1 David aber sagte zu sich selbst: »Eines Tages werde ich doch noch durch Sauls Hand weggerafft werden (= den Tod finden); es bleibt mir nichts Besseres übrig, als daß ich mich eilends im Lande der Philister in Sicherheit bringe; dann wird Saul davon abstehen, auf mich noch länger in allen Teilen Israels zu fahnden, und ich bin seinen Händen entronnen.«	1 And David said in his heart, "I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul; there is nothing better for me than that I should escape to the land of the Philistines; then Saul will despair of seeking me any longer within the borders of Israel, and I shall escape out of his hand."
2 So machte David sich denn auf und zog mit den sechshundert Mann, die er bei sich hatte, zu Achis, dem Sohne Maochs, dem König von Gath, hinüber (vgl. 21,11-16).	2 So David arose and went over, he and the six hundred men who were with him, to Achish the son of Maoch, king of Gath.
3 Er nahm bei diesem seinen Wohnsitz in Gath mit seinen Leuten, ein jeder mit seiner Familie, David selbst mit seinen beiden Frauen, Ahinoam aus Jesreel und Abigail, der Witwe Nabals, aus Karmel.	3 And David dwelt with Achish at Gath, he and his men, every man with his household, and David with his two wives, Ahino-am of Jezreel, and Abigail of Carmel, Nabal's widow.
4 Als nun Saul die Nachricht erhielt, daß David nach Gath entwichen sei, gab er es auf, noch länger nach ihm zu suchen.	4 And when it was told Saul that David had fled to Gath, he sought for him no more.
5 David aber sagte zu Achis: »Wenn du mir eine Gnade erweisen willst, so laß mir einen Platz in einer der Ortschaften des offenen Landes zum Wohnsitz anweisen; denn warum soll dein Knecht bei dir in der Königsstadt wohnen?«	5 Then David said to Achish, "If I have found favor in your eyes, let a place be given me in one of the country towns, that I may dwell there; for why should your servant dwell in the royal city with you?"
6 Da wies ihm Achis noch an demselben Tage Ziklag an. Infolgedessen hat Ziklag den Königen von Juda bis auf den heutigen Tag gehört.	6 So that day Achish gave him Ziklag; therefore Ziklag has belonged to the kings of Judah to this day.
7 Die ganze Zeit aber, die David im Lande der Philister zubrachte, betrug ein Jahr und vier Monate.	7 And the number of the days that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines was a year and four months.
8 David unternahm nun mit seinen Leuten Raubzüge und machte Einfälle in das Gebiet der Gesuriter, der Girsiter und der Amalekiter; denn das sind die Bewohner des Landes von alters her (oder: von Telam an) bis nach Sur hin und bis nach Ägypten.	8 Now David and his men went up, and made raids upon the Geshurites, the Girzites, and the Amalekites; for these were the inhabitants of the land from of old, as far as Shur, to the land of Egypt.
9 Sooft er aber in ihr Land einfiel, ließ er weder Männer noch Frauen am Leben und raubte Kleinvieh, Rinder, Esel, Kamele und Kleidungsstücke; darauf kehrte er wieder zu Achis zurück.	9 And David smote the land, and left neither man nor woman alive, but took away the sheep, the oxen, the asses, the camels, and the garments, and came back to Achish.
10 Wenn Achis ihn dann fragte: »Wo habt ihr diesmal einen Einfall gemacht?«, so antwortete David: »Im Südland von Juda« oder »im Südland der Jerahmeeliter« oder »im Südland der Keniter«.	10 When Achish asked, "Against whom have you made a raid today?" David would say, "Against the Negeb of Judah," or "Against the Negeb of the Jerahmeelites," or, "Against the Negeb of the Kenites."
11 Männer und Frauen aber ließ David deshalb nicht am Leben, um sie nicht nach Gath mitnehmen zu müssen; denn er dachte: »Sie könnten gegen uns aussagen und berichten: ›So und so ist David zu Werke gegangen.‹« Dieses Verfahren beobachtete David während der ganzen Zeit, die er im Lande der Philister zubrachte.	11 And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring tidings to Gath, thinking, "Lest they should tell about us, and say, So David has done.'" Such was his custom all the while he dwelt in the country of the Philistines.
12 Achis aber schenkte dem David Vertrauen, weil er dachte: »Er hat sich bei seinem Volk, bei Israel, tödlich verhaßt gemacht; darum wird er für immer mein Dienstmann bleiben.«	12 And Achish trusted David, thinking, "He has made himself utterly abhorred by his people Israel; therefore he shall be my servant always."
