1 Der Prophet Elija aus Tischbe in Gilead sprach zu Ahab: So wahr der Herr, der Gott Israels, lebt, in dessen Dienst ich stehe: in diesen Jahren sollen weder Tau noch Regen fallen, es sei denn auf mein Wort hin.	1 And Elijah the Tishbite, from the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord lives, the God of Israel, in whose sight I stand, there shall not be dew or rain during these years, except by the words of my mouth.”
2 Danach erging das Wort des Herrn an Elija:	2 And the word of the Lord came to him, saying:
3 Geh weg von hier, wende dich nach Osten und verbirg dich am Bach Kerit östlich des Jordan!	3 “Withdraw from here, and go toward the east, and hide at the torrent Cherith, which is opposite the Jordan.
4 Aus dem Bach sollst du trinken und den Raben habe ich befohlen, dass sie dich dort ernähren.	4 And there you shall drink from the torrent. And I have instructed the ravens to feed you there.”
5 Elija ging weg und tat, was der Herr befohlen hatte; er begab sich zum Bach Kerit östlich des Jordan und ließ sich dort nieder.	5 Therefore, he went and acted in accord with the word of the Lord. And going away, he settled by the torrent Cherith, which is opposite the Jordan.
6 Die Raben brachten ihm Brot und Fleisch am Morgen und ebenso Brot und Fleisch am Abend und er trank aus dem Bach.	6 And the ravens carried bread and flesh to him in the morning, and likewise bread and flesh in the evening. And he drank from the torrent.
7 Nach einiger Zeit aber vertrocknete der Bach; denn es fiel kein Regen im Land.	7 But after some days, the torrent dried up. For it had not rained upon the earth.
8 Da erging das Wort des Herrn an Elija:	8 Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying:
9 Mach dich auf und geh nach Sarepta, das zu Sidon gehört, und bleib dort! Ich habe dort einer Witwe befohlen, dich zu versorgen.	9 “Rise up, and go to Zarephath of the Sidonians, and dwell there. For I have instructed a widowed woman there to feed you.”
10 Er machte sich auf und ging nach Sarepta. Als er an das Stadttor kam, traf er dort eine Witwe, die Holz auflas. Er bat sie: Bring mir in einem Gefäß ein wenig Wasser zum Trinken!	10 He rose up and went away to Zarephath. And when he had arrived at the gate of the city, he saw the widowed woman collecting wood, and he called to her. And he said to her, “Give me a little water in a vessel, so that I may drink.”
11 Als sie wegging, um es zu holen, rief er ihr nach: Bring mir auch einen Bissen Brot mit!	11 And Elijah said to her, “Give your son to me.” And he took him from her bosom, and he carried him to an upper room, where he himself was staying. And he placed him on his own bed.
12 Doch sie sagte: So wahr der Herr, dein Gott, lebt: Ich habe nichts mehr vorrätig als eine Hand voll Mehl im Topf und ein wenig Öl im Krug. Ich lese hier ein paar Stücke Holz auf und gehe dann heim, um für mich und meinen Sohn etwas zuzubereiten. Das wollen wir noch essen und dann sterben.	12 And she responded: “As the Lord your God lives, I have no bread, except a handful of flour in a jar, and a little oil in a bottle. See, I am collecting a couple of sticks, so that I may go in and make it for myself and my son, so that we may eat it and die.”
13 Elija entgegnete ihr: Fürchte dich nicht! Geh heim und tu, was du gesagt hast. Nur mache zuerst für mich ein kleines Gebäck und bring es zu mir heraus! Danach kannst du für dich und deinen Sohn etwas zubereiten;	13 And Elijah said to her: “Do not be afraid. But go and do as you have said. Yet truly, first make for me, from the same flour, a little bread baked under ashes, and bring it to me. Then afterward, make some for yourself and for your son.
14 denn so spricht der Herr, der Gott Israels: Der Mehltopf wird nicht leer werden und der Ölkrug nicht versiegen bis zu dem Tag, an dem der Herr wieder Regen auf den Erdboden sendet.	14 For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: ‘The jar of flour will not fail, nor the bottle of oil be diminished, until the day when the Lord will grant rain upon the face of the earth.’ ”
15 Sie ging und tat, was Elija gesagt hatte. So hatte sie mit ihm und ihrem Sohn viele Tage zu essen.	15 She went and acted in accord with the word of Elijah. And he ate, and she and her household ate. And from that day,
16 Der Mehltopf wurde nicht leer und der Ölkrug versiegte nicht, wie der Herr durch Elija versprochen hatte.	16 the jar of flour did not fail, and the bottle of oil was not diminished, in accord with the word of the Lord, which he had spoken by the hand of Elijah.
17 Nach einiger Zeit erkrankte der Sohn der Witwe, der das Haus gehörte. Die Krankheit verschlimmerte sich so, dass zuletzt kein Atem mehr in ihm war.	17 Now it happened that, after these things, the son of the woman who was the mother of the family became ill. And the sickness was very powerful, so that no breath remained in him.
18 Da sagte sie zu Elija: Was habe ich mit dir zu schaffen, Mann Gottes? Du bist nur zu mir gekommen, um an meine Sünde zu erinnern und meinem Sohn den Tod zu bringen.	18 Therefore, she said to Elijah: “What is there between you and me, O man of God? Have you entered to me, so that my iniquities would be remembered, and so that you would put to death my son?”
19 Er antwortete ihr: Gib mir deinen Sohn! Und er nahm ihn von ihrem Schoß, trug ihn in das Obergemach hinauf, in dem er wohnte, und legte ihn auf sein Bett.
20 Dann rief er zum Herrn und sagte: Herr, mein Gott, willst du denn auch über die Witwe, in deren Haus ich wohne, Unheil bringen und ihren Sohn sterben lassen?	20 And he cried out to the Lord, and he said, “O Lord, my God, have you even afflicted the widow by whom I am, in a sense, sustained, so that you would put to death her son?”
21 Hierauf streckte er sich dreimal über den Knaben hin, rief zum Herrn und flehte: Herr, mein Gott, lass doch das Leben in diesen Knaben zurückkehren!	21 And he stretched himself out beside the boy three times. And he cried out to the Lord and said, “O Lord, my God, let the soul of this boy, I beg you, return to his body.”
22 Der Herr erhörte das Gebet Elijas. Das Leben kehrte in den Knaben zurück und er lebte wieder auf.	22 And the Lord heeded the voice of Elijah. And the soul of the boy returned to him, and he revived.
23 Elija nahm ihn, brachte ihn vom Obergemach in das Haus hinab und gab ihn seiner Mutter zurück mit den Worten: Sieh, dein Sohn lebt.	23 And Elijah took the boy, and he brought him down from the upper room to the lower part of the house. And he gave him to his mother. And he said to her, “See, your son lives.”
24 Da sagte die Frau zu Elija: Jetzt weiß ich, dass du ein Mann Gottes bist und dass das Wort des Herrn wirklich in deinem Mund ist.	24 And the woman said to Elijah: “By this, I now realize that you are a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is true.”
