DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
If I speak with the tongues of men, and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.1 If I speak in human and angelic tongues but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal.
And if I should have prophecy and should know all mysteries, and all knowledge, and if I should have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.2 And if I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing.
And if I should distribute all my goods to feed the poor, and if I should deliver my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.3 If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing.
Charity is patient, is kind: charity envieth not, dealeth not perversely; is not puffed up;4 Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, (love) is not pompous, it is not inflated,
Is not ambitious, seeketh not her own, is not provoked to anger, thinketh no evil;5 it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury,
Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth with the truth;6 it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth.
Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.7 It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Charity never falleth away: whether prophecies shall be made void, or tongues shall cease, or knowledge shall be destroyed.8 Love never fails. If there are prophecies, they will be brought to nothing; if tongues, they will cease; if knowledge, it will be brought to nothing.
For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.9 For we know partially and we prophesy partially,
But when that which is perfect is come, that which is in part shall be done away.10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.
When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child. But, when I became a man, I put away the things of a child.11 When I was a child, I used to talk as a child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I put aside childish things.
We see now through a glass in a dark manner; but then face to face. Now I know I part; but then I shall know even as I am known.12 At present we see indistinctly, as in a mirror, but then face to face. At present I know partially; then I shall know fully, as I am fully known.
And now there remain faith, hope, and charity, these three: but the greatest of these is charity.13 So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
