John 16

1 "I have told you this so that you may not fall away.	1 Vi ho detto queste cose perché non vi scandalizziate.
2 They will expel you from the synagogues; in fact, the hour is coming when everyone who kills you will think he is offering worship to God.	2 Vi scacceranno dalle sinagoghe; anzi, viene l’ora che chiunque vi uccide crederà di rendere culto a Dio.
3 They will do this because they have not known either the Father or me.	3 E faranno questo perché non hanno conosciuto né il Padre né me.
4 I have told you this so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you. "I did not tell you this from the beginning, because I was with you.	4 Ma vi ho detto queste cose affinché, quando verrà la loro ora, ve ne ricordiate che io ve l’ho detto. Queste cose non ve le ho dette fin dal principio perché ero con voi.
5 But now I am going to the one who sent me, and not one of you asks me, 'Where are you going?'	5 Adesso, però, vado da colui che mi ha mandato e nessuno di voi mi domanda: “Dove vai?”.
6 But because I told you this, grief has filled your hearts.	6 Invece, perché vi ho detto queste cose, la tristezza vi ha riempito il cuore.
7 But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.	7 Tuttavia, io vi dico la verità: vi conviene che io vada, perché se non vado non verrà a voi il Consolatore; se, invece, io vado, ve lo manderò.
8 And when he comes he will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and condemnation:	8 E, venuto, egli confonderà il mondo quanto a peccato, a giustizia e a giudizio:
9 sin, because they do not believe in me;	9 a peccato, perché non credono;
10 righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me;	10 a giustizia, perché vado al Padre e non mi vedrete più;
11 condemnation, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.	11 a giudizio, perché il principe di questo mondo è condannato.
12 "I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now.	12 Ho ancora molte cose da dirvi, ma adesso non siete in condizione di portarle.
13 But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming.	13 Quando, però, verrà lui, lo Spirito di verità, vi introdurrà a tutta intera la verità; egli, infatti, non parlerà per conto suo, ma dirà quanto ascolta, e vi annunzierà le cose da venire.
14 He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.	14 Egli mi glorificherà, perché prenderà del mio per comunicarvelo.
15 Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.	15 Tutto ciò che ha il Padre è mio; ecco perché vi ho detto che prenderà del mio per comunicarvelo.
16 "A little while and you will no longer see me, and again a little while later and you will see me."	16 Ancora un po’ e non mi vedrete più, e ancora un po’ e mi rivedrete».
17 So some of his disciples said to one another, "What does this mean that he is saying to us, 'A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?"	17 Allora, alcuni dei suoi discepoli dissero fra loro: «Che è codesto che ci dice: “Ancora un po’ e non mi vedrete più, e ancora un o’ e mi rivedrete” e “Vado al Padre”?»
18 So they said, "What is this 'little while' (of which he speaks)? We do not know what he means."	18 Dicevano, dunque: «Che vuol dire: “Un po’”? Non sappiamo ciò che vuol dire».
19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, "Are you discussing with one another what I said, 'A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me'?	19 Gesù, conoscendo che volevano interrogarlo, disse loro: «Vi chiedete l’un l’altro che significa ciò che ho detto: “Un po’ e non mi vedrete, e ancora un po’ e mi rivedrete”.
20 Amen, amen, I say to you, you will weep and mourn, while the world rejoices; you will grieve, but your grief will become joy.	20 In verità, in verità vi dico: voi piangerete e farete cordoglio, ma il mondo si rallegrerà; voi vi rattristerete, ma la vostra tristezza si muterà in gioia.
21 When a woman is in labor, she is in anguish because her hour has arrived; but when she has given birth to a child, she no longer remembers the pain because of her joy that a child has been born into the world.	21 Quando la donna partorisce è triste perché è giunta la sua ora, ma quando ha partorito il bambino, dimentica l’ambascia per la gioia che è venuto al mondo un uomo.
22 So you also are now in anguish. But I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.	22 Anche voi siete adesso tristi, ma io vi rivedrò e il vostro cuore gioirà, e la vostra gioia nessuno ve la potrà rapire.
23 On that day you will not question me about anything. Amen, amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you.	23 In quel giorno, non mi farete più nessuna domanda. In verità, in verità vi dico: qualunque cosa domanderete al Padre, egli ve la darà nel mio nome.
24 Until now you have not asked anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.	24 Finora non avete chiesto nulla nel mio nome! Chiedete e riceverete, affinché la vostra gioia sia perfetta.
25 "I have told you this in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures but I will tell you clearly about the Father.	25 Vi ho parlato di queste cose in parabole: viene l’ora in cui non vi parlerò più in parabole, ma vi intratterrò apertamente sul Padre mio.
26 On that day you will ask in my name, and I do not tell you that I will ask the Father for you.	26 In quel giorno, voi chiederete nel mio nome, e non vi dico che io pregherò il Padre per voi:
27 For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came from God.	27 lo stesso Padre, infatti, vi ama, perché voi mi avete amato e avete creduto che io sono uscito da Dio.
28 I came from the Father and have come into the world. Now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father."	28 Sono uscito dal Padre e sono venuto nel mondo; adesso lascio il mondo e torno al Padre».
29 His disciples said, "Now you are talking plainly, and not in any figure of speech.	29 Dicono i suoi discepoli: «Ecco, adesso parli apertamente e non dici alcuna parabola.
30 Now we realize that you know everything and that you do not need to have anyone question you. Because of this we believe that you came from God."	30 Ora sappiamo che sai tutto, e non hai bisogno che qualcuno ti interroghi: perciò crediamo che sei uscito da Dio».
31 Jesus answered them, "Do you believe now?	31 Risponde loro Gesù: «Adesso credete?
32 Behold, the hour is coming and has arrived when each of you will be scattered to his own home and you will leave me alone. But I am not alone, because the Father is with me.	32 Ecco, viene l’ora, anzi è venuta, in cui vi disperderete, ciascuno per conto suo, e mi lascerete solo; ma io non sono solo, perché il Padre è con me.
33 I have told you this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world."	33 Queste cose vi ho detto affinché in me abbiate pace. Nel mondo avrete tribolazione, ma coraggio!, io ho vinto il mondo».
