1 Als die Philister gegen Israel kämpften, flohen die Israeliten vor ihnen; viele waren gefallen und lagen erschlagen auf dem Gebirge von Gilboa.	1 As they pressed their attack on Israel, with the Israelites fleeing before them and falling mortally wounded on Mount Gilboa,
2 Die Philister verfolgten Saul und seine Söhne und erschlugen Sauls Söhne Jonatan, Abinadab und Malkischua.	2 the Philistines pursued Saul and his sons closely, and slew Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, sons of Saul.
3 Um Saul selbst entstand ein schwerer Kampf. Die Bogenschützen hatten ihn getroffen und er war sehr schwer verwundet.	3 The battle raged around Saul, and the archers hit him; he was pierced through the abdomen.
4 Da sagte Saul zu seinem Waffenträger: Zieh dein Schwert und durchbohre mich damit! Sonst kommen diese Unbeschnittenen, durchbohren mich und treiben ihren Mutwillen mit mir. Der Waffenträger wollte es nicht tun; denn er hatte große Angst. Da nahm Saul selbst das Schwert und stürzte sich hinein.	4 Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, "Draw your sword and run me through, lest these uncircumcised come and make sport of me." But his armor-bearer, badly frightened, refused to do it. So Saul took his own sword and fell upon it.
5 Als der Waffenträger sah, dass Saul tot war, stürzte auch er sich in sein Schwert und starb zusammen mit Saul.	5 When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell upon his sword and died with him.
6 So kamen Saul, seine drei Söhne, sein Waffenträger und alle seine Männer an jenem Tag gemeinsam ums Leben.	6 Thus Saul, his three sons, and his armor-bearer died together on that same day.
7 Als die Israeliten auf der anderen Seite der Ebene und jenseits des Jordan sahen, dass die Israeliten geflohen und dass Saul und seine Söhne tot waren, verließen sie ihre Städte und flohen. Dann kamen die Philister und besetzten die Städte.	7 When the Israelites on the slope of the valley and those along the Jordan saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they too abandoned their cities and fled. Then the Philistines came and lived in those cities.
8 Als am nächsten Tag die Philister kamen, um die Erschlagenen auszuplündern, fanden sie Saul und seine drei Söhne, die auf dem Gebirge von Gilboa gefallen waren.	8 The day after the battle the Philistines came to strip the slain, and found Saul and his three sons lying on Mount Gilboa.
9 Sie schlugen ihm den Kopf ab, zogen ihm die Rüstung aus und schickten beides im Land der Philister umher, um ihrem Götzentempel und dem Volk die Siegesnachricht zu übermitteln.	9 They cut off Saul's head and stripped him of his armor, and then sent the good news throughout the land of the Philistines to their idols and to the people.
10 Die Rüstung Sauls legten sie im Astartetempel nieder; seinen Leichnam aber hefteten sie an die Mauer von Bet- Schean.	10 They put his armor in the temple of Astarte, but impaled his body on the wall of Bethshan.
11 Als die Einwohner von Jabesch-Gilead hörten, was die Philister mit Saul gemacht hatten,	11 When the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,
12 brachen alle kriegstüchtigen Männer auf, marschierten die ganze Nacht hindurch und nahmen die Leiche Sauls und die Leichen seiner Söhne von der Mauer von Bet-Schean ab; sie brachten sie nach Jabesch und verbrannten sie dort.	12 all their warriors set out, and after marching throughout the night, removed the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall of Beth-shan, and brought them to Jabesh, where they cremated them.
13 Dann nahmen sie die Gebeine, begruben sie unter der Tamariske von Jabesch und fasteten sieben Tage lang.	13 Then they took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree in Jabesh, and fasted for seven days.
