| 1 Procurai a caridade, aspirai aos dons espituais e, sobre todos, ao da profecia. | 1 Pursue charity. Be zealous for spiritual things, but only so that you may prophesy. |
| 2 A razão é que, o que fala uma língua (desconhecida), não fala aos homens, mas a Deus. Com efeito, ninguém o compreende: pelo espírito fala coisas misteriosas. | 2 For whoever speaks in tongues, speaks not to men, but to God. For no one understands. Yet by the Spirit, he speaks mysteries. |
| 3 Ao contrário, o que profetiza, fala aos homens para sua edificação, exortação e consolação. | 3 But whoever prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation. |
| 4 O que fala uma língua (desconhecida), edifica-se a si mesmo; o que profetiza, edifica a Igreja de Deus. | 4 Whoever speaks in tongues edifies himself. But whoever prophesies edifies the Church. |
| 5 Desejo que todos vós tenhais o dom das línguas; porém, muito mais que profetizeis. De facto, é maior o que profetiza, que o que fala diversas línguas, a não ser que também as interprete, a fim de que a Igreja receba edificação. | 5 Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but more so to prophesy. For he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks in tongues, unless perhaps he interprets, so that the Church may receive edification. |
| 6 Assim, pois. Irmãos, se eu for ter convosco falando em diversas línguas, de que vos aproveitarei, se vos não falar com a revelação, ou com a ciência, ou com a profecia, ou com a doutrina? | 6 But now, brothers, if I were to come to you speaking in tongues, how would it benefit you, unless instead I speak to you in revelation, or in knowledge, or in prophecy, or in doctrine? |
| 7 Do mesmo modo as coisas inanimadas, que dão som, como a flauta ou a citara, se não derem sons distintos, como se distinguirá o que se toca na flauta ou na citara? | 7 Even those things that are without a soul can make sounds, whether it is a wind or a stringed instrument. But unless they present a distinction within the sounds, how will it be known which is from the pipe and which is from the string? |
| 8 E, se a trombeta der um som confuso, quem se preparará para a batalha? | 8 For example, if the trumpet made an uncertain sound, who would prepare himself for battle? |
| 9 Assim também vós, se, falando uma língua, não proferirdes palavras claras, como se entenderá o que dizeis? Falareis ao vento. | 9 So it is with you also, for unless you utter with the tongue in plain speech, how will it be known what is said? For then you would be speaking into the air. |
| 10 Há, com efeito, muitos gêneros de línguas neste mundo, e todas têm a sua expressão. | 10 Consider that there are so many different kinds of languages in this world, and yet none is without a voice. |
| 11 Se eu, pois, não entender o que significam as palavras, serei bárbaro para aquele a quem falo; e o que fala será bárbaro para mim. | 11 Therefore, if I do not understand the nature of the voice, then I shall be like a foreigner to the one with whom I am speaking; and he who is speaking will be like a foreigner to me. |
| 12 Assim também vós, já que sois desejosos de dons espirituais, procurai abundar neles para edificação da Igreja. | 12 So it is with you also. And since you are zealous for what is spiritual, seek the edification of the Church, so that you may abound. |
| 13 Por isso, o que fala uma língua desconhecida, peça o dom de a interpretar. | 13 For this reason, too, whoever speaks in tongues, let him pray for the interpretation. |
| 14 Se eu orar numa língua (desconhecida, verdade é que) o meu espírito ora, mas o meu entendimento fica sem fruto. | 14 So, if I pray in tongues, my spirit prays, but my mind is without fruit. |
| 15 Que hei-de, pois, fazer? Orarei com o espírito, orarei também com a inteligência. Cantarei com o espírito, cantarei também com a inteligência. | 15 What is next? I should pray with the spirit, and also pray with the mind. I should sing psalms with the spirit, and also recite psalms with the mind. |
| 16 Mas, se deres graças com o espírito, o que ocupa o lugar do simples povo como responderá Amen à tua acção de graças, não entendendo o que dizes? | 16 Otherwise, if you have blessed only with the spirit, how can someone, in a state of ignorance, add an “Amen” to your blessing? For he does not know what you are saying. |
| 17 Verdade é que tu dás bem a acção de graças, mas o outro não é edificado. | 17 In this case, certainly, you give thanks well, but the other person is not edified. |
| 18 Dou graças ao meu Deus, porque falo em línguas mais que todos vós. | 18 I thank my God that I speak in tongues for all of you. |
| 19 Mas na Igreja eu antes quero dizer cinco palavras, de modo a ser compreendido para instruir também os outros, do que dez mil palavras em línguas. | 19 But in the Church, I prefer to speak five words from my mind, so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in tongues. |
| 20 Irmãos, não sejais crianças no julgar. Em malícia sede pequeninos, mas no julgar sede homens maduros. | 20 Brothers, do not choose to have the minds of children. Instead, be free of malice like infants, but be mature in your minds. |
| 21 Na lei está escrito: Por outras línguas e por outros lábios falarei a este povo, e nem ainda assim me ouvirão, diz o Senhor (Is. 28, 11-12). | 21 It is written in the law: “I will speak to this people with other tongues and other lips, and even so, they will not heed me, says the Lord.” |
| 22 As línguas, pois, são um sinal, não para os fiéis, mas para os infiéis; porém as profecias (são um sinal) não para os infiéis mas para os fiéis. | 22 And so, tongues are a sign, not for believers, but for unbelievers; and prophecies are not for unbelievers, but for believers. |
| 23 Se, pois, toda a Igreja se reunir em assembleia, e todos falarem línguas diversas, e entrarem então pessoas não iniciadas ou infiéis, não dirão que estais loucos ? | 23 If then, the entire Church were to gather together as one, and if all were to speak in tongues, and then ignorant or unbelieving persons were to enter, would they not say that you were insane? |
| 24 Porém, se todos profetizarem, e entrar um infiel ou um não iniciado, por todos é convencido, por todos é julgado ; | 24 But if everyone prophesies, and one who is ignorant or unbelieving enters, he may be convinced by it all, because he understands it all. |
| 25 as coisas ocultas do seu coração tornam-se manifestas e, assim, prostrado com a face por terra, adorará a Deus, declarando que Deus está verdadeiramente entre vós. | 25 The secrets of his heart are then made manifest. And so, falling to his face, he would adore God, proclaiming that God is truly among you. |
| 26 Que haveis, pois, de fazer, Irmãos ? Quando vos reunis, se um de vós tem um cântico, outro uma instrução, outro uma revelação, outro um discurso em línguas, outro uma interpretação, faça-se tudo de uma forma edificante. | 26 What is next, brothers? When you gather together, each one of you may have a psalm, or a doctrine, or a revelation, or a language, or an interpretation, but let everything be done for edification. |
| 27 Se alguém fala em línguas, falem dois, ou quando muito três, e um depois do outro, e haja um que interprete (o que eles disserem). | 27 If anyone is speaking in tongues, let there be only two, or at most three, and then in turn, and let someone interpret. |
| 28 Se não houver intérprete, estejam calados na Igreja, não falem senão consigo e com Deus. | 28 But if there is no one to interpret, he should remain silent in the church, then he may speak when he is alone with God. |
| 29 Pelo que toca, porém, aos profetas, falem dois ou três, e os outros julguem (o que ouvirem). | 29 And let the prophets speak, two or three, and let the others discern. |
| 30 Se (neste tempo) for feita qualquer revelação a algum dos assistentes, cale-se o que falava primeiro. | 30 But then, if something is revealed to another who is sitting, let the first one become silent. |

| 32 Os espíritos dos profetas estão sujeitos aos profetas. | 32 For the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. |
| 33 Porquanto Deus não é Deus de discórdia, mas de paz. Como (se faz) em todas as igrejas dos santos, | 33 And God is not of dissension, but of peace, just as I also teach in all the churches of the saints. |
| 34 as mulheres estejam caladas nas assembléias ; não lhes é permitido falar, mas devem estar sujeitas, como também o diz a lei. | 34 Women should be silent in the churches. For it is not permitted for them to speak; but instead, they should be subordinate, as the law also says. |
| 35 Se querem ser instruídas sobre algum ponto, interroguem em casa os seus maridos, porque é vergonhoso para uma mulher falar numa assembleia. | 35 And if they want to learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in church. |
| 36 Porventura é de vós que saiu a palavra de Deus ? Ou é só a vós que ela chegou ? | 36 So now, did the Word of God proceed from you? Or was it sent to you alone? |
| 37 Se algum crê ser profeta ou rico em dons espirituais, reconheça que as coisas que vos escrevo são mandamentos do Senhor. | 37 If anyone seems to be a prophet or a spiritual person, he should understand these things which I am writing to you, that these things are the commandments of the Lord. |
| 38 Se algum, porém, o ignora, é ignorado por Deus. | 38 If anyone does not recognize these things, he should not be recognized. |
| 39 Por isso, Irmãos, desejai ardentemente o dom de profetizar e não proibaís o falar em línguas. | 39 And so, brothers, be zealous to prophesy, and do not prohibit speaking in tongues. |
| 40 Mas faça-se tudo decentemente e com ordem. | 40 But let everything be done respectfully and according to proper order. |
