1 Ebenso sollt ihr Frauen euch euren Männern unterordnen, damit auch sie, falls sie dem Wort (des Evangeliums) nicht gehorchen, durch das Leben ihrer Frauen ohne Worte gewonnen werden,	1 In like manner also let wives be subject to their husbands: that if any believe not the word, they may be won without the word, by the conversation of the wives.
2 wenn sie sehen, wie ehrfürchtig und rein ihr lebt.	2 Considering your chaste conversation with fear.
3 Nicht auf äußeren Schmuck sollt ihr Wert legen, auf Haartracht, Gold und prächtige Kleider,	3 Whose adorning let it not be the outward plaiting of the hair, or the wearing of gold, or the putting on of apparel:
4 sondern was im Herzen verborgen ist, das sei euer unvergänglicher Schmuck: ein sanftes und ruhiges Wesen. Das ist wertvoll in Gottes Augen.	4 But the hidden man of the heart in the incorruptibility of a quiet and a meek spirit, which is rich in the sight of God.
5 So haben sich einst auch die heiligen Frauen geschmückt, die ihre Hoffnung auf Gott setzten: Sie ordneten sich ihren Männern unter.	5 For after this manner heretofore the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own husbands:
6 Sara gehorchte Abraham und nannte ihn ihren Herrn. Ihre Kinder seid ihr geworden, wenn ihr recht handelt und euch vor keiner Einschüchterung fürchtet.	6 As Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters you are, doing well, and not fearing any disturbance.
7 Ebenso sollt ihr Männer im Umgang mit euren Frauen rücksichtsvoll sein, denn sie sind der schwächere Teil; ehrt sie, denn auch sie sind Erben der Gnade des Lebens. So wird euren Gebeten nichts mehr im Weg stehen.	7 Ye husbands, likewise dwelling with them according to knowledge, giving honour to the female as to the weaker vessel, and as to the co-heirs of the grace of life: that your prayers be not hindered.
8 Endlich aber: seid alle eines Sinnes, voll Mitgefühl und brüderlicher Liebe, seid barmherzig und demütig!	8 And in fine, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, being lovers of the brotherhood, merciful, modest, humble:
9 Vergeltet nicht Böses mit Bösem noch Kränkung mit Kränkung! Stattdessen segnet; denn ihr seid dazu berufen, Segen zu erlangen.	9 Not rendering evil for evil, nor railing for railing, but contrariwise, blessing: for unto this are you called, that you may inherit a blessing.
10 Es heißt nämlich: Wer das Leben liebt und gute Tage zu sehen wünscht, der bewahre seine Zunge vor Bösem und seine Lippen vor falscher Rede.	10 For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile.
11 Er meide das Böse und tue das Gute; er suche Frieden und jage ihm nach.	11 Let him decline from evil, and do good: let him seek after peace and pursue it:
12 Denn die Augen des Herrn blicken auf die Gerechten und seine Ohren hören ihr Flehen; aber das Antlitz des Herrn richtet sich gegen die Bösen.	12 Because the eyes of the Lord are upon the just, and his ears unto their prayers: but the countenance of the Lord upon them that do evil things.
13 Und wer wird euch Böses zufügen, wenn ihr euch voll Eifer um das Gute bemüht?	13 And who is he that can hurt you, if you be zealous of good?
14 Aber auch wenn ihr um der Gerechtigkeit willen leiden müsst, seid ihr selig zu preisen. Fürchtet euch nicht vor ihnen und lasst euch nicht erschrecken,	14 But if also you suffer any thing for justice' sake, blessed are ye. And be not afraid of their fear, and be not troubled.
15 sondern haltet in eurem Herzen Christus, den Herrn, heilig! Seid stets bereit, jedem Rede und Antwort zu stehen, der nach der Hoffnung fragt, die euch erfüllt;	15 But sanctify the Lord Christ in your hearts, being ready always to satisfy every one that asketh you a reason of that hope which is in you.
16 aber antwortet bescheiden und ehrfürchtig, denn ihr habt ein reines Gewissen. Dann werden die, die euch beschimpfen, weil ihr in (der Gemeinschaft mit) Christus ein rechtschaffenes Leben führt, sich wegen ihrer Verleumdungen schämen müssen.	16 But with modesty and fear, having a good conscience: that whereas they speak evil of you, they may be ashamed who falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.
17 Es ist besser, für gute Taten zu leiden, wenn es Gottes Wille ist, als für böse.	17 For it is better doing well (if such be the will of God) to suffer, than doing ill.
18 Denn auch Christus ist der Sünden wegen ein einziges Mal gestorben, er, der Gerechte, für die Ungerechten, um euch zu Gott hinzuführen; dem Fleisch nach wurde er getötet, dem Geist nach lebendig gemacht.	18 Because Christ also died once for our sins, the just for the unjust: that he might offer us to God, being put to death indeed in the flesh, but enlivened in the spirit,
19 So ist er auch zu den Geistern gegangen, die im Gefängnis waren, und hat ihnen gepredigt.	19 In which also coming he preached to those spirits that were in prison:
20 Diese waren einst ungehorsam, als Gott in den Tagen Noachs geduldig wartete, während die Arche gebaut wurde; in ihr wurden nur wenige, nämlich acht Menschen, durch das Wasser gerettet.	20 Which had been some time incredulous, when they waited for the patience of God in the days of Noe, when the ark was a building: wherein a few, that is, eight souls, were saved by water.
21 Dem entspricht die Taufe, die jetzt euch rettet. Sie dient nicht dazu, den Körper von Schmutz zu reinigen, sondern sie ist eine Bitte an Gott um ein reines Gewissen aufgrund der Auferstehung Jesu Christi,	21 Whereunto baptism being of the like form, now saveth you also: not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the examination of a good conscience towards God by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
22 der in den Himmel gegangen ist; dort ist er zur Rechten Gottes und Engel, Gewalten und Mächte sind ihm unterworfen.	22 Who is on the right hand of God, swallowing down death, that we might be made heirs of life everlasting: being gone into heaven, the angels and powers and virtues being made subject to him.
