| 1 Ama, pois, o Senhor teu Deus, e guarda em todo o tempo os seus preceitos, as suas leis, as suas ordenações, os seus mandamentos. | 1 'You must love Yahweh your God and always keep his observances, his laws, his customs, hiscommandments. |
| 2 Reconhecei hoje o que ignoram os vossos filhos, os quais não viram os castigos do Senhor vosso Deus, as suas maravilhas, a sua mão poderosa e o seu braço estendido, | 2 You are the ones who have had the experience, not your children. They have not had the experience,they have not witnessed the lessons of Yahweh your God, his greatness, his mighty hand and his outstretchedarm, |
| 3 os prodígios e as obras que fez no meio do Egipto sobre o rei Faraó, sobre todo o seu país, | 3 the signs and the deeds which he performed in the heart of Egypt, against Pharaoh king of Egypt andhis entire country, |
| 4 sobre todo o exército dos Egípcios, sobre os cavalos e carros, lançando sobre eles as águas do mar Vermelho, quando vos perseguiam e destruindo-os até ao dia de hoje; | 4 what he did to the armies of Egypt, to their horses and their chariots, by overwhelming them with thewaters of the Sea of Reeds when they were pursuing you, and leaving no trace of them to this day; |
| 5 (reconhecei) o que fez no deserto, até que chegásseis a este lugar, | 5 what he did for you in the desert, until you arrived here; |
| 6 e (o que fez) a Datan e a Abiron, filhos de Eliab, que foi filho de Ruben, quando a terra, abrindo a sua boca, os engoliu com as suas casas, tendas e tudo o que possuíam no meio de Israel. | 6 what he did to Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab the Reubenite, when, with al Israel standinground, the earth opened its mouth and swal owed them, with their families, their tents and al their supporters. |
| 7 Os vossos olhos viram todas as grandes obras que o Senhor fez. | 7 Al these great deeds of Yahweh you have seen with your own eyes. |
| 8 Observai, pois, todos os seus mandamentos, que hoje vos prescrevo, para que sejais fortes e possais entrar e possuir a terra, para a qual caminhais, | 8 'You must keep al the commandments which I enjoin on you today, so that you may have the strengthto conquer the country into which you are about to cross, to take possession of it, |
| 9 e vivais por muito tempo nessa terra que o Senhor prometeu com juramento a vossos pais e à sua posteridade, terra que mana leite e mel. | 9 and so that you may live long in the country which Yahweh promised on oath to bestow on yourancestors and their descendants, a country flowing with milk and honey. |
| 10 A terra em que vais entrar para a possuir, não é como a terra do Egipto, donde saíste, na qual, lançada a semente, se conduzem as águas para regar, como se faz nas hortas, | 10 'For the country which you are about to enter and make your own is not like the country of Egyptfrom which you have come, where, having done your sowing, you had to water the seed by foot, as though in avegetable garden. |
| 11 mas é uma terra de montes e de planícies, regada com as chuvas do céu, | 11 No, the country which you are about to enter and make your own, is a country of hills and val eyswatered by the rain of heaven. |
| 12 uma terra de que o Senhor teu Deus toma cuidado, e sobre que seus olhos estão desde o princípio do ano até ao fim. | 12 Yahweh your God looks after this country, the eyes of Yahweh your God are always on it, from thebeginning of the year to the end. |
| 13 Se vós, portanto, obedecerdes aos meus mandamentos, que eu hoje vos prescrevo, de amar o Senhor vosso Deus, de o servir de todo o vosso coração e de toda a vossa alma, | 13 Depend on it: if you faithfully obey the commandments I enjoin on you today, loving Yahweh yourGod and serving him with al your heart and al your soul, |
| 14 ele dará à vossa terra as chuvas temporãs e serôdias, para que recolhais pão, vinho, azeite, | 14 I shal give your country rain at the right time, rain in autumn, rain in spring, so that you can harvestyour wheat, your new wine and your oil. |
| 15 e feno dos campos para sustentar os gados, de maneira que tenhais que comer e com que vos saciar. | 15 I shal provide grass in the fields for your cattle, and you will eat to your heart's content. |
| 16 Tende cuidado que o vosso coração não seja seduzido, que não vos aparteis do Senhor e sirvais a deuses estranhos, e os adoreis, | 16 Beware of letting your heart be seduced: if you go astray, serve other gods and bow down to them, |
| 17 porque o Senhor irado fecharia o céu, não cairiam chuvas, nem a terra daria os seus frutos, e vós dentro de pouco tempo serieis exterminados da excelente terra que o Senhor está para vos dar. | 17 Yahweh's anger wil be kindled against you, he wil shut the heavens, there wil be no more rain, thesoil wil not yield its produce and, in the fine country given you by Yahweh, you wil quickly perish. |
| 18 Ponde nos vossos corações e nas vossas almas estas minhas palavras, prendei-as às vossas mãos como um sinal, colocai-as como frontal entre os vossos olhos. | 18 'Let these words of mine remain in your heart and in your soul; fasten them on your hand as a signand on your forehead as a headband. |
| 19 Ensinai vossos filhos a meditá-las, quer em casa, quer em viagem, quer ao deitar ou ao levantar. | 19 Teach them to your children, and keep on tel ing them, when you are sitting at home, when you areout and about, when you are lying down and when you are standing up. |
| 20 Escreve-las-ás sobre os postes e as portas de tua casa, | 20 Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, |
| 21 para que os teus dias e os teus filhos, na terra, que o Senhor jurou a teus pais dar-lhes, sejam tão numerosos como os dias dos céus sobre a terra. | 21 so that you and your children may live long in the country which Yahweh swore to your ancestorsthat he would give them for as long as there is a sky above the earth. |
| 22 Com efeito, se vós observardes e puserdes em prática os mandamentos que eu vos prescrevo, de amar o Senhor vosso Deus e de andar em todos os seus caminhos, estando unidos a ele, | 22 'For if you faithful y keep and observe al these commandments that I enjoin on you today, lovingYahweh your God, following all his ways and holding fast to him, |
| 23 o Senhor destruirá à vossa vista todas estas gentes, e vós as possuireis, embora elas sejam maiores e mais poderosas do que vós. | 23 Yahweh wil dispossess al these nations before you, and you wil dispossess nations greater andmore powerful than yourselves. |
| 24 Todo o lugar em que vós puserdes o vosso pé, será vosso. Os vossos limites serão desde o deserto ao Líbano, desde o grande rio Eufrates até ao mar ocidental. | 24 Wherever the sole of your foot treads wil be yours; your territory will run from the desert al the wayto the Lebanon; and from the River, from the River Euphrates, as far as the Western Sea, wil be your territory. |
| 25 Nenhum poderá prevalecer contra vós: o Senhor vosso Deus espalhará o terror e o espanto de vós sobre toda a teria que haveis de pisar, como ele vo-lo disse. | 25 No one wil be able to resist you; Yahweh your God will make you feared and dreaded throughout theterritory you tread, as he has promised you. |
| 26 Vêde que eu ponho hoje diante dos vossos olhos a bênção e a maldição; | 26 'Today, look, I am offering you a blessing and a curse: |
| 27 a bênção, se obedecerdes aos mandamentos do Senhor vosso Deus, que eu hoje vos prescrevo: | 27 a blessing, if you obey the commandments of Yahweh your God which I enjoin on you today; |
| 28 a maldição, se não obedecerdes aos mandamentos do Senhor vosso Deus, mas vos apartardes do caminho, que eu hoje vos mostro, e fordes após os deuses estranhos, que não conheceis. | 28 a curse, if you disobey the commandments of Yahweh your God and leave the way which today Ihave marked out for you, by following other gods hitherto unknown to you. |
| 29 Quando, porém, o Senhor teu Deus te tiver introduzido na terra que vais habitar, porás a bênção sobre o Garizim e monte Garizim, e a maldição sobre o monte Hebal, | 29 And when Yahweh your God has brought you into the country which you are about to enter andmake your own, you must set the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal. |
| 30 os quais estão na banda dalém do Jordão, junto ao caminho que desce para o ocidente, na terra dos Cananeus, que habitam nas campinas defronte de Galgala, junto das cadeias de Moré. | 30 (These mountains, as everyone knows, are on the other side of the Jordan on the westward road, inthe territory of the Canaanites who live in the Arabah, opposite Gilgal, near the Oak of Moreh.) |
| 31 Com efeito, vós passareis o Jordão para possuirdes a terra que o Senhor vosso Deus vos há-de dar, para a possuirdes e habitardes. | 31 For you are about to cross the Jordan, to enter and take possession of the country given you byYahweh your God. You wil possess it, you wil live in it, |
| 32 Tende, pois, cuidado em observar as leis e ordenações, que eu hoje ponho diante de vós. | 32 and you must keep and observe al the laws and customs promulgated by me to you today.' |
