1 Es lebte einst ein Mann im Lande Uz, Hiob mit Namen, und dieser Mann war fromm und rechtschaffen, fürchtete Gott und mied das Böse.	1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.
2 Sieben Söhne und drei Töchter wurden ihm geboren;	2 And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.
3 dazu besaß er siebentausend Stück Kleinvieh und dreitausend Kamele, fünfhundert Joch (= Paar) Rinder, fünfhundert Eselinnen und ein sehr zahlreiches Gesinde, so daß dieser Mann unter allen Bewohnern des Ostlandes der angesehenste war.	3 His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.
4 Nun pflegten seine Söhne im Hause eines jeden von ihnen an seinem Tage (= Geburtstage) ein festliches Mahl zu veranstalten und luden dann allemal auch ihre drei Schwestern ein, mit ihnen zu essen und zu trinken.	4 And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
5 Wenn aber die Tage des betreffenden Gastmahls um waren, ließ Hiob ihnen sagen, sie möchten sich heiligen; er stand dann am andern Morgen früh auf und brachte für jeden von ihnen ein Brandopfer dar; denn Hiob dachte: »Vielleicht haben meine Kinder sich versündigt und in ihrem Herzen Gott verwünscht (d.h. sich von Gott losgesagt).« So machte es Hiob jedesmal.	5 And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
6 Nun begab es sich eines Tages, daß die Gottessöhne kamen, um sich vor Gott, den HERRN, zu stellen; und unter ihnen erschien auch der Satan.	6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.
7 Da fragte der HERR den Satan: »Woher kommst du?« Der Satan gab dem HERRN zur Antwort: »Ich bin auf der Erde umhergestreift und habe eine Wanderung auf ihr vorgenommen.«	7 And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
8 Da sagte der HERR zum Satan: »Hast du wohl auf meinen Knecht Hiob achtgegeben? Denn so wie er ist kein Mensch auf der Erde, so fromm und rechtschaffen, so gottesfürchtig und dem Bösen feind.«	8 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
9 Der Satan erwiderte dem HERRN: »Ist Hiob etwa umsonst so gottesfürchtig?	9 Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
10 Hast du nicht selbst ihn und sein Haus und seinen ganzen Besitz rings umhegt? Was seine Hände angreifen, das segnest du, so daß sein Herdenbesitz sich immer weiter im Lande ausgebreitet hat.	10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
11 Aber strecke doch einmal deine Hand aus und lege sie an alles, was er besitzt: dann wird er sich schon offen von dir lossagen (oder: dir fluchen).«	11 But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.
12 Da antwortete der HERR dem Satan: »Gut! alles, was ihm gehört, soll in deine Gewalt gegeben sein! Nur an ihn selbst darfst du die Hand nicht legen!« Da ging der Satan vom Angesicht des HERRN hinweg.	12 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.
13 Während nun eines Tages Hiobs Söhne und Töchter im Hause ihres ältesten Bruders schmausten und Wein tranken,	13 And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:
14 kam plötzlich ein Bote zu Hiob und meldete: »Die Rinder pflügten gerade, und die Eselinnen befanden sich neben ihnen auf der Weide,	14 And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them:
15 da machten die Sabäer einen Überfall und trieben sie weg und erschlugen die Knechte mit dem Schwert; ich bin der einzige, der entronnen ist, um es dir zu melden!«	15 And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
16 Während dieser noch redete, kam schon ein anderer und berichtete: »Feuer Gottes (d.h. der Blitz) ist vom Himmel gefallen und hat das Kleinvieh und die Knechte vollständig verbrannt; ich bin der einzige, der entronnen ist, um es dir zu melden!«	16 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
17 Während dieser noch redete, kam schon wieder ein anderer und berichtete: »Die Chaldäer sind in drei Heerhaufen, die sie aufgestellt hatten, über die Kamele hergefallen und haben sie weggetrieben; sie haben auch die Knechte mit dem Schwert niedergemacht; ich bin der einzige, der entronnen ist, um es dir zu melden!«	17 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
18 Dieser hatte noch nicht ausgeredet, da kam wieder ein anderer und berichtete: »Deine Söhne und Töchter waren beim Essen und Weintrinken im Hause ihres ältesten Bruders,	18 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:
19 da kam plötzlich ein gewaltiger Sturmwind über die Steppe herüber und faßte das Haus an seinen vier Ecken, so daß es auf die jungen Leute stürzte und sie ums Leben kamen; ich bin der einzige, der entronnen ist, um es dir zu melden!«	19 And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
20 Da stand Hiob auf, zerriß sein Gewand und schor sich das Haupt; dann warf er sich auf die Erde nieder, berührte den Boden mit der Stirn,	20 Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,
21 und sagte: »Nacht bin ich aus meiner Mutter Schoß gekommen, und nackt werde ich dorthin zurückkehren; der HERR hat’s gegeben, der HERR hat’s genommen: der Name des HERRN sei gepriesen!«	21 And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.
22 Bei allen diesen Heimsuchungen versündigte sich Hiob nicht und tat nichts Ungebührliches vor Gott.	22 In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.
