EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Palabras de Cohélet, hijo de David, rey en Jerusalén.	1 Composition of Qoheleth son of David, king in Jerusalem.
2 ¡Vanidad, pura vanidad!, dice Cohélet. ¡Vanidad, pura vanidad! ¡Nada más que vanidad!	2 Sheer futility, Qoheleth says. Sheer futility: everything is futile!
3 ¿Qué provecho saca el hombre de todo el esfuerzo que realiza bajo el sol?	3 What profit can we show for al our toil, toiling under the sun?
4 Una generación se va y la otra viene, y la tierra siempre permanece.	4 A generation goes, a generation comes, yet the earth stands firm for ever.
5 El sol sale y se pone, y se dirige afanosamente hacia el lugar de donde saldrá otra vez.	5 The sun rises, the sun sets; then to its place it speeds and there it rises.
6 El viento va hacia el sur y gira hacia el norte; va dando vueltas y vueltas, y retorna sobre su curso.	6 Southward goes the wind, then turns to the north; it turns and turns again; then back to its circling goesthe wind.
7 Todos los ríos van al mar y el mar nunca se llena; al mismo lugar donde van los ríos, allí vuelven a ir.	7 Into the sea go al the rivers, and yet the sea is never fil ed, and stil to their goal the rivers go.
8 Todas las personas están gastadas, más de lo que se puede expresar. ¿No se sacia el ojo de ver y el oído no se cansa de escuchar?	8 Al things are wearisome. No one can say that eyes have not had enough of seeing, ears their fil ofhearing.
9 Lo que fue, eso mismo será; lo que se hizo, eso mismo se hará: ¡no hay nada nuevo bajo el sol!	9 What was, wil be again, what has been done, wil be done again, and there is nothing new under thesun!
10 Si hay algo de lo que dicen: «Mira, esto sí que es algo nuevo». en realidad, eso mismo ya existió muchísimo antes que nosotros.	10 Take anything which people acclaim as being new: it existed in the centuries preceding us.
11 No queda el recuerdo de las cosas pasadas, ni quedará el recuerdo de las futuras en aquellos que vendrán después.	11 No memory remains of the past, and so it wil be for the centuries to come -- they will not beremembered by their successors.
12 Yo, Cohélet, he sido rey de Israel, en Jerusalén,	12 I, Qoheleth, have reigned over Israel in Jerusalem.
13 y me dediqué a investigar y a explorar con sabiduría todo lo que se hace bajo el cielo: es esta una ingrata tarea que Dios impuso a los hombres para que se ocupen de ella.	13 Wisely I have applied myself to investigation and exploration of everything that happens under heaven.What a wearisome task God has given humanity to keep us busy!
14 Así observé todas las obras que se hacen bajo el sol, y vi que todo es vanidad y correr tras el viento.	14 I have seen everything that is done under the sun: how futile it al is, mere chasing after the wind!
15 Lo torcido no se puede enderezar, ni se puede contar lo que falta.	15 What is twisted cannot be straightened, what is not there cannot be counted.
16 Entonces me dije a mí mismo: Yo acumulé una gran sabiduría, más que todos mis predecesores en Jerusalén, y mi corazón ha visto mucha sabiduría y ciencia.	16 I thought to myself: I have acquired a greater stock of wisdom than anyone before me in Jerusalem. Imyself have mastered every kind of wisdom and science.
17 Me dediqué a conocer la sabiduría, la ciencia, la locura y la necedad, y advertí que también eso es correr tras el viento.	17 I have applied myself to understanding philosophy and science, stupidity and fol y, and I now realisethat all this too is chasing after the wind.
18 Porque mucha sabiduría trae mucha aflicción, y el que acumula ciencia, acumula dolor.	18 Much wisdom, much grief; the more knowledge, the more sorrow.
