1 Es war vor dem Paschafest. Jesus wusste, dass seine Stunde gekommen war, um aus dieser Welt zum Vater hinüberzugehen. Da er die Seinen, die in der Welt waren, liebte, erwies er ihnen seine Liebe bis zur Vollendung.	1 Before the feast day of the Passover, Jesus knew that the hour was approaching when he would pass from this world to the Father. And since he had always loved his own who were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
2 Es fand ein Mahl statt, und der Teufel hatte Judas, dem Sohn des Simon Iskariot, schon ins Herz gegeben, ihn zu verraten und auszuliefern.	2 And when the meal had taken place, when the devil had now put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray him,
3 Jesus, der wusste, dass ihm der Vater alles in die Hand gegeben hatte und dass er von Gott gekommen war und zu Gott zurückkehrte,	3 knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands and that he came from God and was going to God,
4 stand vom Mahl auf, legte sein Gewand ab und umgürtete sich mit einem Leinentuch.	4 he rose up from the meal, and he set aside his vestments, and when he had received a towel, he wrapped it around himself.
5 Dann goss er Wasser in eine Schüssel und begann, den Jüngern die Füße zu waschen und mit dem Leinentuch abzutrocknen, mit dem er umgürtet war.	5 Next he put water into a shallow bowl, and he began to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel with which he was wrapped.
6 Als er zu Simon Petrus kam, sagte dieser zu ihm: Du, Herr, willst mir die Füße waschen?	6 And then he came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to him, “Lord, would you wash my feet?”
7 Jesus antwortete ihm: Was ich tue, verstehst du jetzt noch nicht; doch später wirst du es begreifen.	7 Jesus responded and said to him: “What I am doing, you do not now understand. But you shall understand it afterward.”
8 Petrus entgegnete ihm: Niemals sollst du mir die Füße waschen! Jesus erwiderte ihm: Wenn ich dich nicht wasche, hast du keinen Anteil an mir.	8 Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you will have no place with me.”
9 Da sagte Simon Petrus zu ihm: Herr, dann nicht nur meine Füße, sondern auch die Hände und das Haupt.	9 Simon Peter said to him, “Then Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!”
10 Jesus sagte zu ihm: Wer vom Bad kommt, ist ganz rein und braucht sich nur noch die Füße zu waschen. Auch ihr seid rein, aber nicht alle.	10 Jesus said to him: “He who is washed need only wash his feet, and then he will be entirely clean. And you are clean, but not all.”
11 Er wusste nämlich, wer ihn verraten würde; darum sagte er: Ihr seid nicht alle rein.	11 For he knew which one would betray him. For this reason, he said, “You are not all clean.”
12 Als er ihnen die Füße gewaschen, sein Gewand wieder angelegt und Platz genommen hatte, sagte er zu ihnen: Begreift ihr, was ich an euch getan habe?	12 And so, after he washed their feet and received his vestments, when he had sat down at table again, he said to them: “Do you know what I have done for you?
13 Ihr sagt zu mir Meister und Herr und ihr nennt mich mit Recht so; denn ich bin es.	13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you speak well: for so I am.
14 Wenn nun ich, der Herr und Meister, euch die Füße gewaschen habe, dann müsst auch ihr einander die Füße waschen.	14 Therefore, if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash the feet of one another.
15 Ich habe euch ein Beispiel gegeben, damit auch ihr so handelt, wie ich an euch gehandelt habe.	15 For I have given you an example, so that just as I have done for you, so also should you do.
16 Amen, amen, ich sage euch: Der Sklave ist nicht größer als sein Herr und der Abgesandte ist nicht größer als der, der ihn gesandt hat.	16 Amen, amen, I say to you, the servant is not greater than his Lord, and the apostle is not greater than he who sent him.
17 Selig seid ihr, wenn ihr das wisst und danach handelt.	17 If you understand this, you shall be blessed if you will do it.
18 Ich sage das nicht von euch allen. Ich weiß wohl, welche ich erwählt habe, aber das Schriftwort muss sich erfüllen: Einer, der mein Brot aß, hat mich hintergangen.	18 I am not speaking about all of you. I know those whom I have chosen. But this is so that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats bread with me shall lift up his heel against me.’
19 Ich sage es euch schon jetzt, ehe es geschieht, damit ihr, wenn es geschehen ist, glaubt: Ich bin es.	19 And I tell you this now, before it happens, so that when it has happened, you may believe that I am.
20 Amen, amen, ich sage euch: Wer einen aufnimmt, den ich sende, nimmt mich auf; wer aber mich aufnimmt, nimmt den auf, der mich gesandt hat.	20 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever receives anyone whom I send, receives me. And whoever receives me, receives him who sent me.”
21 Nach diesen Worten war Jesus im Innersten erschüttert und bekräftigte: Amen, amen, das sage ich euch: Einer von euch wird mich verraten.	21 When Jesus had said these things, he was troubled in spirit. And he bore witness by saying: “Amen, amen, I say to you, that one among you shall betray me.”
22 Die Jünger blickten sich ratlos an, weil sie nicht wussten, wen er meinte.	22 Therefore, the disciples looked around at one another, uncertain about whom he spoke.
23 Einer von den Jüngern lag an der Seite Jesu; es war der, den Jesus liebte.	23 And leaning against the bosom of Jesus was one of his disciples, the one whom Jesus loved.
24 Simon Petrus nickte ihm zu, er solle fragen, von wem Jesus spreche.	24 Therefore, Simon Peter motioned to this one and said to him, “Who is it that he is speaking about?”
25 Da lehnte sich dieser zurück an die Brust Jesu und fragte ihn: Herr, wer ist es?	25 And so, leaning against the chest of Jesus, he said to him, “Lord, who is it?”
26 Jesus antwortete: Der ist es, dem ich den Bissen Brot, den ich eintauche, geben werde. Dann tauchte er das Brot ein, nahm es und gab es Judas, dem Sohn des Simon Iskariot.	26 Jesus responded, “It is he to whom I shall extend the dipped bread.” And when he had dipped the bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon.
27 Als Judas den Bissen Brot genommen hatte, fuhr der Satan in ihn. Jesus sagte zu ihm: Was du tun willst, das tu bald!	27 And after the morsel, Satan entered into him. And Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.”
28 Aber keiner der Anwesenden verstand, warum er ihm das sagte.	28 Now none of those sitting at table knew why he had said this to him.
29 Weil Judas die Kasse hatte, meinten einige, Jesus wolle ihm sagen: Kaufe, was wir zum Fest brauchen!, oder Jesus trage ihm auf, den Armen etwas zu geben.	29 For some were thinking that, because Judas held the purse, that Jesus had told him, “Buy those things which are needed by us for the feast day,” or that he might give something to the needy.
30 Als Judas den Bissen Brot genommen hatte, ging er sofort hinaus. Es war aber Nacht.	30 Therefore, having accepted the morsel, he went out immediately. And it was night.
31 Als Judas hinausgegangen war, sagte Jesus: Jetzt ist der Menschensohn verherrlicht und Gott ist in ihm verherrlicht.	31 Then, when he had gone out, Jesus said: “Now the Son of man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him.
32 Wenn Gott in ihm verherrlicht ist, wird auch Gott ihn in sich verherrlichen, und er wird ihn bald verherrlichen.	32 If God has been glorified in him, then God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him without delay.
33 Meine Kinder, ich bin nur noch kurze Zeit bei euch. Ihr werdet mich suchen, und was ich den Juden gesagt habe, sage ich jetzt auch euch: Wohin ich gehe, dorthin könnt ihr nicht gelangen.	33 Little sons, for a brief while, I am with you. You shall seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you are not able to go,’ so also I say to you now.
34 Ein neues Gebot gebe ich euch: Liebt einander! Wie ich euch geliebt habe, so sollt auch ihr einander lieben.	34 I give you a new commandment: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, so also must you love one another.
35 Daran werden alle erkennen, dass ihr meine Jünger seid: wenn ihr einander liebt.	35 By this, all shall recognize that you are my disciples: if you will have love for one another.”
36 Simon Petrus sagte zu ihm: Herr, wohin willst du gehen? Jesus antwortete: Wohin ich gehe, dorthin kannst du mir jetzt nicht folgen. Du wirst mir aber später folgen.	36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus responded: “Where I am going, you are not able to follow me now. But you shall follow afterward.”
37 Petrus sagte zu ihm: Herr, warum kann ich dir jetzt nicht folgen? Mein Leben will ich für dich hingeben.	37 Peter said to him: “Why am I unable to follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!”
38 Jesus entgegnete: Du willst für mich dein Leben hingeben? Amen, amen, das sage ich dir: Noch bevor der Hahn kräht, wirst du mich dreimal verleugnen.	38 Jesus answered him: “You will lay down your life for me? Amen, amen, I say to you, the rooster will not crow, until you deny me three times.”
