1 Da erhob die ganze Gemeinde ein lautes Geschrei und das Volk weinte die ganze Nacht.	1 And so, crying out, the entire crowd wept throughout that night.
2 Alle Israeliten murrten über Mose und Aaron und die ganze Gemeinde sagte zu ihnen: Wären wir doch in Ägypten oder wenigstens hier in der Wüste gestorben!	2 And all the sons of Israel were murmuring against Moses and Aaron, saying:
3 Warum nur will uns der Herr in jenes Land bringen? Etwa damit wir durch das Schwert umkommen und unsere Frauen und Kinder eine Beute der Feinde werden? Wäre es für uns nicht besser, nach Ägypten zurückzukehren?	3 “If only we had died in Egypt,” and, “If only we would perish in this vast wilderness,” and, “May the Lord not lead us into this land, lest we fall by the sword, and our wives, as well as our children, be led away as captives. Is it not better to return to Egypt?”
4 Und sie sagten zueinander: Wir wollen einen neuen Anführer wählen und nach Ägypten zurückkehren.	4 And they said to one another, “Let us appoint our leader, and so return to Egypt.”
5 Da warfen sich Mose und Aaron vor der ganzen Gemeindeversammlung der Israeliten auf ihr Gesicht nieder.	5 And when Moses and Aaron heard this, they fell prone on the ground in the sight of the multitude of the sons of Israel.
6 Josua, der Sohn Nuns, und Kaleb, der Sohn Jefunnes, zwei von denen, die das Land erkundet hatten, zerrissen ihre Kleider	6 Yet truly, Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who themselves had also viewed the land, tore their garments,
7 und sagten zu der ganzen Gemeinde der Israeliten: Das Land, das wir durchwandert und erkundet haben, dieses Land ist überaus schön.	7 and they said to the entire multitude of the sons of Israel: “The land that we circled through is very good.
8 Wenn der Herr uns wohlgesinnt ist und uns in dieses Land bringt, dann schenkt er uns ein Land, in dem Milch und Honig fließen.	8 If the Lord will be gracious to us, he will lead us into it, and he will give us the land flowing with milk and honey.
9 Lehnt euch nur nicht gegen den Herrn auf! Habt keine Angst vor den Leuten in jenem Land; sie werden unsere Beute. Ihr schützender Schatten ist von ihnen gewichen, denn der Herr ist mit uns. Habt keine Angst vor ihnen!	9 Do not choose to be rebellious against the Lord. And do not fear the people of this land, for, like bread, so are we able to devour them. All protection has withdrawn from them. The Lord is with us. Do not be afraid.”
10 Doch die ganze Gemeinde drohte Mose und Aaron zu steinigen. Da erschien die Herrlichkeit des Herrn am Offenbarungszelt allen Israeliten,	10 And when the entire multitude cried out, and they wanted to crush them with stones, the glory of the Lord appeared, over the roof of the covenant, to all the sons of Israel.
11 und der Herr sprach zu Mose: Wie lange verachtet mich dieses Volk noch, wie lange noch wollen sie nicht an mich glauben trotz all der Zeichen, die ich mitten unter ihnen vollbracht habe?	11 And the Lord said to Moses: “How long will this people disparage me? How long will they refuse to believe me, despite all the signs that I have wrought before them?
12 Ich will sie mit der Pest schlagen und vertreiben; aber dich will ich zu einem Volk machen, das größer und mächtiger ist als dieses.	12 Therefore, I will strike them with a pestilence, and so I will consume them. But you I will make the ruler over a great nation, and one which is mightier than this one.”
13 Da antwortete Mose dem Herrn: Die Ägypter werden hören, dass du dieses Volk mit deiner Kraft aus ihrer Mitte hierher geführt hast,	13 And Moses said to the Lord: “But then the Egyptians, from whose midst you led out this people,
14 und sie werden zu den Einwohnern dieses Landes sagen, sie hätten gehört, dass du, Herr, mitten in diesem Volk warst, dass du, Herr, sichtbar erschienen bist, dass deine Wolke über ihnen stand, dass du ihnen bei Tag in einer Wolkensäule und bei Nacht in einer Feuersäule vorangegangen bist,	14 and the inhabitants of this land, who have heard that you, O Lord, are among this people, and that you are seen face to face, and that your cloud protects them, and that you go before them with a column of cloud by day, and a column of fire by night,
15 dass du dann aber dieses Volk wie einen einzigen Mann umgebracht hast. Wenn sie das alles über dich hören, werden die Völker sagen:	15 may hear that you have killed so great a multitude, as if they were one man, and they may say:
16 Weil Jahwe nicht imstande war, dieses Volk in das Land zu bringen, das er ihnen mit einem Eid zugesichert hatte, hat er sie in der Wüste abgeschlachtet.	16 ‘He was not able to lead the people into the land about which he had sworn. Therefore, he slew them in the wilderness.’
17 Gerade jetzt sollte sich die Kraft meines Herrn in ihrer ganzen Größe zeigen, wie du gesagt hast:	17 Therefore, may the strength of the Lord be magnified, just as you swore, saying:
18 Ich bin Jahwe, langmütig und reich an Huld, der Schuld und Frevel wegnimmt, der aber (den Sünder) nicht ungestraft lässt, der die Schuld der Väter an den Söhnen verfolgt, an der dritten und vierten Generation:	18 ‘The Lord is patient and full of mercy, taking away iniquity and wickedness, and forsaking no one who is harmless. He visits the sins of the fathers upon the sons, to the third and fourth generation.’
19 Verzeih also diesem Volk seine Sünde nach deiner großen Huld, wie du diesem Volk auch schon bisher vergeben hast, von Ägypten bis hierher.	19 Forgive, I beg you, the sins of this people, according to the greatness of your mercy, just as you have been gracious to them in their journey from Egypt to this place.”
20 Da sprach der Herr: Ich verzeihe ihm, da du mich bittest.	20 And the Lord said: “I have forgiven them according to your word.
21 Doch so wahr ich lebe und die Herrlichkeit des Herrn das ganze Land erfüllt:	21 Also, as I live, the entire world shall be filled with the glory of the Lord.
22 Alle Männer, die meine Herrlichkeit und meine Zeichen gesehen haben, die ich in Ägypten und in der Wüste vollbracht habe und die mich jetzt schon zum zehnten Mal auf die Probe gestellt und doch nicht auf mich gehört haben,	22 And yet, all the men who have seen my majesty, and the signs that I have wrought in Egypt and in the wilderness, and who have tested me ten times already, and yet have not obeyed my voice,
23 sie alle werden das Land nicht zu sehen bekommen, das ich ihren Vätern mit einem Eid zugesichert habe. Keiner von denen, die mich verachtet haben, wird es zu sehen bekommen.	23 these shall not see the land, about which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of those who detracted me gaze upon it.
24 Meinen Knecht Kaleb aber, der anders denkt und treu zu mir hält, ihn werde ich in das Land bringen. Er darf es betreten und seine Nachkommen sollen es erben.	24 My servant Caleb, who, being full of another spirit, has followed me, I will lead into this land, through which he has wandered, and his offspring shall possess it.
25 Die Amalekiter und die Kanaaniter sitzen in der Ebene. Brecht also morgen auf und schlagt eine andere Richtung ein, in die Wüste, zum Schilfmeer hin!	25 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites live in the valleys. Tomorrow, move the camp and return into the wilderness, by the way of the Red Sea.”
26 Der Herr sprach zu Mose und Aaron:	26 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying:
27 Wie lange soll das mit dieser bösen Gemeinde so weitergehen, die immer über mich murrt? Ich habe mir das Murren der Israeliten jetzt lange genug angehört.	27 “How long will this very wicked multitude murmur against me? I have heard the complaints of the sons of Israel.
28 Sag ihnen: So wahr ich lebe - Spruch des Herrn -, ich will euch das antun, womit ihr mir die Ohren vollgeschrien habt:	28 Therefore, say to them: As I live, says the Lord, as you spoke in my hearing, so will I do to you.
29 Hier in der Wüste sollen eure Leichen liegen bleiben, alle ohne Ausnahme; jeder von euch, der gemustert worden ist, wird sterben, alle Männer von zwanzig Jahren und darüber, die über mich gemurrt haben.	29 In the wilderness, here shall your carcasses lie. All you who were numbered from twenty years and above, and who have murmured against me,
30 Keiner von euch wird in das Land kommen, auch wenn ich meine Hand erhoben und geschworen habe, euch darin wohnen zu lassen, außer Kaleb, der Sohn Jefunnes, und Josua, der Sohn Nuns.	30 you shall not enter into the land, over which I lifted up my hand to cause you to live there, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
31 Eure Kinder aber, von denen ihr gesagt habt, sie würden eine Beute der Feinde werden, sie werde ich in das Land bringen. Sie werden das Land kennen lernen, das ihr verschmäht habt.	31 But your little ones, about whom you said that they would be a prey to the enemies, I will lead them in, so that they may see the land that has displeased you.
32 Eure Leichen aber werden in dieser Wüste liegen bleiben.	32 Your carcasses shall lie in the wilderness.
33 Eure Söhne müssen vierzig Jahre lang ihr Vieh in der Wüste weiden lassen; sie haben so lange unter eurer Untreue zu leiden, bis ihr alle tot in der Wüste liegt.	33 Your sons shall wander in the desert for forty years, and they shall bear your fornication, until the carcasses of their fathers are consumed in the desert.
34 So viele Tage, wie ihr gebraucht habt, um das Land zu erkunden, nämlich vierzig Tage, so viele Jahre lang - für jeden Tag ein Jahr - müsst ihr die Folgen eurer Schuld tragen, also vierzig Jahre lang; dann werdet ihr erkennen, was es heißt, mir Widerstand zu leisten.	34 According to the number of the forty days, during which you examined the land, one year shall be charged for each day. And so, for forty years you shall take back your iniquities, and you shall know my retribution.
35 Ich, der Herr, habe gesprochen. Unwiderruflich werde ich es mit dieser ganzen bösen Gemeinde so machen, die sich gegen mich zusammengerottet hat: In dieser Wüste finden sie ihr Ende, hier müssen sie sterben.	35 For just as I have spoken, so shall I do, to this entire most wicked multitude, which has risen up together against me. In the wilderness, here shall it fade away and die.”
36 Die Männer, die Mose ausgeschickt hatte, um das Land erkunden zu lassen, die dann aber nach ihrer Rückkehr die ganze Gemeinde zum Murren verführt hatten,	36 Therefore, all the men, whom Moses had sent to contemplate the land, and who, having returned, had caused the entire multitude to murmur against him, disparaging the land as if it were evil,
37 fielen plötzlich tot zu Boden, vor den Augen des Herrn, alle, die über das Land falsche Gerüchte verbreitet hatten.	37 suffered death and were struck down in the sight of the Lord.
38 Nur Josua, der Sohn Nuns, und Kaleb, der Sohn Jefunnes, blieben am Leben, als einzige von allen, die ausgezogen waren, um das Land zu erkunden.	38 But only Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive, out of all those who had journeyed to examine the land.
39 Mose sagte das alles den Israeliten. Da wurde das Volk sehr traurig.	39 And Moses spoke all these words to all the sons of Israel, and the people mourned exceedingly.
40 Sie standen am nächsten Morgen auf, um auf die Höhe des Gebirges zu steigen; sie sagten: Wir ziehen jetzt zu dem Ort hinauf, den der Herr genannt hat. Ja, wir haben gesündigt.	40 And behold, rising up at first light, they climbed to the top of the mountain, and they said, “We are prepared to ascend to the place, about which the Lord has spoken, for we have sinned.”
41 Da sagte Mose: Warum übertretet ihr den Befehl des Herrn? Das wird euch nicht gelingen.	41 And Moses said to them: “Why do you transgress the word of the Lord, merely because it will not result in prosperity for you?
42 Zieht nicht hinauf, denn der Herr ist nicht bei euch; ihr werdet von euren Feinden nur geschlagen werden.	42 Do not ascend, for the Lord is not with you, lest you be overthrown before your enemies.
43 Denn ihr habt dort die Amalekiter und die Kanaaniter gegen euch, und ihr werdet durch das Schwert umkommen. Weil ihr euch vom Herrn abgewendet habt, wird der Herr nicht mit euch sein.	43 The Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, by whose sword you shall be ruined, for you were not willing to consent to the Lord, and so the Lord is not with you.”
44 Doch in ihrem Starrsinn stiegen sie auf die Höhe des Gebirges hinauf. Aber die Bundeslade des Herrn und Mose wichen nicht von ihrer Stelle mitten im Lager.	44 But they, having been darkened, ascended to the top of the mountain. But the ark of the testament of the Lord, and Moses, did not withdraw from the camp.
45 Da kamen die Amalekiter und die Kanaaniter, die dort im Gebirge wohnten, herunter und schlugen die Israeliten und zersprengten sie bis nach Horma.	45 And the Amalekites descended, along with those Canaanites who were living in the mountains. And so, striking and cutting them down, they pursued them all the way to Hormah.
