| 1 Davi passou em revista as tropas que estavam com ele, e pôs à sua frente chefes de milhares e de centenas. | 1 Then David mustered the men who were with him, and set over them commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds. |
| 2 Depois dividiu o exército em três grupos: confiou um terço a Joab, um terço ao seu irmão Abisai, filho de Sarvia, e um terço a Etai, o geteu. E disse às tropas: Eu também marcharei convosco. | 2 And David sent forth the army, one third under the command of Joab, one third under the command of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and one third under the command of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said to the men, "I myself will also go out with you." |
| 3 Mas o povo respondeu-lhe: Não, tu não irás; pois se fugíssemos, não dariam atenção a isso, e mesmo que morra a metade de nós, isso não lhes importaria; tu, porém, vales por dez mil de nós. É melhor que fiques na cidade, para poder vir em nosso socorro. | 3 But the men said, "You shall not go out. For if we flee, they will not care about us. If half of us die, they will not care about us. But you are worth ten thousand of us; therefore it is better that you send us help from the city." |
| 4 Farei, disse o rei, o que bem vos parecer. Postou-se então junto da porta, enquanto todo o exército saía formado em esquadrões de cem e de mil. | 4 The king said to them, "Whatever seems best to you I will do." So the king stood at the side of the gate, while all the army marched out by hundreds and by thousands. |
| 5 O rei deu esta ordem a Joab, a Abisai e a Etai: Por favor, poupai-me o jovem Absalão! Todo o povo ouviu a ordem que o rei deu aos chefes a respeito de Absalão. | 5 And the king ordered Joab and Abishai and Ittai, "Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom." And all the people heard when the king gave orders to all the commanders about Absalom. |
| 6 Saiu o exército à campanha contra Israel e travou-se o combate na floresta de Efraim. | 6 So the army went out into the field against Israel; and the battle was fought in the forest of Ephraim. |
| 7 Os israelitas foram batidos pela gente de Davi, e houve naquele dia uma grande carnificina de vinte mil homens. | 7 And the men of Israel were defeated there by the servants of David, and the slaughter there was great on that day, twenty thousand men. |
| 8 O combate estendeu-se por toda a região, devorando a floresta naquele dia mais homens do que a espada. | 8 The battle spread over the face of all the country; and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword. |
| 9 Absalão encontrou-se de repente em presença dos homens de Davi. Montava uma mula, e esta enfiou-se sob a folhagem espessa de um grande carvalho. A cabeça de Absalão prendeu-se nos galhos da árvore, e ele ficou suspenso entre o céu e a terra, enquanto a mula em que montava passava adiante. | 9 And Absalom chanced to meet the servants of David. Absalom was riding upon his mule, and the mule went under the thick branches of a great oak, and his head caught fast in the oak, and he was left hanging between heaven and earth, while the mule that was under him went on. |
| 10 Vendo isso, um homem informou a Joab, dizendo: Eu vi Absalão suspenso a um carvalho. | 10 And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, "Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak." |
| 11 Se o viste, respondeu Joab ao mensageiro, por que não o abateste no mesmo lugar? Eu me sentiria no dever de dar-te dez siclos de prata e um cinturão. | 11 Joab said to the man who told him, "What, you saw him! Why then did you not strike him there to the ground? I would have been glad to give you ten pieces of silver and a girdle." |
| 12 O homem respondeu: Ainda que me pusessem nas mãos mil siclos de prata, eu não levantaria a mão contra o filho do rei, porque o rei ordenou a ti, a Abisai e a Etai, em nossa presença, que lhe poupassem o jovem Absalão. | 12 But the man said to Joab, "Even if I felt in my hand the weight of a thousand pieces of silver, I would not put forth my hand against the king's son; for in our hearing the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittai, 'For my sake protect the young man Absalom.' |
| 13 E se eu tivesse cometido esse atentado contra a vida do jovem, nada se ocultaria ao rei, e tu mesmo te terias esquivado. | 13 On the other hand, if I had dealt treacherously against his life (and there is nothing hidden from the king), then you yourself would have stood aloof." |
| 14 Joab disse: Não tenho tempo a perder contigo. Tomou, então, três dardos na mão e plantou-os no coração de Absalão. E estando ele ainda vivo no carvalho, | 14 Joab said, "I will not waste time like this with you." And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them into the heart of Absalom, while he was still alive in the oak. |
| 15 dez jovens escudeiros de Joab cercaram-no e deram-lhe os últimos golpes. | 15 And ten young men, Joab's armor-bearers, surrounded Absalom and struck him, and killed him. |
| 16 Joab tocou então a trombeta e o exército cessou de perseguir Israel, porque Joab deteve o povo. | 16 Then Joab blew the trumpet, and the troops came back from pursuing Israel; for Joab restrained them. |
| 17 Tomaram Absalão e jogaram-no numa grande fossa no interior da floresta, erguendo em seguida sobre ele um enorme monte de pedras. Entrementes, todo o Israel fugira, indo cada qual para a sua casa. | 17 And they took Absalom, and threw him into a great pit in the forest, and raised over him a very great heap of stones; and all Israel fled every one to his own home. |
| 18 Ora, Absalão quando ainda vivia, mandara erigir para si o monumento que se encontra no vale do Rei, porque dizia: Não tenho filhos para perpetuar a memória de meu nome. E deu o seu próprio nome ao monumento que se chama ainda hoje o monumento de Absalão. | 18 Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and set up for himself the pillar which is in the King's Valley, for he said, "I have no son to keep my name in remembrance"; he called the pillar after his own name, and it is called Absalom's monument to this day. |
| 19 Aquimaas, filho de Sadoc, disse: Vou correndo anunciar ao rei a boa nova de que o Senhor lhe fez justiça, livrando-o de seus inimigos. | 19 Then said Ahima-az the son of Zadok, "Let me run, and carry tidings to the king that the LORD has delivered him from the power of his enemies." |
| 20 Mas Joab disse-lhe: Não lhe levarás hoje essa notícia, mas outro dia; não hoje, porque morreu o filho do rei. | 20 And Joab said to him, "You are not to carry tidings today; you may carry tidings another day, but today you shall carry no tidings, because the king's son is dead." |
| 21 E dirigindo-se a um cusita: Vai ter com o rei, disse-lhe, e anuncia-lhe o que viste. O cusita prostrou-se diante de Joab e partiu correndo. | 21 Then Joab said to the Cushite, "Go, tell the king what you have seen." The Cushite bowed before Joab, and ran. |
| 22 Aquimaas, porém, filho de Sadoc, insistiu: Seja como for, mas deixa-me ir também atrás do cusita. E Joab: Por que queres correr, meu filho? Essa mensagem de nada te aproveitaria. | 22 Then Ahima-az the son of Zadok said again to Joab, "Come what may, let me also run after the Cushite." And Joab said, "Why will you run, my son, seeing that you will have no reward for the tidings?" |
| 23 Em todo caso, eu correrei. Corre, disse-lhe Joab. Aquimaas foi correndo pelo caminho da planície e passou à frente do cusita. | 23 "Come what may," he said, "I will run." So he said to him, "Run." Then Ahima-az ran by the way of the plain, and outran the Cushite. |
| 24 Davi estava sentado entre as duas portas. A sentinela que tinha subido ao terraço da porta, sobre a muralha, levantou os olhos e viu um homem que vinha correndo sozinho. | 24 Now David was sitting between the two gates; and the watchman went up to the roof of the gate by the wall, and when he lifted up his eyes and looked, he saw a man running alone. |
| 25 Gritando, anunciou-o ao rei, que disse: Se ele vem só, traz alguma boa nova. Entretanto, o homem se aproximava. | 25 And the watchman called out and told the king. And the king said, "If he is alone, there are tidings in his mouth." And he came apace, and drew near. |
| 26 A sentinela viu então outro homem que corria; e gritou do alto da porta: Vejo outro homem que vem correndo sozinho. Também esse traz alguma boa nova. | 26 And the watchman saw another man running; and the watchman called to the gate and said, "See, another man running alone!" The king said, "He also brings tidings." |
| 27 A sentinela: Pela maneira de correr do primeiro, só pode ser Aquimaas, filho de Sadoc. O rei: É um homem de bem: traz boas notícias. | 27 And the watchman said, "I think the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahima-az the son of Zadok." And the king said, "He is a good man, and comes with good tidings." |
| 28 Aquimaas, chegando, disse ao rei: Salve! e prostrou-se diante dele com a face por terra. Depois ajuntou: Bendito seja o Senhor, teu Deus, que te entregou os homens que ergueram a mão contra o rei, meu senhor. | 28 Then Ahima-az cried out to the king, "All is well." And he bowed before the king with his face to the earth, and said, "Blessed be the LORD your God, who has delivered up the men who raised their hand against my lord the king." |
| 29 O rei disse: Tudo vai bem para o jovem Absalão? Eu vi um grande tumulto, respondeu Aquimaas, no momento em que Joab enviava o teu servo, mas ignoro o que se tenha passado. | 29 And the king said, "Is it well with the young man Absalom?" Ahima-az answered, "When Joab sent your servant, I saw a great tumult, but I do not know what it was." |
| 30 O rei disse-lhe: Põe-te aqui ao lado e espera. Ele afastou-se e esperou ali. | 30 And the king said, "Turn aside, and stand here." So he turned aside, and stood still. |
| 31 Então chegou o cusita, dizendo: Saiba o rei, meu senhor, da boa nova: O Senhor te fez hoje justiça contra todos os que se tinham revoltado contra ti. | 31 And behold, the Cushite came; and the Cushite said, "Good tidings for my lord the king! For the LORD has delivered you this day from the power of all who rose up against you." |
| 32 O rei disse ao cusita: Tudo vai bem para o jovem Absalão? E o cusita respondeu: Sejam como esse jovem os inimigos do rei, meu senhor, e todos os que se levantam contra ti para te fazer mal! | 32 The king said to the Cushite, "Is it well with the young man Absalom?" And the Cushite answered, "May the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rise up against you for evil, be like that young man." |
| 33 Então o rei comoveu-se, subiu ao quarto que estava por cima da porta e pôs-se a chorar. E enquanto ia, dizia assim: Meu filho Absalão, meu filho, meu filho Absalão! Por que não morri em teu lugar? Absalão, meu filho, meu filho! | 33 And the king was deeply moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept; and as he went, he said, "O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my son, my son!" |
