clans of Issachar. They numbered sixty-four thousand three hundred men.
26 בני זבולן למשפחתם לסרד משפחת הסרדי לאלון משפחת האלני ליחלאל משפחת היחלאלי	26 The sons of Zebulun by clans: for Sered, the Seredite clan; for Elon, the Elonite clan; for Jahleel, theJahleelite clan.
27 אלה משפחת הזבולני לפקדיהם ששים אלף וחמש מאות	27 These were the clans of Zebulun. They numbered sixty thousand five hundred men.
28 בני יוסף למשפחתם מנשה ואפרים	28 The sons of Joseph by clans: Manasseh and Ephraim.
29 בני מנשה למכיר משפחת המכירי ומכיר הוליד את גלעד לגלעד משפחת הגלעדי	29 The sons of Manasseh: for Machir, the Machirite clan; Machir fathered Gilead: for Gilead, theGileadite clan.
30 אלה בני גלעד איעזר משפחת האיעזרי לחלק משפחת החלקי	30 These were the sons of Gilead: for Iezer, the Iezerite clan; for Helek, the Helekite clan;
31 ואשריאל משפחת האשראלי ושכם משפחת השכמי	31 Asriel, the Asrielite clan; Shechem, the Shechemite clan;
32 ושמידע משפחת השמידעי וחפר משפחת החפרי	32 Shemida, the Shemidaite clan; Hepher, the Hepherite clan.
33 וצלפחד בן חפר לא היו לו בנים כי אם בנות ושם בנות צלפחד מחלה ונעה חגלה מלכה ותרצה	33 Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons, only daughters; the names of Zelophehad's daughterswere Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah.
34 אלה משפחת מנשה ופקדיהם שנים וחמשים אלף ושבע מאות	34 These were the clans of Manasseh. They numbered fifty-two thousand seven hundred men.
35 אלה בני אפרים למשפחתם לשותלח משפחת השתלחי לבכר משפחת הבכרי לתחן משפחת התחני	35 These were the sons of Ephraim by clans: for Shuthelah, the Shuthelahite clan; for Becher, theBecherite clan; for Tahan, the Tahanite clan.
36 ואלה בני שותלח לערן משפחת הערני	36 These were the sons of Shuthelah: for Eran, the Eranite clan.
37 אלה משפחת בני אפרים לפקדיהם שנים ושלשים אלף וחמש מאות אלה בני יוסף למשפחתם	37 These were the clans of Ephraim. They numbered thirty-two thousand five hundred men. Thesewere the sons of Joseph by clans.
38 בני בנימן למשפחתם לבלע משפחת הבלעי לאשבל משפחת האשבלי לאחירם משפחת האחירמי	38 The sons of Benjamin by clans: for Bela, the Belaite clan; for Ashbel, the Ashbelite clan; for Ahiram,the Ahiramite clan;
39 לשפופם משפחת השופמי לחופם משפחת החופמי	39 for Shephupham, the Shephuphamite clan; for Hupham, the Huphamite clan.
40 ויהיו בני בלע ארד ונעמן משפחת הארדי לנעמן משפחת הנעמי	40 Bela's sons were Ard and Naaman; for Ard, the Ardite clan; for Naaman, the Naamanite clan.
41 אלה בני בנימן למשפחתם ופקדיהם חמשה וארבעים אלף ושש מאות	41 These were the sons of Benjamin by clans. They numbered forty-five thousand six hundred men.
42 אלה בני דן למשפחתם לשוחם משפחת השוחמי אלה משפחת דן למשפחתם	42 These were the sons of Dan by clans: for Shuham, the Shuhamite clan. These were the sons of Danby clans.
43 כל משפחת השוחמי לפקדיהם ארבעה וששים אלף וארבע מאות	43 All the Shuhamite clans numbered sixty-four thousand four hundred men.
44 בני אשר למשפחתם לימנה משפחת הימנה לישוי משפחת הישוי לבריעה משפחת הבריעי	44 The sons of Asher by clans: for Imnah, the Imnahite clan; for Ishvi, the Ishvihite clan; for Beriah, theBeriahite clan.
45 לבני בריעה לחבר משפחת החברי למלכיאל משפחת המלכיאלי	45 For the sons of Beriah: for Heber, the Heberite clan; for Malchiel, the Malchielite clan.
46 ושם בת אשר שרח	46 The daughter of Asher was called Serah.
47 אלה משפחת בני אשר לפקדיהם שלשה וחמשים אלף וארבע מאות	47 These were the clans of Asher. They numbered fifty-three thousand four hundred men.
48 בני נפתלי למשפחתם ליחצאל משפחת היחצאלי לגוני משפחת הגוני	48 The sons of Naphtali by clans: for Jahzeel, the Jahzeelite clan; for Guni, the Gunite clan;
49 ליצר משפחת היצרי לשלם משפחת השלמי	49 for Jezer, the Jezerite clan; for Shil em, the Shil emite clan.
50 אלה משפחת נפתלי למשפחתם ופקדיהם חמשה וארבעים אלף וארבע מאות	50 These were the clans of Naphtali as divided into clans. The sons of Naphtali numbered forty-fivethousand four hundred men.
51 אלה פקודי בני ישראל שש מאות אלף ואלף שבע מאות ושלשים	51 Of the Israelites thus numbered, there were six hundred and one thousand seven hundred and thirtymen.
52 וידבר יהוה אל משה לאמר	52 Yahweh then spoke to Moses and said,
53 לאלה תחלק הארץ בנחלה במספר שמות	53 'The country must be shared out among these as a heritage, proportionately to the number of thoseinscribed.
54 לרב תרבה נחלתו ולמעט תמעיט נחלתו איש לפי פקדיו יתן נחלתו	54 To the large in number you wil give a large area of land, to the smal in number a small area; toeach the heritage wil be in proportion to the number registered.
55 אך בגורל יחלק את הארץ לשמות מטות אבתם ינחלו	55 The sharing out of the country must, however, be done by lot. Each wil receive a heritageproportionate to the number of names in their patriarchal tribes;
56 על פי הגורל תחלק נחלתו בין רב למעט	56 the heritage of each tribe wil be shared out by lot, depending on its larger or smal er numbers.'
57 ואלה פקודי הלוי למשפחתם לגרשון משפחת הגרשני לקהת משפחת הקהתי למררי משפחת המררי	57 These, by clans, are the Levites that were registered: for Gershon, the Gershonite clan; for Kohath,the Kohathite clan; for Merari, the Merarite clan.
58 אלה משפחת לוי משפחת הלבני משפחת החברני משפחת המחלי משפחת המושי משפחת הקרחי וקהת הולד את עמרם	58 These are the Levite clans: the Libnite clan, the Hebronite clan, the Mahlite clan, the Mushite clan,the Korahite clan. Kohath fathered Amram.
59 ושם אשת עמרם יוכבד בת לוי אשר ילדה אתה ללוי במצרים ותלד לעמרם את אהרן ואת משה ואת מרים אחתם	59 Amram's wife was cal ed Jokebed daughter of Levi, born to him in Egypt. To Amram she boreAaron, Moses and Miriam their sister.
60 ויולד לאהרן את נדב ואת אביהוא את אלעזר ואת איתמר	60 Aaron fathered Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
61 וימת נדב ואביהוא בהקריבם אש זרה לפני יהוה	61 Nadab and Abihu died when they brought unauthorised fire before Yahweh.
62 ויהיו פקדיהם שלשה ועשרים אלף כל זכר מבן חדש ומעלה כי לא התפקדו בתוך בני ישראל כי לא נתן להם נחלה בתוך בני ישראל	62 Altogether twenty-three thousand males of one month and over were registered. They were notregistered with the Israelites, since they were given no heritage with the Israelites.
63 אלה פקודי משה ואלעזר הכהן אשר פקדו את בני ישראל בערבת מואב על ירדן ירחו	63 Such were the men registered by Moses and the priest Eleazar who took a census of the Israeliteson the Plains of Moab near the Jordan by Jericho.
64 ובאלה לא היה איש מפקודי משה ואהרן הכהן אשר פקדו את בני ישראל במדבר סיני	64 Not one of them was among those whom Moses and the priest Aaron had registered when theycounted the Israelites in the desert of Sinai;
65 כי אמר יהוה להם מות ימתו במדבר ולא נותר מהם איש כי אם כלב בן יפנה ויהושע בן נון	65 for Yahweh had told them that these were to die in the desert and that none of them would be leftexcept Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
