DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
For I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea.1 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea,
And all in Moses were baptized, in the cloud, and in the sea:2 and all of them were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.
And did all eat the same spiritual food,3 All ate the same spiritual food,
And all drank the same spiritual drink; (and they drank of the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ.)4 and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank from a spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was the Christ.
But with most of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the desert.5 Yet God was not pleased with most of them, for they were struck down in the desert.
Now these things were done in a figure of us, that we should not covet evil things as they also coveted.6 These things happened as examples for us, so that we might not desire evil things, as they did.
Neither become ye idolaters, as some of them, as it is written: The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.7 And do not become idolaters, as some of them did, as it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to revel."
Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed fornication, and there fell in one day three and twenty thousand.8 Let us not indulge in immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell within a single day.
Neither let us tempt Christ: as some of them tempted, and perished by the serpents.9 Let us not test Christ as some of them did, and suffered death by serpents.
Neither do you murmur: as some of them murmured, and were destroyed by the destroyer.10 Do not grumble as some of them did, and suffered death by the destroyer.
Now all these things happened to them in figure: and they are written for our correction, upon whom the ends of the world are come.11 These things happened to them as an example, and they have been written down as a warning to us, upon whom the end of the ages has come.
Wherefore he that thinketh himself to stand, let him take heed lest he fall.12 Therefore, whoever thinks he is standing secure should take care not to fall.
Let no temptation take hold on you, but such as is human. And God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that which you are able: but will make also with temptation issue, that you may be able to bear it.13 No trial has come to you but what is human. God is faithful and will not let you be tried beyond your strength; but with the trial he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to bear it.
Wherefore, my dearly beloved, fly from the service of idols.14 Therefore, my beloved, avoid idolatry.
I speak as to wise men: judge ye yourselves what I say.15 I am speaking as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I am saying.
The chalice of benediction, which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ ? And the bread, which we break, is it not the partaking of the body of the Lord ?16 The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?
For we, being many, are one bread, one body, all that partake of one bread.17 Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.
Behold Israel according to the flesh: are not they, that eat of the sacrifices, partakers of the altar ?18 Look at Israel according to the flesh; are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar?
What then ? Do I say, that what is offered in sacrifice to idols, is any thing ? Or, that the idol is any thing ?19 So what am I saying? That meat sacrificed to idols is anything? Or that an idol is anything?
But the things which the heathens sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God. And I would not that you should be made partakers with devils.20 No, I mean that what they sacrifice, (they sacrifice) to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to become participants with demons.
You cannot drink the chalice of the Lord, and the chalice of devils: you cannot be partakers of the table of the Lord, and of the table of devils.21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and also the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and of the table of demons.
Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy ? Are we stronger than he? All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient.22 Or are we provoking the Lord to jealous anger? Are we stronger than he?
All things are lawful for me, but all things do not edify.23 "Everything is lawful," but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is lawful," but not everything builds up.
Let no man seek his own, but that which is another's.24 No one should seek his own advantage, but that of his neighbor.
Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, eat; asking no question for conscience' sake.25 Eat anything sold in the market, without raising questions on grounds of conscience,
The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.26 for "the earth and its fullness are the Lord's."
If any of them that believe not, invite you, and you will be willing to go; eat of any thing that is set before you, asking no question for conscience' sake.27 If an unbeliever invites you and you want to go, eat whatever is placed before you, without raising questions on grounds of conscience.
But if any man say: This has been sacrificed to idols, do not eat of it for his sake that told it, and for conscience' sake.28 But if someone says to you, "This was offered in sacrifice," do not eat it on account of the one who called attention to it and on account of conscience;
Conscience, I say, not thy own, but the other's. For why is my liberty judged by another man's conscience ?29 I mean not your own conscience, but the other's. For why should my freedom be determined by someone else's conscience?
If I partake with thanksgiving, why am I evil spoken of, for that for which I give thanks ?30 If I partake thankfully, why am I reviled for that over which I give thanks?
Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatsoever else you do, do all to the glory of God.31 So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.
Be without offence to the Jews, and to the Gentiles, and to the church of God:32 Avoid giving offense, whether to Jews or Greeks or the church of God,
As I also in all things please all men, not seeking that which is profitable to myself, but to many, that may be saved.33 just as I try to please everyone in every way, not seeking my own benefit but that of the many, that they may be saved.
