1 Als die Philister gegen Israel kämpften, flohen die Israeliten vor ihnen. Viele waren gefallen und lagen erschlagen auf dem Gebirge Gilboa.	1 Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines, and fell slain on Mount Gilboa.
2 Die Philister verfolgten Saul und seine Söhne und erschlugen Sauls Söhne Jonatan, Abinadab und Malkischua.	2 And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchishua, the sons of Saul.
3 Um Saul selbst entstand ein schwerer Kampf. Die Bogenschützen hatten ihn getroffen und er war schwer verwundet.	3 The battle pressed hard upon Saul, and the archers found him; and he was wounded by the archers.
4 Da sagte Saul zu seinem Waffenträger: Zieh dein Schwert und durchbohre mich damit! Sonst kommen diese Unbeschnittenen und treiben mit mir ihren Mutwillen. Der Waffenträger wollte es nicht tun, denn er hatte große Angst. Da nahm Saul selbst das Schwert und stürzte sich hinein.	4 Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, "Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and make sport of me." But his armor-bearer would not; for he feared greatly. Therefore Saul took his own sword, and fell upon it.
5 Als der Waffenträger sah, dass Saul tot war, stürzte auch er sich in sein Schwert und starb.	5 And when his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword, and died.
6 So kamen Saul und seine drei Söhne ums Leben; sein ganzes Haus starb mit ihm.	6 Thus Saul died; he and his three sons and all his house died together.
7 Als die Israeliten in der Ebene (Jesreel) sahen, dass die Krieger Israels geflohen und dass Saul und seine Söhne tot waren, verließen sie ihre Städte und flohen. Dann kamen die Philister und besetzten die Städte.	7 And when all the men of Israel who were in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook their cities and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
8 Als am nächsten Tag die Philister kamen, um die Erschlagenen auszuplündern, fanden sie Saul und seine Söhne, die auf dem Gebirge Gilboa gefallen waren.	8 On the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.
9 Sie zogen ihn aus, nahmen seinen Kopf und seine Rüstung und schickten beides im Land der Philister umher, um ihren Götzen und dem Volk die Siegesnachricht zu übermitteln.	9 And they stripped him and took his head and his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines, to carry the good news to their idols and to the people.
10 Die Rüstung Sauls legten sie im Tempel ihrer Götter nieder. Seinen Kopf aber hefteten sie an den Tempel des Dagon.	10 And they put his armor in the temple of their gods, and fastened his head in the temple of Dagon.
11 Als die Einwohner von Jabesch-Gilead hörten, was die Philister mit Saul gemacht hatten,	11 But when all Jabesh-gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,
12 brachen alle kriegstüchtigen Männer auf, nahmen die Leiche Sauls und die Leichen seiner Söhne und brachten sie nach Jabesch. Sie begruben ihre Gebeine unter der Terebinthe in Jabesch und fasteten sieben Tage lang.	12 all the valiant men arose, and took away the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh. And they buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
13 So starb Saul wegen der Treulosigkeit, die er gegen den Herrn begangen hatte. Er hatte das Wort des Herrn nicht befolgt und den Totengeist befragt, um Auskunft zu suchen;	13 So Saul died for his unfaithfulness; he was unfaithful to the LORD in that he did not keep the command of the LORD, and also consulted a medium, seeking guidance,
14 an den Herrn aber hatte er sich nicht gewandt. Darum ließ er ihn sterben und übergab das Königtum David, dem Sohn Isais.	14 and did not seek guidance from the LORD. Therefore the LORD slew him, and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.
