1 Davon hörte in jenen Tagen Judit, die Tochter Meraris, des Sohnes des Uz, des Sohnes Josefs, des Sohnes Usiëls, des Sohnes Hilkijas, des Sohnes Hananjas, des Sohnes Gideons, des Sohnes Rafains, des Sohnes Ahitubs, des Sohnes Elijas, des Sohnes Hilkijas, des Sohnes Eliabs, des Sohnes Natanaels, des Sohnes Schelumiëls, des Sohnes Zurischaddais, des Sohnes Simeons, des Sohnes Israels.	1 Judith was informed at the time of what had happened. She was the daughter of Merari son of Ox, sonof Joseph, son of Oziel, son of Elkiah, son of Ananias, son of Gideon, son of Raphaim, son of Ahitub, son ofElijah, son of Hilkiah, son of Eliab, son of Nathanael, son of Salamiel, son of Sarasadai, son of Israel.
2 Ihr Mann Manasse, der aus ihrem Stamm und ihrer Sippe war, hatte zur Zeit der Gerstenernte den Tod gefunden.	2 Her husband Manasseh, of her own tribe and family, had died at the time of the barley harvest.
3 Als er nämlich bei den Garbenbindern auf dem Feld stand, traf ihn ein Hitzschlag; er musste sich zu Bett legen und starb in seiner Heimatstadt Betulia. Man begrub ihn bei seinen Vätern auf dem Feld zwischen Dotan und Jibleam.	3 He was supervising the men as they bound up the sheaves in the field when he caught sunstroke andhad to take to his bed. He died in Bethulia, his home town, and was buried with his ancestors in the field that liesbetween Dothan and Balamon.
4 Nun lebte Judit schon drei Jahre und vier Monate als Witwe in ihrem Haus.	4 As a widow, Judith stayed inside her home for three years and four months.
5 Sie hatte für sich auf dem flachen Dach ihres Hauses ein Zelt aufstellen lassen, hatte ein Trauergewand angelegt und trug die Kleider einer Witwe.	5 She had had an upper room built for herself on the roof. She wore sackcloth next to the skin anddressed in widow's weeds.
6 Sie fastete, seit sie Witwe war, alle Tage, außer am Sabbat und am Vortag des Sabbats, am Neumond und am Vortag des Neumonds und an den Festen und Freudentagen des Hauses Israel.	6 She fasted every day of her widowhood except for the Sabbath eve, the Sabbath itself, the eve of NewMoon, the feast of New Moon and the joyful festivals of the House of Israel.
7 Sie hatte eine schöne Gestalt und ein blühendes Aussehen. Ihr Gatte Manasse hatte ihr Gold und Silber, Knechte und Mägde, Vieh und Felder hinterlassen, die sie in ihrem Besitz hielt.	7 Now she was very beautiful, charming to see. Her husband Manasseh had left her gold and silver,menservants and maidservants, herds and land; and she lived among al her possessions
8 Niemand konnte ihr etwas Böses nachsagen, denn sie war sehr gottesfürchtig.	8 without anyone finding a word to say against her, so devoutly did she fear God.
9 Judit hörte von den Vorwürfen des Volkes gegen das Stadtoberhaupt, als es wegen des Wassermangels den Mut verlor. Ebenso erfuhr sie, was Usija den Leuten geantwortet hatte und dass er ihnen unter Eid versprochen hatte, nach Ablauf von fünf Tagen die Stadt an die Assyrer auszuliefern.	9 Hearing how the water shortage had demoralised the people and how they had complained bitterly tothe headman of the town, and being also told what Uzziah had said to them and how he had given them his oathto surrender the town to the Assyrians in five days' time,
10 Da ließ sie durch ihre Dienerin, die ihrem ganzen Hauswesen vorstand, die Ältesten ihrer Heimatstadt, Kabri und Karmi, herbeiholen.	10 Judith immediately sent the serving-woman who ran her household to summon Chabris and Charmis,two elders of the town.
11 Als sie zu ihr kamen, sagte sie zu ihnen: Hört mich an, ihr Vorsteher der Einwohner von Betulia! Es war nicht recht, was ihr heute vor dem Volk gesagt habt. Durch diesen Eid, den ihr geschworen habt, habt ihr Gott und euch selbst festgelegt; denn ihr habt erklärt, dass ihr die Stadt unseren Feinden ausliefern wollt, wenn der Herr euch nicht inzwischen Hilfe schickt.	11 When these came in she said: 'Listen to me, leaders of the people of Bethulia. You were wrong tospeak to the people as you did today and to bind yourself by oath, in defiance of God, to surrender the town toour enemies if the Lord did not come to your help within a set number of days.
12 Wer seid ihr denn, dass ihr am heutigen Tag Gott auf die Probe stellt und euch vor allen Leuten an die Stelle Gottes setzt?	12 Who are you, to put God to the test today, you, of al people, to set yourselves above him?
13 Ihr wollt den Herrn, den Allmächtigen, auf die Probe stellen und kommt doch ewig zu keiner Erkenntnis.	13 You put the Lord Almighty to the test! You do not understand anything, and never wil .
14 Nicht einmal die Tiefe des Menschenherzens könnt ihr ergründen und die Gedanken seines Geistes erfassen. Wie wollt ihr dann Gott erforschen, der das alles geschaffen hat? Wie wollt ihr seine Gedanken erkennen und seine Absichten verstehen? Nein, meine Brüder, reizt den Herrn, unseren Gott, nicht zum Zorn!	14 If you cannot sound the depths of the human heart or unravel the arguments of the human mind, howcan you fathom the God who made all things, or sound his mind or unravel his purposes? No, brothers, do notprovoke the anger of the Lord our God.
15 Auch wenn er nicht gewillt ist, uns in diesen fünf Tagen Hilfe zu schaffen, so hat doch er zu bestimmen, zu welcher Zeit er uns helfen oder uns vor den Augen unserer Feinde vernichten will.	15 Although it may not be his wil to help us within the next five days, he has the power to protect us for asmany days as he pleases, just as he has the power to destroy us before our enemies.
16 Versucht nicht, die Entscheidungen des Herrn, unseres Gottes, zu erzwingen; denn Gott ist nicht wie ein Mensch, dem man drohen kann, und wie ein Menschenkind, das man beeinflussen kann.	16 But you have no right to demand guarantees where the designs of the Lord our God are concerned.For God is not to be threatened as a human being is, nor is he, like a mere human, to be cajoled.
17 Darum wollen wir die Rettung von ihm erwarten und ihn um Hilfe anrufen. Er wird unser Flehen erhören, wenn es seinem Willen entspricht.	17 Rather, as we wait patiently for him to save, let us plead with him to help us. He wil hear our voice ifsuch is his good pleasure.
18 Denn eines gab es bei uns nicht und gibt es auch heute nicht: Es gibt weder einen Stamm noch eine Familie, weder einen Gau noch eine Stadt, die von Menschen gemachte Götter anbeten, wie es in früherer Zeit geschah.	18 'And indeed of recent times and stil today there is not one tribe of ours, or family, or vil age, or townthat has worshipped gods made by human hand, as once was done,
19 Damals wurden unsere Väter dem Schwert und der Plünderung preisgegeben und mussten vor den Augen unserer Feinde schwere Niederlagen erleiden.	19 which was the reason why our ancestors were delivered over to sword and sack, and perished inmisery at the hands of our enemies.
20 Wir aber kennen keinen anderen Gott als ihn allein. Daher dürfen wir hoffen, dass er uns und unser Volk nicht im Stich lassen wird.	20 We for our part acknowledge no other God but him; and so we may hope he wil not look on usdisdainfully or desert our nation.
21 Wenn wir nämlich überwältigt werden, dann wird auch ganz Judäa erobert und unser Heiligtum geplündert werden. Von uns aber wird Gott für die Entweihung des Heiligtums blutige Rechenschaft fordern.	21 'If indeed they capture us, as you expect, then al Judaea wil be captured too, and our holy placesplundered, and we shal answer with our blood for their profanation.
22 Uns wird er die Ermordung unserer Brüder, die Entvölkerung des Landes, die Verwüstung unseres Erbbesitzes zur Last legen, inmitten der Heiden, bei denen wir als Sklaven dienen und unseren Herren Anlass zu Spott und Verachtung sein werden.	22 The slaughter of our brothers, the captivity of our country, the unpeopling of our heritage, will recoil onour own heads among the nations whose slaves we shal become, and our new masters wil look down on us asan outrage and a disgrace;
23 Unsere Knechtschaft wird dann nicht mehr zum Guten gewendet werden, sondern der Herr, unser Gott, wird sie für uns zur Schande werden lassen.	23 for our surrender wil not reinstate us in their favour; no, the Lord our God will make it a thing to beashamed of.
24 Daher, liebe Brüder, wollen wir jetzt unseren Stammesbrüdern beweisen, dass wir für ihr Leben einstehen und dass das Heiligtum, der Tempel und der Altar, sich auf uns verlassen können.	24 So now, brothers, let us set an example to our brothers, since their lives depend on us, and thesanctuary -- Temple and altar -- rests on us.
25 Bei alldem aber lasst uns dem Herrn, unserem Gott, danken, dass er uns ebenso prüft wie schon unsere Väter.	25 'Al this being so, let us rather give thanks to the Lord our God who, as he tested our ancestors, is nowtesting us.
26 Denkt daran, was er mit Abraham machte, wie er Isaak prüfte und was Jakob im syrischen Mesopotamien erlebte, als er die Schafe Labans, des Bruders seiner Mutter, hütete.	26 Remember how he treated Abraham, all the ordeals of Isaac, al that happened to Jacob in SyrianMesopotamia while he kept the sheep of Laban, his mother's brother.
27 Denn wie er diese Männer im Feuer geläutert hat, um ihr Herz zu prüfen, so hat er auch mit uns kein Strafgericht vor, sondern der Herr züchtigt seine Freunde, um sie zur Einsicht zu führen.	27 For as these ordeals were intended by him to search their hearts, so now this is not vengeance thatGod is exacting on us, but a warning inflicted by the Lord on those who are near his heart.'
28 Da sagte Usija zu ihr: Alles, was du gesagt hast, kam aus einem edlen Herzen und es gibt niemand, der deinen Worten widersprechen kann.	28 Uzziah replied, 'Everything you have just said comes from an honest heart and no one will contradict aword of it.
29 Deine Weisheit wird ja nicht erst heute offenbar, sondern schon von deiner frühesten Jugend an kennt das ganze Volk deine Einsicht und weiß, wie edel die Gedanken deines Herzens sind.	29 Not that today is the first time your wisdom has been displayed; from your earliest years all the peoplehave known how shrewd you are and of how sound a heart.
30 Aber das Volk leidet furchtbaren Durst; sie zwangen uns zu tun, was wir ihnen versprochen haben, und einen Eid auf uns zu laden, den wir nicht brechen dürfen.	30 But, parched with thirst, the people forced us to act as we had promised them and to bind ourselves byan inviolable oath.
31 Doch bete du jetzt für uns, denn du bist eine gottesfürchtige Frau. Dann wird der Herr Regen schicken, um unsere Zisternen zu füllen, und wir brauchen nicht zu verschmachten.	31 You are a devout woman; pray to the Lord, then, to send us a downpour to fil our storage-wel s, so thatour faintness may pass.'
32 Da sagte Judit zu ihnen: Hört mich an! Ich will eine Tat vollbringen, von der man noch in fernsten Zeiten den Kindern unseres Volkes erzählen wird.	32 Judith replied, 'Listen to me, I intend to do something, the memory of which wil be handed down to thechildren of our race from age to age.
33 Kommt diese Nacht an das Tor, wenn ich mit meiner Dienerin hinausgehe. Bevor die Frist abgelaufen ist, die ihr für die Übergabe der Stadt an unsere Feinde gesetzt habt, wird der Herr durch meine Hand Israel gnädig Hilfe bringen.	33 Tonight you must be at the gate of the town. I shal make my way out with my attendant. Before thetime fixed by you for surrendering the town to our enemies, the Lord wil make use of me to rescue Israel.
34 Fragt nicht nach meinem Vorhaben; denn ich werde euch nichts mitteilen, bevor das vollendet ist, was ich tun will.	34 You must not ask what I intend to do; I shall not tel you until I have done it.'
35 Da sagten Usija und die Stadtältesten zu ihr: Geh in Frieden! Gott, der Herr, sei dein Führer bei dem Strafgericht an unseren Feinden.	35 Uzziah and the chief men said, 'Go in peace. May the Lord show you a way to take revenge on ourenemies.'
36 Dann verließen sie das Zelt und kehrten auf ihre Posten zurück.	36 And leaving the upper room they went back to their posts.
