1 Los nombres de los israelitas que llegaron con Jacob a Egipto, cada uno con su familia, son los siguientes:	1 These are the names of the sons of Israel, who went into Egypt with Jacob. They entered, each one with his house:
2 Rubén, Simeón, Leví y Judá,	2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah,
3 Isacar, Zabulón y Benjamín,	3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,
4 Dan y Neftalí, Gad y Aser.	4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
5 Los descendientes de Jacob eran, en total, setenta personas, José ya estaba en Egipto.	5 Therefore, all the souls of those who went forth from Jacob’s thigh were seventy. Now Joseph was in Egypt.
6 Después murieron José y sus hermanos, y toda aquella generación.	6 When he had died, along with all of his brothers and all of that generation,
7 Pero los israelitas fueron fecundos y se multiplicaron, hasta convertirse en una muchedumbre numerosa y muy fuerte, que llenaba el país.	7 the sons of Israel increased, and they multiplied like seedlings. And having been strengthened exceedingly, they filled the land.
8 Mientras tanto, asumió el poder en Egipto un nuevo rey, que no había conocido a José.	8 Meanwhile, there arose a new king over Egypt, who was ignorant of Joseph.
9 El dijo a su pueblo: «El pueblo de los israelitas es más numeroso y fuerte que nosotros.	9 And he said to his people: “Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are many, and they are stronger than we are.
10 Es preciso tomar precauciones contra él, para impedir que siga multiplicándose. De lo contrario, en caso de guerra se pondrá de parte de nuestros enemigos, combatirá contra nosotros y se irá del país»	10 Come, let us wisely oppress them, lest they multiply; and if any war should advance against us, they may be added to our enemies, and having fought against us, they might depart from the land.”
11 Entonces los egipcios pusieron a Israel a las órdenes de capataces, para que lo oprimieran con trabajos forzados. Así Israel construyó para el Faraón las ciudades de almacenamiento de Pitom y Ramsés.	11 And so he set over them masters of the works, in order to afflict them with burdens. And they built for Pharaoh the cities of the tabernacles: Pithom and Raamses.
12 Pero a medida que aumentaba la opresión, más se multiplicaba y más se expandía. Esto hizo que la presencia de los israelitas se convirtiera en un motivo de inquietud.	12 And the more they oppressed them, so much more did they multiply and increase.
13 Por eso, los egipcios redujeron a los israelitas a la condición de los esclavos,	13 And the Egyptians hated the sons of Israel, and they afflicted them and mocked them.
14 y les hicieron insoportable la vida, forzándolos a realizar trabajos extenuantes: la preparación de la arcilla, la fabricación de ladrillos y toda clase de tareas agrícolas.	14 And they led their life directly into bitterness, with hard work in clay and brick, and with all kinds of servitude, so that they were being overwhelmed with the works of the land.
15 Además, el rey de Egipto se dirigió a las parteras de las mujeres hebreas –una de ellas se llamaba Sifrá y la otra Puá–	15 Then the king of Egypt spoke to the midwives of the Hebrews, (one of whom one was called Shiphrah, another Puah)
16 y les ordenó: «Cuando asistan durante el parto a las mujeres hebreas, observen bien el sexo del recién nacido: si es varón, mátenlo, y si es una niña, déjenla vivir».	16 instructing them: “When you will act as a midwife to the Hebrew women, and the time of delivery has arrived: if it is male, put it to death; if it is female, retain it.”
17 Pero las parteras tuvieron temor de Dios, y en lugar de acatar la orden que les había dado el rey de Egipto, dejaban con vida a los varones.	17 But the midwives feared God, and so they did not act according to the precept of the king of Egypt, but they kept the males safe.
18 El rey las mandó llamar y les preguntó: «Por qué han obrado así y han dejado con vida a los varones?».	18 And summoning them, the king said, “What did you intend to do, so that you would save the boys?”
19 Ellas le respondieron: «Por que las mujeres hebreas no son como las egipcias: tienen mucha vitalidad, y antes que llegue la partera, ya han dado a luz».	19 They responded: “The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women. For they themselves have the wisdom of a midwife, and so they give birth before we can come to them.”
20 Por eso Dios fue bondadoso con las parteras. El pueblo creció cada vez más y se hizo muy poderoso,	20 Therefore, God acted favorably toward the midwives. And the people increased, and they were strengthened exceedingly.
21 y como ellas habían obrado con temor de Dios, él les concedió una familia numerosa.	21 And because the midwives feared God, he built houses for them.
22 Entonces el Faraón dio esta orden a su pueblo: «Arrojen al Nilo a todos los varones recién nacidos, pero dejen con vida a las niñas».	22 Therefore, Pharaoh instructed all his people, saying: “Whatever will be born of the male sex, cast it into the river; whatever will be born of the female sex, retain it.”
