CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINSAGRADA BIBLIA
Since, indeed, many have attempted to set in order a narrative of the things that have been completed among us,1 Muitos empreenderam compor uma história dos acontecimentos que se realizaram entre nós,
just as they have been handed on to those of us who from the beginning saw the same and were ministers of the word,2 como no-los transmitiram aqueles que foram desde o princípio testemunhas oculares e que se tornaram ministros da palavra.
so it seemed good to me also, having diligently followed everything from the beginning, to write to you, in an orderly manner, most excellent Theophilus,3 Também a mim me pareceu bem, depois de haver diligentemente investigado tudo desde o princípio, escrevê-los para ti segundo a ordem, excelentíssimo Teófilo,
so that you might know the truthfulness of those words by which you have been instructed.4 para que conheças a solidez daqueles ensinamentos que tens recebido.
There was, in the days of Herod, king of Judea, a certain priest named Zechariah, of the section of Abijah, and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.5 Nos tempos de Herodes, rei da Judéia, houve um sacerdote por nome Zacarias, da classe de Abias; sua mulher, descendente de Aarão, chamava-se Isabel.
Now they were both just before God, progressing in all of the commandments and the justifications of the Lord without blame.6 Ambos eram justos diante de Deus e observavam irrepreensivelmente todos os mandamentos e preceitos do Senhor.
And they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they both had become advanced in years.7 Mas não tinham filho, porque Isabel era estéril e ambos de idade avançada.
Then it happened that, when he was exercising the priesthood before God, in the order of his section,8 Ora, exercendo Zacarias diante de Deus as funções de sacerdote, na ordem da sua classe,
according to the custom of the priesthood, the lot fell so that he would offer incense, entering into the temple of the Lord.9 coube-lhe por sorte, segundo o costume em uso entre os sacerdotes, entrar no santuário do Senhor e aí oferecer o perfume.
And the entire multitude of the people was praying outside, at the hour of incense.10 Todo o povo estava de fora, à hora da oferenda do perfume.
Then there appeared to him an Angel of the Lord, standing at the right of the altar of incense.11 Apareceu-lhe então um anjo do Senhor, em pé, à direita do altar do perfume.
And upon seeing him, Zechariah was disturbed, and fear fell over him.12 Vendo-o, Zacarias ficou perturbado, e o temor assaltou-o.
But the Angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth shall bear a son to you. And you shall call his name John.13 Mas o anjo disse-lhe: Não temas, Zacarias, porque foi ouvida a tua oração: Isabel, tua mulher, dar-te-á um filho, e chamá-lo-ás João.
And there will be joy and exultation for you, and many will rejoice in his nativity.14 Ele será para ti motivo de gozo e alegria, e muitos se alegrarão com o seu nascimento;
For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he will not drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.15 porque será grande diante do Senhor e não beberá vinho nem cerveja, e desde o ventre de sua mãe será cheio do Espírito Santo;
And he will convert many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God.16 ele converterá muitos dos filhos de Israel ao Senhor, seu Deus,
And he will go before him with the spirit and power of Elijah, so that he may turn the hearts of the fathers to the sons, and the incredulous to the prudence of the just, so as to prepare for the Lord a completed people.”17 e irá adiante de Deus com o espírito e poder de Elias para reconduzir os corações dos pais aos filhos e os rebeldes à sabedoria dos justos, para preparar ao Senhor um povo bem disposto.
And Zechariah said to the Angel: “How may I know this? For I am elderly, and my wife is advanced in years.”18 Zacarias perguntou ao anjo: Donde terei certeza disto? Pois sou velho e minha mulher é de idade avançada.
And in response, the Angel said to him: “I am Gabriel, who stands before God, and I have been sent to speak to you, and to proclaim these things to you.19 O anjo respondeu-lhe: Eu sou Gabriel, que assisto diante de Deus, e fui enviado para te falar e te trazer esta feliz nova.
And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak, until the day on which these things shall be, because you have not believed my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.”20 Eis que ficarás mudo e não poderás falar até o dia em que estas coisas acontecerem, visto que não deste crédito às minhas palavras, que se hão de cumprir a seu tempo.
And the people were waiting for Zechariah. And they wondered why he was being delayed in the temple.21 No entanto, o povo estava esperando Zacarias; e admirava-se de ele se demorar tanto tempo no santuário.
Then, when he came out, he was unable to speak to them. And they realized that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he was making signs to them, but he remained mute.22 Ao sair, não lhes podia falar, e compreenderam que tivera no santuário uma visão. Ele lhes explicava isto por acenos; e permaneceu mudo.
And it happened that, after the days of his office were completed, he went away to his house.23 Decorridos os dias do seu ministério, retirou-se para sua casa.
Then, after those days, his wife Elizabeth conceived, and she hid herself for five months, saying:24 Algum tempo depois Isabel, sua mulher, concebeu; e por cinco meses se ocultava, dizendo:
“For the Lord did this for me, at the time when he decided to take away my reproach among men.”25 Eis a graça que o Senhor me fez, quando lançou os olhos sobre mim para tirar o meu opróbrio dentre os homens.
Then, in the sixth month, the Angel Gabriel was sent by God, to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,26 No sexto mês, o anjo Gabriel foi enviado por Deus a uma cidade da Galiléia, chamada Nazaré,
to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the name of the virgin was Mary.27 a uma virgem desposada com um homem que se chamava José, da casa de Davi e o nome da virgem era Maria.
And upon entering, the Angel said to her: “Hail, full of grace. The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women.”28 Entrando, o anjo disse-lhe: Ave, cheia de graça, o Senhor é contigo.
And when she had heard this, she was disturbed by his words, and she considered what kind of greeting this might be.29 Perturbou-se ela com estas palavras e pôs-se a pensar no que significaria semelhante saudação.
And the Angel said to her: “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found grace with God.30 O anjo disse-lhe: Não temas, Maria, pois encontraste graça diante de Deus.
Behold, you shall conceive in your womb, and you shall bear a son, and you shall call his name: JESUS.31 Eis que conceberás e darás à luz um filho, e lhe porás o nome de Jesus.
He will be great, and he will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father. And he will reign in the house of Jacob for eternity.32 Ele será grande e chamar-se-á Filho do Altíssimo, e o Senhor Deus lhe dará o trono de seu pai Davi; e reinará eternamente na casa de Jacó,
And his kingdom shall have no end.”33 e o seu reino não terá fim.
Then Mary said to the Angel, “How shall this be done, since I do not know man?”34 Maria perguntou ao anjo: Como se fará isso, pois não conheço homem?
And in response, the Angel said to her: “The Holy Spirit will pass over you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. And because of this also, the Holy One who will be born of you shall be called the Son of God.35 Respondeu-lhe o anjo: O Espírito Santo descerá sobre ti, e a força do Altíssimo te envolverá com a sua sombra. Por isso o ente santo que nascer de ti será chamado Filho de Deus.
And behold, your cousin Elizabeth has herself also conceived a son, in her old age. And this is the sixth month for her who is called barren.36 Também Isabel, tua parenta, até ela concebeu um filho na sua velhice; e já está no sexto mês aquela que é tida por estéril,
For no word will be impossible with God.”37 porque a Deus nenhuma coisa é impossível.
Then Mary said: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word.” And the Angel departed from her.38 Então disse Maria: Eis aqui a serva do Senhor. Faça-se em mim segundo a tua palavra. E o anjo afastou-se dela.
And in those days, Mary, rising up, traveled quickly into the hill country, to a city of Judah.39 Naqueles dias, Maria se levantou e foi às pressas às montanhas, a uma cidade de Judá.
And she entered into the house of Zechariah, and she greeted Elizabeth.40 Entrou em casa de Zacarias e saudou Isabel.
And it happened that, as Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.41 Ora, apenas Isabel ouviu a saudação de Maria, a criança estremeceu no seu seio; e Isabel ficou cheia do Espírito Santo.
And she cried out with a loud voice and said: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.42 E exclamou em alta voz: Bendita és tu entre as mulheres e bendito é o fruto do teu ventre.
And how does this concern me, so that the mother of my Lord would come to me?43 Donde me vem esta honra de vir a mim a mãe de meu Senhor?
For behold, as the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.44 Pois assim que a voz de tua saudação chegou aos meus ouvidos, a criança estremeceu de alegria no meu seio.
And blessed are you who believed, for the things that were spoken to you by the Lord shall be accomplished.”45 Bem-aventurada és tu que creste, pois se hão de cumprir as coisas que da parte do Senhor te foram ditas!
And Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord.46 E Maria disse: Minha alma glorifica ao Senhor,
And my spirit leaps for joy in God my Saviour.47 meu espírito exulta de alegria em Deus, meu Salvador,
For he has looked with favor on the humility of his handmaid. For behold, from this time, all generations shall call me blessed.48 porque olhou para sua pobre serva. Por isto, desde agora, me proclamarão bem-aventurada todas as gerações,
For he who is great has done great things for me, and holy is his name.49 porque realizou em mim maravilhas aquele que é poderoso e cujo nome é Santo.
And his mercy is from generation to generations for those who fear him.50 Sua misericórdia se estende, de geração em geração, sobre os que o temem.
He has accomplished powerful deeds with his arm. He has scattered the arrogant in the intentions of their heart.51 Manifestou o poder do seu braço: desconcertou os corações dos soberbos.
He has deposed the powerful from their seat, and he has exalted the humble.52 Derrubou do trono os poderosos e exaltou os humildes.
He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.53 Saciou de bens os indigentes e despediu de mãos vazias os ricos.
He has taken up his servant Israel, mindful of his mercy,54 Acolheu a Israel, seu servo, lembrado da sua misericórdia,
just as he spoke to our fathers: to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”55 conforme prometera a nossos pais, em favor de Abraão e sua posteridade, para sempre.
Then Mary stayed with her for about three months. And she returned to her own house.56 Maria ficou com Isabel cerca de três meses. Depois voltou para casa.
Now the time for Elizabeth to give birth arrived, and she brought forth a son.57 Completando-se para Isabel o tempo de dar à luz, teve um filho.
And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy with her, and so they congratulated her.58 Os seus vizinhos e parentes souberam que o Senhor lhe manifestara a sua misericórdia, e congratulavam-se com ela.
And it happened that, on the eighth day, they arrived to circumcise the boy, and they called him by his father’s name, Zechariah.59 No oitavo dia, foram circuncidar o menino e o queriam chamar pelo nome de seu pai, Zacarias.
And in response, his mother said: “Not so. Instead, he shall be called John.”60 Mas sua mãe interveio: Não, disse ela, ele se chamará João.
And they said to her, “But there is no one among your relatives who is called by that name.”61 Replicaram-lhe: Não há ninguém na tua família que se chame por este nome.
Then they made signs to his father, as to what he wanted him to be called.62 E perguntavam por acenos ao seu pai como queria que se chamasse.
And requesting a writing tablet, he wrote, saying: “His name is John.” And they all wondered.63 Ele, pedindo uma tabuinha, escreveu nela as palavras: João é o seu nome. Todos ficaram pasmados.
Then, at once, his mouth was opened, and his tongue loosened, and he spoke, blessing God.64 E logo se lhe abriu a boca e soltou-se-lhe a língua e ele falou, bendizendo a Deus.
And fear fell upon all of their neighbors. And all these words were made known throughout all the hill country of Judea.65 O temor apoderou-se de todos os seus vizinhos; o fato divulgou-se por todas as montanhas da Judéia.
And all those who heard it stored it up in their heart, saying: “What do you think this boy will be?” And indeed, the hand of the Lord was with him.66 Todos os que o ouviam conservavam-no no coração, dizendo: Que será este menino? Porque a mão do Senhor estava com ele.
And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit. And he prophesied, saying:67 Zacarias, seu pai, ficou cheio do Espírito Santo e profetizou, nestes termos:
“Blessed is the Lord God of Israel. For he has visited and has wrought the redemption of his people.68 Bendito seja o Senhor, Deus de Israel, porque visitou e resgatou o seu povo,
And he has raised up a horn of salvation for us, in the house of David his servant,69 e suscitou-nos um poderoso Salvador, na casa de Davi, seu servo
just as he spoke by the mouth of his holy Prophets, who are from ages past:70 {como havia anunciado, desde os primeiros tempos, mediante os seus santos profetas},
salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all those who hate us,71 para nos livrar dos nossos inimigos e das mãos de todos os que nos odeiam.
to accomplish mercy with our fathers, and to call to mind his holy testament,72 Assim exerce a sua misericórdia com nossos pais, e se recorda de sua santa aliança,
the oath, which he swore to Abraham, our father, that he would grant to us,73 segundo o juramento que fez a nosso pai Abraão: de nos conceder que, sem temor,
so that, having been freed from the hand of our enemies, we may serve him without fear,74 libertados de mãos inimigas, possamos servi-lo
in holiness and in justice before him, throughout all our days.75 em santidade e justiça, em sua presença, todos os dias da nossa vida.
And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High. For you will go before the face of the Lord: to prepare his ways,76 E tu, menino, serás chamado profeta do Altíssimo, porque precederás o Senhor e lhe prepararás o caminho,
to give knowledge of salvation to his people for the remission of their sins,77 para dar ao seu povo conhecer a salvação, pelo perdão dos pecados.
through the heart of the mercy of our God, by which, descending from on high, he has visited us,78 Graças à ternura e misericórdia de nosso Deus, que nos vai trazer do alto a visita do Sol nascente,
to illuminate those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to direct our feet in the way of peace.”79 que há de iluminar os que jazem nas trevas e na sombra da morte e dirigir os nossos passos no caminho da paz.
And the child grew, and he was strengthened in spirit. And he was in the wilderness, until the day of his manifestation to Israel.80 O menino foi crescendo e fortificava-se em espírito, e viveu nos desertos até o dia em que se apresentou diante de Israel.
