EINHEITSUBERSETZUNG BIBEL	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Als sich der Lärm bei den Männern, die um den Kriegsrat herumstanden, gelegt hatte, sagte Holofernes, der Oberbefehlshaber der assyrischen Streitmacht, in Gegenwart des ganzen Söldnerheeres zu Achior und zu allen Moabitern:	1 When the noise of the crowd surrounding the council had subsided, Holofernes, commander-in-chief of the Assyrian army, said to Achior, in the presence of the whole throng of coastland peoples, of the Moabites, and of the Ammonite mercenaries:
2 Wer bist du denn, Achior, und was bedeuten schon diese Söldner Efraims, dass du dich heute in unserer Mitte als Prophet aufspielst und erklärst, man dürfe das Volk Israel nicht bekriegen, weil sein Gott ihm Hilfe leiste? Gibt es denn überhaupt einen Gott außer Nebukadnezzar? Er wird seine Macht aufbieten und sie vom Erdboden vertilgen, ohne dass ihr Gott sie rettet.	2 "Who are you, Achior, to prophesy among us as you have done today, and to tell us not to fight against the Israelites because their God protects them? What god is there beside Nebuchadnezzar? He will send his force and destroy them from the face of the earth. Their God will not save them;
3 Wir aber, seine Knechte, werden sie schlagen wie einen einzigen Mann. Sie werden dem Ansturm unserer Reiterei nicht widerstehen können;	3 but we, the servants of Nebuchadnezzar, will strike them down as one man, for they will be unable to withstand the force of our cavalry.
4 mit ihr werden wir sie vernichten, sodass die Berge von ihrem Blut getränkt und die Felder mit ihren Leichen übersät sein werden. Sie werden uns nicht standhalten, sondern restlos untergehen. Das sagt der König Nebukadnezzar, der Herr der ganzen Erde; er hat es so bestimmt und seine Worte können nicht zurückgenommen werden.	4 We will overwhelm them with it, and the mountains shall be drunk with their blood, and their plains filled with their corpses. Not a trace of them shall survive our attack: they shall utterly perish, says King Nebuchadnezzar, lord of all the earth; for he has spoken, and his words shall not remain unfulfilled.
5 Aber du, Achior, Söldner aus Ammon, hast diese Worte an deinem Unglückstag gesprochen. Du sollst mir von heute an nicht mehr unter die Augen treten, bis ich die Rache an diesem Volk aus Ägypten vollstreckt habe.	5 As for you, Achior, you Ammonite mercenary, for saying these things in a moment of perversity you shall not see my face after today, until I have taken revenge on this race of people from Egypt.
6 Wenn ich dann zurückkomme, soll das Schwert meines Heeres und die Lanze meiner Gefolgsleute auch deine Rippen durchbohren und du wirst zusammen mit ihren Toten dahinsinken.	6 Then at my return, the sword of my army or the spear of my servants will pierce your sides, and you shall fall among their slain.
7 Meine Diener werden dich auf das Bergland schaffen und dich in einen der Orte an den Gebirgspässen bringen.	7 My servants will now conduct you to the mountain region, and leave you at one of the towns along the ascent.
8 Dort sollst du gemeinsam mit ihnen umkommen.	8 You shall not die till you are destroyed together with them.
9 Wenn du aber in deinem Herzen die Hoffnung hegst, dass sie nicht überwältigt werden, dann brauchst du nicht vor Angst zu zittern. Ich habe gesprochen und keines meiner Worte wird unerfüllt bleiben.	9 If you still cherish the hope that they will not be taken, then there is no need for you to be downcast. I have spoken, and my words shall not prove false in any respect."
10 Darauf befahl Holofernes den Dienern, die in seinem Zelt bereitstanden, Achior festzunehmen, ihn nach Betulia zu bringen und an die Israeliten auszuliefern.	10 Then Holofernes ordered the servants who were standing by in his tent to seize Achior, conduct him to Bethulia, and hand him over to the Israelites.
11 Seine Diener ergriffen ihn, führten ihn aus dem Lager in die Ebene hinaus und brachten ihn in das Bergland hinauf. So gelangten sie zu den Quellen unterhalb von Betulia.	11 So the servants took him in custody and brought him out of the camp into the plain. From there they led him into the mountain region till they reached the springs below Bethulia.
12 Als die Männer in der Stadt sie erblickten, griffen sie zu den Waffen und liefen aus der Stadt hinaus auf den Gipfel des Berges; die mit Schleudern bewaffneten Männer versperrten den Gegnern den Aufstieg, indem sie Steine hinabschleuderten.	12 When the men of the city saw them, they seized their weapons and ran out of the city to the crest of the ridge; and all the slingers blocked the ascent of Holofernes' servants by hurling stones upon them.
13 Die Feinde suchten Deckung im Schutz der Bergwand; dann fesselten sie Achior, ließen ihn am Fuß des Abhangs liegen und kehrten zu ihrem Herrn zurück.	13 So they took cover below the mountain, where they bound Achior and left him lying at the foot of the mountain; then they returned to their lord.
14 Die Israeliten kamen aus ihrer Stadt herunter zu Achior und banden ihn los; sie führten ihn nach Betulia und brachten ihn vor die leitenden Männer ihrer Stadt.	14 The Israelites came down to him from their city, loosed him, and brought him into Bethulia. They haled him before the rulers of the city,
15 Das waren in jenen Tagen Usija, der Sohn Michas, aus dem Stamm Simeon, Kabri, der Sohn Otniëls, und Karmi, der Sohn Malkiëls.	15 who in those days were Uzziah, son of Micah of the tribe of Simeon, Chabris, son of Gothoniel, and Charmis, son of Melchiel.
16 Sie beriefen alle Ältesten der Stadt zu einer Versammlung; auch alle jungen Männer und die Frauen liefen herbei. Sie stellten Achior in die Mitte der versammelten Menge und Usija fragte ihn, was vorgefallen sei.	16 They then convened all the elders of the city; and all their young men, as well as the women, gathered in haste at the place of assembly. They placed Achior in the center of the throng, and Uzziah questioned him about what had happened.
17 Achior berichtete ihnen über die Verhandlungen im Kriegsrat des Holofernes und teilte ihnen alles mit, was er im Kreis der assyrischen Heerführer gesagt hatte, aber auch, was Holofernes prahlerisch gegen das Haus Israel geäußert hatte.	17 He replied by giving them an account of what was said in the council of Holofernes, and of all his own words among the Assyrian officers, and of all the boasting threats of Holofernes against the house of Israel.
18 Da warf sich das Volk nieder, betete zu Gott und rief:	18 At this the people fell prostrate and worshiped God; and they cried out:
19 Herr, Gott des Himmels, blick herab und sieh ihre Überheblichkeit, hab Erbarmen mit unserem gedemütigten Volk und schau heute gnädig auf die Schar derer, die dir geweiht sind.	19 "Lord, God of heaven, behold their arrogance! Have pity on the lowliness of our people, and look with favor this day on those who are consecrated to you."
20 Dann sprachen sie Achior Mut zu und lobten ihn sehr.	20 Then they reassured Achior and praised him highly.
21 Usija nahm ihn aus der Versammlung mit nach Hause und gab ein Gastmahl für die Ältesten. Während der ganzen Nacht aber riefen sie den Gott Israels um Hilfe an.	21 Uzziah brought him from the assembly to his home, where he gave a banquet for the elders. That whole night they called upon the God of Israel for help.
