| 1 Agora, ó Israel, ouve os preceitos e as determinações que eu te ensino, para que, observando-os, vivas e entres na posse da terra que o Senhor Deus de vossos pais vos há-de dar. | 1 'And now, Israel, listen to the laws and customs which I am teaching you today, so that, by observingthem, you may survive to enter and take possession of the country which Yahweh, God of your ancestors, isgiving you. |
| 2 Não acrescentareis, nem tirareis nada à palavra que vos digo; guardai os mandamentos do Senhor vosso Deus, que eu vos intimo. | 2 You must add nothing to what I command you, and take nothing from it, but keep the commandmentsof Yahweh your God just as I lay them down for you. |
| 3 Os vossos olhos viram tudo o que o Senhor fez contra Beelfegor, como ele exterminou do meio de vós todos os seus adoradores. | 3 You can see for yourselves what Yahweh has done about the Baal of Peor; Yahweh your God hasdestroyed al those of you who fol owed the Baal of Peor; |
| 4 Mas vós, que estais unidos ao Senhor vosso Deus, estais todos vivos até hoje. | 4 but those of you who stayed faithful to Yahweh your God are all alive today. |
| 5 Sabeis que eu vos ensinei os preceitos e as determinações, conforme o Senhor meu Deus me mandou: assim os praticareis na terra que estais para possuir. | 5 Look: as Yahweh my God commanded me, I have taught you laws and customs, for you to observe inthe country of which you are going to take possession. |
| 6 Guardai-os, ponde-os em prática, porque neles está a vossa sabedoria e inteligência perante os povos, que, ouvindo todos estes preceitos, dirão: Eis um povo sábio e inteligente, uma nação grande. | 6 Keep them, put them into practice, and other peoples will admire your wisdom and prudence. Oncethey know what al these laws are, they wil exclaim, "No other people is as wise and prudent as this greatnation!" |
| 7 Não há outra nação tão grande, que tenha deuses tão próximos a si, como o nosso Deus, que está presente a todas as nossas preces. | 7 And indeed, what great nation has its gods as near as Yahweh our God is to us whenever we cal tohim? |
| 8 Onde há outro povo tão ilustre, que tenha cerimônias e ordenações justas, e toda esta lei que eu exporei hoje diante dos vossos olhos? | 8 And what great nation has laws and customs as upright as the entirety of this Law which I am layingdown for you today? |
| 9 Guarda-te, pois, a ti mesmo e a tua alma com solicitude. Não esqueças as coisas que teus olhos viram, e não se apaguem do teu coração durante todos os dias da tua vida. Tu as ensinarás a teus filhos e a teus netos, | 9 'But take care, as you value your lives! Do not forget the things which you yourselves have seen, or letthem slip from your heart as long as you live; teach them, rather, to your children and to your children's children. |
| 10 desde o dia em que te apresentaste diante do Senhor teu Deus, em Horeb, quando o Senhor me falou, dizendo: Ajunta-me o povo, para que ouçam as minhas palavras, e aprendam a temer-me durante o tempo que viverem na terra, e ensinem isso mesmo a seus filhos. | 10 The day you stood at Horeb in the presence of Yahweh your God, Yahweh said to me, "Summon thepeople to me; I want them to hear me speaking, so that they will learn to fear me al the days they live on earth,and teach this to their children." |
| 11 Vós aproximastes-vos das faldas do monte, que ardia até ao céu, e em que havia trevas, nuvens e escuridão. | 11 So you came and stood at the foot of the mountain, and the mountain flamed to the very sky, a skydarkened by cloud, murky and thunderous. |
| 12 E o Senhor falou-vos do meio do fogo. Vós ouvistes a Voz das suas palavras, mas não vistes figura alguma. | 12 Yahweh then spoke to you from the heart of the fire; you heard the sound of words but saw no shape;there was only a voice. |
| 13 Ele mostrou-vos o seu pacto, que ordenou que observásseis, e os dez mandamentos, que escreveu em duas tábuas de pedra. | 13 He revealed his covenant to you and commanded you to observe it, the Ten Words which he inscribedon two tablets of stone. |
| 14 Mandou-me naquele tempo que vos ensinasse as cerimónias e as leis, que vós deveis observar na terra, que estais para possuir. | 14 Yahweh then ordered me to teach you the laws and customs that you were to observe in the countryinto which you are about to cross, to take possession of it. |
| 15 Vós não vistes figura alguma no dia em que o Senhor vos falou sobre o Horeb do meio do fogo. | 15 'Hence, be very careful what you do. Since you saw no shape that day at Horeb when Yahweh spoketo you from the heart of the fire, |
| 16 Acautelai, pois, as vossas almas, não suceda que, enganados, façais para vós alguma imagem esculpida, quer seja figura de homem quer de mulher, | 16 see that you do not corrupt yourselves by making an image in the shape of anything whatever: be itstatue of man or of woman, |
| 17 ou representação de qualquer animal que há sobre a terra, ou das aves, que voam debaixo do céu, | 17 or of any animal on the earth, or of any bird that flies in the heavens, |
| 18 ou dos répteis que se movem sobre a terra, ou dos peixes que vivem nas águas, debaixo da terra; | 18 or of any reptile that crawls on the ground, or of any fish in the waters under the earth. |
| 19 não suceda que, levantando os olhos ao céu, e vendo o sol, a lua, e todas as estrelas do céu, caiais em erro, adorando e prestando culto a essas coisas que o Senhor teu Deus criou para servir a todas as gentes, que estão debaixo do céu. | 19 When you raise your eyes to heaven, when you see the sun, the moon, the stars -- the entire array ofheaven -- do not be tempted to worship them and serve them. Yahweh your God has al otted these to al theother peoples under heaven, |
| 20 O Senhor tomou-vos, e tirou-vos da fornalha férrea do Egipto, para serdes o povo da sua herança, como sois hoje. | 20 but Yahweh has chosen you, bringing you out of the iron-foundry, Egypt, to be his own people, hisown people as you stil are today. |
| 21 O Senhor irou-se contra mim, por causa dos vossos discursos, e jurou que eu não passaria do Jordão e que não entraria na terra excelente que está para vos dar. | 21 'Yahweh is angry with me because of you; he has sworn that I shall not cross the Jordan or enter thefine country which Yahweh your God is giving you as your heritage. |
| 22 Vou morrer neste país, não passarei o Jordão; passá-lo-eis vós, e possuireis essa bela terra. | 22 Yes, I am to die in this country; I shal not cross this Jordan; you wil go over and take possession ofthat rich land. |
| 23 Vê, não te esqueças jamais do pacto que o Senhor teu Deus fez contigo; não faças nenhuma representação esculpida daquelas coisas, que o Senhor proibiu fazer, | 23 Be careful not to forget the covenant which Yahweh your God has made with you, by sculpting animage or making a statue of anything, since Yahweh your God has forbidden this; |
| 24 porque o Senhor teu Deus é um fogo devorador, um Deus zeloso. | 24 for Yahweh your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. |
| 25 Se tiverdes filhos e netos, e, após longa permanência nessa terra, vos corromperdes e fizerdes para vós ídolos de qualquer espécie, cometendo o mal diante do Senhor vosso Deus, de modo que o provoqueis à ira, | 25 'When you have fathered children and grandchildren and have grown old in the country, when youhave grown corrupt and made some image, doing what Yahweh regards as wrong and so provoking his anger- |
| 26 — invoco hoje como testemunhas o céu e a terra, — certamente sereis bem cedo exterminados da terra, que, passado o Jordão, estais para possuir: não habitareis mais nela por muito tempo, mas o Senhor vos destruirá, | 26 today I cal heaven and earth to witness against you -- you wil quickly vanish from the country whichyou are crossing the Jordan to possess. Your days will not be prolonged there, for you wil be utterly destroyed. |
| 27 vos espalhará entre todos os povos, e ficareis poucos entre as nações, a que o Senhor vos conduzir. | 27 Yahweh wil scatter you among the peoples, and only a smal number of you wil remain among thenations where Yahweh wil have driven you. |
| 28 Lá servireis a deuses, que foram fabricados por mão dos homens, de pau e de pedra, os quais não vêem, nem ouvem, nem comem, nem sentem. | 28 There you wil serve gods made by human hand, of wood and of stone, that cannot see or hear, eat orsmel . |
| 29 Quando lá procurares o Senhor teu Deus, encontrá-lo-ás, contanto que o busques de todo o teu coração e com toda a contrição da tua alma. | 29 'If, however, from there you start searching once more for Yahweh your God, and if you search for himhonestly and sincerely, you will find him. |
| 30 Depois que tiverem acontecido todas as coisas que foram preditas, voltar-te-ás nos últimos tempos para o Senhor teu Deus, e ouvirás a sua voz, | 30 You wil suffer; everything I have said wil befal you, but in the final days you wil return to Yahwehyour God and listen to his voice. |
| 31 porque o Senhor teu Deus, é um Deus misericordioso: não te abandonará nem te extinguirá inteiramente, nem se esquecerá do pacto que jurou a teus pais. | 31 For Yahweh your God is a merciful God and wil not desert or destroy you or forget the covenantwhich he made on oath with your ancestors. |
| 32 Interroga os tempos antigos que te precederam, desde o dia em que Deus criou o homem sobre a terra, e desde uma extremidade do céu até à outra, se aconteceu jamais coisa semelhante, se se ouviu dizer | 32 'Put this question, then, to the ages that are past, that have gone before you, from when God createdthe human race on earth: Was there ever a word so majestic, from one end of heaven to the other? Wasanything like it ever heard? |
| 33 que um povo escutasse a voz de Deus, que lhe falava do meio do fogo, como tu escutaste, sem perder a vida; | 33 Did ever a people hear the voice of the living God speaking from the heart of the fire, as you haveheard it, and remain alive? |
| 34 que Deus viesse tomar para si um povo entre as nações, por meio de provas, sinais e portentos, por meio de batalhas, com mão poderosa e braço estendido, por meio de coisas espantosas, como fez o Senhor vosso Deus no Egipto diante dos teus olhos, | 34 Has it ever been known before that any god took action himself to bring one nation out of another one,by ordeals, signs, wonders, war with mighty hand and outstretched arm, by fearsome terrors -- al of which thingsYahweh your God has done for you before your eyes in Egypt? |
| 35 para que soubesses que o Senhor é (o verdadeiro) Deus, e que não há outro fora dele. | 35 'This he showed you, so that you might know that Yahweh is the true God and that there is no other. |
| 36 Fez-te ouvir a sua voz do céu para te instruir, e sobre a terra te mostrou o seu fogo grandíssimo, e tu ouviste as suas palavras do meio do fogo. | 36 To instruct you, he made you hear his voice from heaven, and on earth he let you see his great fire,and from the heart of the fire you heard his words. |
| 37 Visto que amou teus pais, escolheu a sua posteridade depois deles, e tirou-te do Egipto, caminhando diante de ti com o seu grande poder, | 37 Because he loved your ancestors and, after them, chose their descendants, he has brought you out ofEgypt, displaying his presence and mighty power, |
| 38 para exterminar à tua chegada nações maiores e mais fortes do que tu, e para te introduzir nas suas terras e dar-tas como herança, segundo tu estás hoje a ver. | 38 dispossessing for you nations who were larger and stronger than you, to make way for you and to giveyou their country as your heritage, as it still is today. |
| 39 Reconhece, pois, neste dia, considera no teu coração que o Senhor é o único (verdadeiro) Deus desde o alto do céu até ao mais profundo da terra, e não há outro. | 39 'Hence, grasp this today and meditate on it careful y: Yahweh is the true God, in heaven above as onearth beneath, he and no other. |
| 40 Guarda os seus preceitos e os seus mandamentos, que eu te prescrevo, para que te suceda bem a ti, e aos teus filhos depois de ti, e permaneças por Iongo tempo na terra, que o Senhor teu Deus está para te dar. | 40 Keep his laws and commandments as I give them to you today, so that you and your children afteryou may prosper and live long in the country that Yahweh your God is giving you for ever.' |
| 41 Então Moisés separou três cidades na banda oriental do Jordão, | 41 Moses then set aside three towns in the east, beyond the Jordan, |
| 42 a fim de que se refugie a elas aquele que sem querer tiver morto o seu próximo, sem ser seu inimigo, e possa salvar a sua vida, acolhendo-se a uma destas cidades: | 42 to which any kil er might flee who had accidental y, without any previous feud, killed his fel ow; by taking refuge in one of these towns he could save his life. |
| 43 Bolsor, no deserto, situada na planície da tribo de Ruben; Ramoth, em Galaad, que está na tribo de Gad; e Golan, em Basan, que está na tribo de Manassés. | 43 These were, for the Reubenites, Bezer in the desert on the tableland; for the Gadites, Ramoth inGilead; for the Manassehites, Golan in Bashan. |

| 46 estando da banda daquém do Jordão, no vale (que fica) defronte do templo de Fogor, na terra de Seon, rei dos Amorreus, que habitou em Hesebon, a quem Moisés derrotou. | 49 com toda a planície do lado oriental do Jordão, até ao mar do deserto, e até às faldas do monte Fasga. | 49 and of the whole Arabah east of the Jordan as far as the Sea of the Arabah, at the foot of the slopesof Pisgah. |
