Der erste Brief an Timotheus 1

1 Paulus, Apostel Christi Jesu durch den Auftrag Gottes, unseres Retters, und Christi Jesu, unserer Hoffnung,	1 Paul, apostle of Christ Jesus appointed by the command of God our Saviour and of Christ Jesus ourhope,
2 an Timotheus, seinen echten Sohn durch den Glauben. Gnade, Erbarmen und Friede von Gott, dem Vater, und Christus Jesus, unserem Herrn.	2 to Timothy, true child of mine in the faith. Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from ChristJesus our Lord.
3 Bei meiner Abreise nach Mazedonien habe ich dich gebeten, in Ephesus zu bleiben, damit du bestimmten Leuten verbietest, falsche Lehren zu verbreiten	3 When I was setting out for Macedonia I urged you to stay on in Ephesus to instruct certain people not tospread wrong teaching
4 und sich mit Fabeleien und endlosen Geschlechterreihen abzugeben, die nur Streitfragen mit sich bringen, statt dem Heilsplan Gottes zu dienen, der sich im Glauben verwirklicht.	4 or to give attention to myths and unending genealogies; these things only foster doubts instead offurthering God's plan which is founded on faith.
5 Das Ziel der Unterweisung ist Liebe aus reinem Herzen, gutem Gewissen und ungeheucheltem Glauben.	5 The final goal at which this instruction aims is love, issuing from a pure heart, a clear conscience and asincere faith.
6 Davon sind aber manche abgekommen und haben sich leerem Geschwätz zugewandt.	6 Some people have missed the way to these things and turned to empty speculation,
7 Sie wollen Gesetzeslehrer sein, verstehen aber nichts von dem, was sie sagen und worüber sie so sicher urteilen.	7 trying to be teachers of the Law; but they understand neither the words they use nor the matters aboutwhich they make such strong assertions.
8 Wir wissen: Das Gesetz ist gut, wenn man es im Sinn des Gesetzes anwendet	8 We are wel aware that the Law is good, but only provided it is used legitimately,
9 und bedenkt, dass das Gesetz nicht für den Gerechten bestimmt ist, sondern für Gesetzlose und Ungehorsame, für Gottlose und Sünder, für Menschen ohne Glauben und Ehrfurcht, für solche, die Vater oder Mutter töten, für Mörder,	9 on the understanding that laws are not framed for people who are upright. On the contrary, they are forcriminals and the insubordinate, for the irreligious and the wicked, for the sacrilegious and the godless; they arefor people who kil their fathers or mothers and for murderers,
10 Unzüchtige, Knabenschänder, Menschenhändler, für Leute, die lügen und Meineide schwören und all das tun, was gegen die gesunde Lehre verstößt.	10 for the promiscuous, homosexuals, kidnappers, for liars and for perjurers -- and for everything else thatis contrary to the sound teaching
11 So lehrt das Evangelium von der Herrlichkeit des seligen Gottes, das mir anvertraut ist.	11 that accords with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, the gospel that was entrusted to me.
12 Ich danke dem, der mir Kraft gegeben hat: Christus Jesus, unserem Herrn. Er hat mich für treu gehalten und in seinen Dienst genommen,	12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength. By cal ing me into his service he has judgedme trustworthy,
13 obwohl ich ihn früher lästerte, verfolgte und verhöhnte. Aber ich habe Erbarmen gefunden, denn ich wusste in meinem Unglauben nicht, was ich tat.	13 even though I used to be a blasphemer and a persecutor and contemptuous. Mercy, however, wasshown me, because while I lacked faith I acted in ignorance;
14 So übergroß war die Gnade unseres Herrn, die mir in Christus Jesus den Glauben und die Liebe schenkte.	14 but the grace of our Lord filled me with faith and with the love that is in Christ Jesus.
15 Das Wort ist glaubwürdig und wert, dass man es beherzigt: Christus Jesus ist in die Welt gekommen, um die Sünder zu retten. Von ihnen bin ich der Erste.	15 Here is a saying that you can rely on and nobody should doubt: that Christ Jesus came into the worldto save sinners. I myself am the greatest of them;
16 Aber ich habe Erbarmen gefunden, damit Christus Jesus an mir als Erstem seine ganze Langmut beweisen konnte, zum Vorbild für alle, die in Zukunft an ihn glauben, um das ewige Leben zu erlangen.	16 and if mercy has been shown to me, it is because Jesus Christ meant to make me the leading exampleof his inexhaustible patience for al the other people who were later to trust in him for eternal life.
17 Dem König der Ewigkeit, dem unvergänglichen, unsichtbaren, einzigen Gott, sei Ehre und Herrlichkeit in alle Ewigkeit. Amen.	17 To the eternal King, the undying, invisible and only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
18 Diese Ermahnung lege ich dir ans Herz, mein Sohn Timotheus, im Gedanken an die prophetischen Worte, die einst über dich gesprochen wurden; durch diese Worte gestärkt, kämpfe den guten Kampf,	18 Timothy, my son, these are the instructions that I am giving you, in accordance with the words oncespoken over you by the prophets, so that in their light you may fight like a good soldier
19 gläubig und mit reinem Gewissen. Schon manche haben die Stimme ihres Gewissens missachtet und haben im Glauben Schiffbruch erlitten,	19 with faith and a good conscience for your weapons. Some people have put conscience aside andwrecked their faith in consequence.
20 darunter Hymenäus und Alexander, die ich dem Satan übergeben habe, damit sie durch diese Strafe lernen, Gott nicht mehr zu lästern.	20 I mean men like Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan so that they may learnnot to be blasphemous.
