1 Nach diesen Worten ging Jesus mit seinen Jüngern hinaus, auf die andere Seite des Baches Kidron. Dort war ein Garten; in den ging er mit seinen Jüngern hinein.	1 When Jesus had said these things, he departed with his disciples across the Torrent of Kidron, where there was a garden, into which he entered with his disciples.
2 Auch Judas, der Verräter, der ihn auslieferte, kannte den Ort, weil Jesus dort oft mit seinen Jüngern zusammengekommen war.	2 But Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus had frequently met with his disciples there.
3 Judas holte die Soldaten und die Gerichtsdiener der Hohenpriester und der Pharisäer und sie kamen dorthin mit Fackeln, Laternen und Waffen.	3 Then Judas, when he had received a cohort from both the high priests and the attendants of the Pharisees, approached the place with lanterns and torches and weapons.
4 Jesus, der alles wusste, was mit ihm geschehen sollte, ging hinaus und fragte sie: Wen sucht ihr?	4 And so Jesus, knowing all that was about to happen to him, advanced and said to them, “Who are you seeking?”
5 Sie antworteten ihm: Jesus von Nazaret. Er sagte zu ihnen: Ich bin es. Auch Judas, der Verräter, stand bei ihnen.	5 They answered him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Now Judas, who betrayed him, was also standing with them.
6 Als er zu ihnen sagte: Ich bin es!, wichen sie zurück und stürzten zu Boden.	6 Then, when he said to them, “I am he,” they moved back and fell to the ground.
7 Er fragte sie noch einmal: Wen sucht ihr? Sie sagten: Jesus von Nazaret.	7 Then again he questioned them: “Who are you seeking?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.”
8 Jesus antwortete: Ich habe euch gesagt, dass ich es bin. Wenn ihr mich sucht, dann lasst diese gehen!	8 Jesus responded: “I told you that I am he. Therefore, if you are seeking me, permit these others to go away.”
9 So sollte sich das Wort erfüllen, das er gesagt hatte: Ich habe keinen von denen verloren, die du mir gegeben hast.	9 This was so that the word might be fulfilled, which he said, “Of those whom you have given to me, I have not lost any of them.”
10 Simon Petrus aber, der ein Schwert bei sich hatte, zog es, schlug nach dem Diener des Hohenpriesters und hieb ihm das rechte Ohr ab; der Diener hieß Malchus.	10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it, and he struck the servant of the high priest, and he cut off his right ear. Now the name of the servant was Malchus.
11 Da sagte Jesus zu Petrus: Steck das Schwert in die Scheide! Der Kelch, den mir der Vater gegeben hat - soll ich ihn nicht trinken?	11 Therefore, Jesus said to Peter: “Set your sword into the scabbard. Should I not drink the chalice which my father has given to me?”
12 Die Soldaten, ihre Befehlshaber und die Gerichtsdiener der Juden nahmen Jesus fest, fesselten ihn	12 Then the cohort, and the tribune, and the attendants of the Jews apprehended Jesus and bound him.
13 und führten ihn zuerst zu Hannas; er war nämlich der Schwiegervater des Kajaphas, der in jenem Jahr Hoherpriester war.	13 And they led him away, first to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year.
14 Kajaphas aber war es, der den Juden den Rat gegeben hatte: Es ist besser, dass ein einziger Mensch für das Volk stirbt.	14 Now Caiaphas was the one who had given counsel to the Jews that it was expedient for one man to die for the people.
15 Simon Petrus und ein anderer Jünger folgten Jesus. Dieser Jünger war mit dem Hohenpriester bekannt und ging mit Jesus in den Hof des hohepriesterlichen Palastes.	15 And Simon Peter was following Jesus with another disciple. And that disciple was known to the high priest, and so he entered with Jesus into the court of the high priest.
16 Petrus aber blieb draußen am Tor stehen. Da kam der andere Jünger, der Bekannte des Hohenpriesters, heraus; er sprach mit der Pförtnerin und führte Petrus hinein.	16 But Peter was standing outside at the entrance. Therefore, the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the woman who was the doorkeeper, and he led in Peter.
17 Da sagte die Pförtnerin zu Petrus: Bist du nicht auch einer von den Jüngern dieses Menschen? Er antwortete: Nein.	17 Therefore, the woman servant keeping the door said to Peter, “Are you not also among the disciples of this man?” He said, “I am not.”
18 Die Diener und die Knechte hatten sich ein Kohlenfeuer angezündet und standen dabei, um sich zu wärmen; denn es war kalt. Auch Petrus stand bei ihnen und wärmte sich.	18 Now the servants and attendants were standing before burning coals, for it was cold, and they were warming themselves. And Peter was standing with them also, warming himself.
19 Der Hohepriester befragte Jesus über seine Jünger und über seine Lehre.	19 Then the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his doctrine.
20 Jesus antwortete ihm: Ich habe offen vor aller Welt gesprochen. Ich habe immer in der Synagoge und im Tempel gelehrt, wo alle Juden zusammenkommen. Nichts habe ich im Geheimen gesprochen.	20 Jesus responded to him: “I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews meet. And I have said nothing in secret.
21 Warum fragst du mich? Frag doch die, die mich gehört haben, was ich zu ihnen gesagt habe; sie wissen, was ich geredet habe.	21 Why do you question me? Question those who heard what I said to them. Behold, they know these things that I have said.”
22 Auf diese Antwort hin schlug einer von den Knechten, der dabeistand, Jesus ins Gesicht und sagte: Redest du so mit dem Hohenpriester?	22 Then, when he had said this, one the attendants standing nearby struck Jesus, saying: “Is this the way you answer the high priest?”
23 Jesus entgegnete ihm: Wenn es nicht recht war, was ich gesagt habe, dann weise es nach; wenn es aber recht war, warum schlägst du mich?	23 Jesus answered him: “If I have spoken wrongly, offer testimony about the wrong. But if I have spoken correctly, then why do you strike me?”
24 Danach schickte ihn Hannas gefesselt zum Hohenpriester Kajaphas.	24 And Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas, the high priest.
25 Simon Petrus aber stand (am Feuer) und wärmte sich. Sie sagten zu ihm: Bist nicht auch du einer von seinen Jüngern? Er leugnete und sagte: Nein.	25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. Then they said to him, “Are you not also one of his disciples?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”
26 Einer von den Dienern des Hohenpriesters, ein Verwandter dessen, dem Petrus das Ohr abgehauen hatte, sagte: Habe ich dich nicht im Garten bei ihm gesehen?	26 One of the servants of the high priest (a relative of him whose ear Peter had cut off) said to him, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?”
27 Wieder leugnete Petrus und gleich darauf krähte ein Hahn.	27 Therefore, again, Peter denied it. And immediately the rooster crowed.
28 Von Kajaphas brachten sie Jesus zum Prätorium; es war früh am Morgen. Sie selbst gingen nicht in das Gebäude hinein, um nicht unrein zu werden, sondern das Paschalamm essen zu können.	28 Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas into the praetorium. Now it was morning, and so they did not enter into the praetorium, so that they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.
29 Deshalb kam Pilatus zu ihnen heraus und fragte: Welche Anklage erhebt ihr gegen diesen Menschen?	29 Therefore, Pilate went outside to them, and he said, “What accusation are you bringing against this man?”
30 Sie antworteten ihm: Wenn er kein Übeltäter wäre, hätten wir ihn dir nicht ausgeliefert.	30 They responded and said to him, “If he were not an evil-doer, we would not have handed him over you.”
31 Pilatus sagte zu ihnen: Nehmt ihr ihn doch und richtet ihn nach eurem Gesetz! Die Juden antworteten ihm: Uns ist es nicht gestattet, jemand hinzurichten.	31 Therefore, Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him according to your own law.” Then the Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to execute anyone.”
32 So sollte sich das Wort Jesu erfüllen, mit dem er angedeutet hatte, auf welche Weise er sterben werde.	32 This was so that the word of Jesus would be fulfilled, which he spoke signifying what kind of death he would die.
33 Pilatus ging wieder in das Prätorium hinein, ließ Jesus rufen und fragte ihn: Bist du der König der Juden?	33 Then Pilate entered the praetorium again, and he called Jesus and said to him, “You are the king of the Jews?”
34 Jesus antwortete: Sagst du das von dir aus, oder haben es dir andere über mich gesagt?	34 Jesus responded, “Are you saying this of yourself, or have others spoken to you about me?”
35 Pilatus entgegnete: Bin ich denn ein Jude? Dein eigenes Volk und die Hohenpriester haben dich an mich ausgeliefert. Was hast du getan?	35 Pilate responded: “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the high priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?”
36 Jesus antwortete: Mein Königtum ist nicht von dieser Welt. Wenn es von dieser Welt wäre, würden meine Leute kämpfen, damit ich den Juden nicht ausgeliefert würde. Aber mein Königtum ist nicht von hier.	36 Jesus responded: “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my ministers would certainly strive so that I would not be handed over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not now from here.”
37 Pilatus sagte zu ihm: Also bist du doch ein König? Jesus antwortete: Du sagst es, ich bin ein König. Ich bin dazu geboren und dazu in die Welt gekommen, dass ich für die Wahrheit Zeugnis ablege. Jeder, der aus der Wahrheit ist, hört auf meine Stimme.	37 And so Pilate said to him, “You are a king, then?” Jesus answered, “You are saying that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world: so that I may offer testimony to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice.”
38 Pilatus sagte zu ihm: Was ist Wahrheit? Nachdem er das gesagt hatte, ging er wieder zu den Juden hinaus und sagte zu ihnen: Ich finde keinen Grund, ihn zu verurteilen.	38 Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and he said to them, “I find no case against him.
39 Ihr seid gewohnt, dass ich euch am Paschafest einen Gefangenen freilasse. Wollt ihr also, dass ich euch den König der Juden freilasse?	39 But you have a custom, that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Therefore, do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?”
40 Da schrien sie wieder: Nicht diesen, sondern Barabbas! Barabbas aber war ein Straßenräuber.	40 Then they all cried out repeatedly, saying: “Not this one, but Barabbas.” Now Barabbas was a robber.
